The Lab Panthers at Packers: the unders hiding behind the highlight numbers
Panthers at Packers: the unders hiding behind the highlight numbers
A Thursday board shaded for the highlight reel, and four unders I will put my name on at the prices below.
Up 4.6 units going into this board, and the bear is not celebrating.
Everybody likes the points on a Thursday night. I do not. The Carolina Panthers visit the Green Bay Packers, the market has Green Bay laid 3.5 at home with the total at 47, and the prop board is dressed the way a primetime board always is, with the big numbers sitting right where a highlight reel wants them.
Start with the quarterbacks. Jordan Love, the Packers quarterback, is posted at 259.5 passing yards and has gone over in seven of his last ten, with a median of 276. Bryce Young, the Panthers quarterback, is at 252.5, over in seven of his last ten with a median of 273.5. Those are fair numbers. The books have watched these two clear them in most weeks, so there is nothing shaded to find, and I leave the passing yards alone. The rushing line on Young is another matter, and I get to it below.
The backs are where I find the bite. Josh Jacobs, the Packers back, is at 59.5 rushing yards, and Chuba Hubbard, the Panthers back, is at 14.5 receiving yards, a number his recent games do not support. Hubbard’s anytime touchdown is priced at -115 at FanDuel and Jacobs at -150 at BetMGM. I will not lay that kind of price on a touchdown in a game with a total of 47. MarShawn Lloyd, the Packers back, has a rushing line of 17.5 and a median of 20 over his recent games, which is about where it belongs.
Receivers and tight ends are priced for the name on the jersey. John Metchie III, the Panthers wide receiver, is at 14.5 receiving yards, over in eight of his last ten with a median of 22, and I would not call that shaded, only honest. Darren Waller, the Panthers tight end, is at 19.5 receiving yards and has cleared it in seven of his last ten. Tommy Tremble, the Panthers tight end, has a reception line of 2.5 with the over paying +135 at BetMGM, which is a number written for people who want to see a name in a highlight. I take the unders where the last games back me and I say so. Four of them follow, then the ones I would not touch.
Bryce Young under 9.5 rushing yards
Bryce Young, the Panthers quarterback, is posted at under 9.5 rushing yards at -111 at BetMGM. He has not reached the line once in his last five, running for 9, 6, 3, 0 and 6, and his median over the last ten is 7.5. Those are the numbers of a passer who throws first and runs only when he has to. The market has the Packers laid 3.5 at home in a game with a total of 47, which is not a scoreboard that sends a quarterback scrambling for yards.
What beats it: A game where Young has to scramble for first downs on broken plays would clear the line on one or two long runs, since he went over in four of his last ten. A Carolina deficit that forces drop after drop against pressure is the script that gets him there.
Chuba Hubbard under 14.5 receiving yards
Chuba Hubbard, the Panthers running back, is posted at under 14.5 receiving yards at -108 at DraftKings. His last five went 27, 1, 7, 28 and 11, so two games carried him over and the rest sat at or below 11. Over his last ten he stayed under seven times, and his median is 9. A running back’s receiving line is a number that two stray checkdown games can distort, and the median says those games are the exception for him.
What beats it: Carolina trailing and throwing short to the back would push him past the line quickly, since a single catch and run can cover most of it. His 27 and his 28 are both inside the last five, and a game that looks like either one beats this.
Josh Jacobs under 59.5 rushing yards
Josh Jacobs, the Packers running back, is posted at under 59.5 rushing yards at -110 at DraftKings. He went 36, 55, 3, 36 and 73 in his last five and stayed under this number in four of them. Only the newest game, the 36, came this season. Green Bay’s offensive line is missing guard Rhyan and tackle Glover, both listed out, which is a plain problem for a back who needs a lane. I will take the number as it sits.
What beats it: A Packers lead that lets Jacobs grind out the fourth quarter beats this, and his median over the last ten games is 64, above the 59.5 line. The ten games split five and five, so the under has no long run of history behind it.
Jalen Coker under 62.5 receiving yards
Jalen Coker, the Panthers wide receiver, is posted at under 62.5 receiving yards at -110 at DraftKings. His last five went 9, 97, 18, 66 and 138, so his production comes in spikes rather than every week. His median over the last ten is 53.5, below the line, and he stayed under in six of the ten. The skeptic’s read is simple: the average is padded by a couple of big nights and the middle is not.
What beats it: Pressure that never arrives would beat this, because Packers defensive linemen Campbell, Cox and Wyatt are all listed questionable and a thin front gives Young time to find Coker. A repeat of the 138, or even the 97, is all it takes. He went over in three of his last five.
Staying away
Jordan Love over 259.5 passing yards: Jordan Love, the Packers quarterback, went 274, 276, 367, 197 and 312 in his last five, over this number in four of them. That is exactly why I will not touch the over: the line already knows his good weeks, and a 197 sits in the same five.
Bryce Young under 252.5 passing yards: Bryce Young, the Panthers quarterback, threw for 163 last time out, and that is the game that makes the under look easy. I am not biting. The four before it were 281, 329, 291 and 287, all over this number, and one short night does not undo four big ones.
Christian Watson anytime touchdown: Christian Watson, the Packers wide receiver, has scored in six of his last ten, but inside his last five there is one two-touchdown night, one single score and three blanks. Plus money for a touchdown in a game with a total of 47 pays for the narrative, and I will leave it for someone who needs a story.
Tetairoa McMillan over 5.5 receptions: Tetairoa McMillan, the Panthers wide receiver, caught 4, 6, 14, 2 and 5 in his last five. The 14 stretches the picture, and without it only the 6 cleared 5.5. He has gone over in only three of his last ten, and the over pays plus money at some books, which is bait.
Tucker Kraft over 46.5 receiving yards: Tucker Kraft, the Packers tight end, went 48, 37, 64, 42 and 26 in his last five, over this number twice, and his median over the last ten is 45. A median under the line, two overs in five and a number that a single catch can swing gives me no side to like.
I would rather be a little bored than be on the highlight reel. The four unders above are where I stand, and I stand there only at those prices.
Prices as captured Thursday, Oct 29 at 4:09 AM ET. Adults 21 and over only. This is research and entertainment, not a recommendation to bet.
