Chiefs at Seahawks: the board is dressed for the highlight reel
A walk through the whole Sunday night board, the unders I will take at the posted price and the numbers I will not touch.
Up 5.6 units going into this board.
Kansas City Chiefs at Seattle Seahawks under the lights, and the board is dressed for a party. The total sits at 42.5, yet the prop lines read like somebody expects a shootout. I do not. Everybody loves yards. I do not. Give me a tired passing game and a number that is a little too high.
Start with the quarterbacks. Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs quarterback, is posted at 218.5 passing yards, and that is a fair number for a name this big, so I leave him alone. Sam Darnold, the Seahawks quarterback, is posted at 223.5 and that is the one I think is shaded, because the line is built on his best night and not his usual one.
Receivers and tight ends are where the highlight reel shows. Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the Seahawks wide receiver, carries a 92.5 receiving yards line that I will not chase. Cooper Kupp, a Seahawks wide receiver, sits at 24.5 receiving yards and looks fair to me. Travis Kelce, the Chiefs tight end, is posted at 4.5 receptions, and the board is paying for the name. Noah Gray, a Chiefs tight end, sits at 15.5 receiving yards with a median of 9.5 over his last ten, and I call that fair and pass.
Backs are a mixed bag. Kenneth Walker III, the Chiefs running back, and Emanuel Wilson, the Seahawks running back, both carry numbers that need a closer look, and you will find them below. Touchdown scorers I skip entirely. Nothing there pays me enough for a number the board built for the cameras.
Sam Darnold under 223.5 passing yards
Sam Darnold is posted at 223.5 passing yards, and I can take the under at -113 at DraftKings. The under has hit in seven of his last ten, and his median over those ten is 196.5. His last five, newest first, read 278, 195, 168, 379 and 13, and that 13 came in Week 1, when he left after five snaps with an injury. That 379 is the outlier, and the line looks built on it. The Seahawks are 3-3, and Darnold threw multiple interceptions in the loss at Denver. The Chiefs are 5-0 with a defense that gave up six points to the Chargers. A quarterback who has been turning the ball over against a defense like that does not get a long afternoon of yards, and a Seattle drive that dies early does not pad a total.
What beats it: A Kansas City lead that forces Seattle to throw on every down would push his yards past the line, and one more big night like the 379 would do it alone. A turnover on a short field also gives Seattle extra drives and extra dropbacks.
Travis Kelce under 4.5 receptions
Travis Kelce is posted at 4.5 receptions, and the under is -151 at DraftKings. That is a steep price and I will pay it. His last five, newest first, read 4, 2, 2, 9 and 3, so one game in five cleared the line by a mile and the rest sat under it. The under has hit in seven of his last ten and his median over those ten is 3. The board is paying for a famous name in a primetime window. The total is only 42.5, which does not describe a game that hands out a pile of catches and I do not see a script that makes him the volume.
What beats it: A game script with Kansas City trailing and throwing short targets underneath would feed him volume, and another nine-catch game like the one in his recent run would clear the number with room to spare.
AJ Barner under 24.5 receiving yards
AJ Barner, the Seahawks tight end, is posted at 24.5 receiving yards, and the under is -112 at DraftKings. His last five, newest first, read 16, 20, 12, 69 and 8, so he has cleared this number once in that stretch. The under has hit in eight of his last ten and his median over those ten is 13.5. Seattle comes in with a quarterback who has been turning the ball over, and a tight end on that offense is not the first read. A line this low still sits above eight of his last ten.
What beats it: A single big play can wipe out the under on this number, and the 69-yard game in his run shows it can happen. A Seattle red zone drive built around the tight end would also cover the line in two catches.
Jalen Royals under 2.5 receptions
Jalen Royals, a Chiefs wide receiver, is posted at 2.5 receptions, and the under is -162 at DraftKings. That is the heaviest price on my board and I take it anyway. His last five, newest first, read 2, 0, 1, 2 and 0, and the under has hit in all ten of his last ten, with a median of 0. Four of those ten were games on the field where he never got a touch. The board has a number that asks him to catch three, and he has not done it once in the run I can see. Kansas City allowed the Chargers only six, and that does not invite a shootout either.
What beats it: Rashee Rice is already ruled out, and Royals played 45 snaps and drew four targets in his last game. If another Chiefs receiver goes down, the targets spread further and Royals could see a bigger share, which is how three catches arrive.
Xavier Worthy under 4.5 receptions
Xavier Worthy, a Chiefs wide receiver, is posted at 4.5 receptions, and the under is -111 at BetMGM. His last five, newest first, read 7, 4, 2, 5 and 3, so two of those five cleared the line and three did not. The under has hit in eight of his last ten and his median over those ten is 3. He is a player the highlight reel loves because of what he can do with one touch, not because of how many touches he gets. With a total of 42.5 and Kansas City stingy enough to hold the Chargers to six, I would rather bet against volume than for it.
What beats it: A game where Mahomes keeps going short to him would turn a deep threat into a volume receiver, and that is how he gets to five. A game where Kansas City has to chase points would also lift his target count past the number.
Staying away
Jaxon Smith-Njigba over 92.5 receiving yards: Jaxon Smith-Njigba has been very good, with 134, 102, 76, 128 and 155 in his last five, newest first, and the over has hit in four of five. That is exactly why the number is 92.5 now. The line has caught up to the run and I do not pay a premium for a narrative the whole country already knows.
Patrick Mahomes over 218.5 passing yards: Patrick Mahomes has gone 272, 225, 246, 382 and 184 over his last five, newest first. That is a wide range, and the 382 is doing a lot of work. The line is 218.5 and the over has hit in four of five, but his newest game, 272, cleared it and only the oldest of the five, 184, fell short, and I have no price on either side worth touching.
Kenneth Walker III over 3.5 receptions: Kenneth Walker III has caught 2, 1, 2, 6 and 3 in his last five, newest first, and the line is 3.5. The under has hit in four of five, so the over is a story and not a habit. The under carries no price worth taking, so I stay out.
Emanuel Wilson over 51.5 rushing yards: Emanuel Wilson ran for 52, 61, 81, 14 and 92 in his last five, newest first, and the over at 51.5 has hit in four of five. The median over his last ten is 48, which sits below the line. A back with that wide a range is not a bet I want in a low-total game.
Cooper Kupp over 24.5 receiving yards: Cooper Kupp has gone 50, 15, 13, 46 and 20 in his last five, newest first, and the line is 24.5. The over has hit in seven of his last ten, yet three of the last five sit at 20 or lower. The history says over and the recent games say under, so I want no part of it.
That is the board. I take the unders where the last games back me, I pay the steep prices where I have to, and I leave the loud names alone. I will not pretend the Mahomes name does not matter. Over the long run these numbers have been set for the cameras, and I would rather be the one standing there with a quiet ticket.
Prices as captured Sunday, Oct 25 at 4:08 AM ET. Adults 21 and over only. This is research and entertainment, not a recommendation to bet.
