Spread.Take Atlanta +3.5, listed at -108 in DraftKings’ September 9 snapshot. Our -4.3 Pittsburgh number disagrees, but its 0.8-point advantage is smaller than its demonstrated forecasting limitations. The market has already moved through three: the dossier records -3 to -3.5, while FanDuel’s longer history starts at -2.5. Rodgers’ reunion with McCarthy and Atlanta’s quarterback transition are public information, not fresh reasons to chase Pittsburgh. Wednesday’s reports leave Atlanta’s principal offensive weapons unlisted, and Porter’s limited participation introduces some uncertainty into Pittsburgh’s coverage. My inference is that Atlanta has enough offensive options to keep a field-goal loss live. The strongest counterargument is Pittsburgh’s cleaner practice report against Atlanta’s limited defensive linemen and rookie defensive starters. DraftKings’ Pittsburgh-heavy handle supports that concern but cannot establish informed action. I prefer the hook at this price; this is a small position, with no claim that the market has substantially mispriced either team.
Total.Take over 41.5 at FanDuel (-115). Applying the specified bias correction produces 42.71, only 1.21 points above this price; that supports a modest lean. The additional case is personnel: Atlanta’s main weapons are absent from Wednesday’s injury report, Pittsburgh’s offensive players are unlisted, and defensive practice limitations could help scoring. McCarthy and Rodgers’ familiarity also offers a plausible path to early offensive competence. The under deserves respect: both teams have new systems, Atlanta has quarterback disruption, and a run-heavy approach could reduce possessions. I could not verify a current quantitative pace projection. DraftKings reports heavy under money, but total movement differs across books and its 42.5 is a different proposition. The preliminary light-wind forecast supplies little reason for a weather downgrade. The available 41.5, rather than a sweeping offensive forecast, decides this lean.
Where our number looks wrong. The -4.3 estimate looks too precise and slightly too favorable to Pittsburgh to justify laying the hook. Its historical ATS performance does not validate that disagreement. Tua’s confirmation is already represented by the projected-QB flag and should not trigger another automatic downgrade. The model also cannot distinguish current practice limitations from actual absences. For totals, subtracting the prescribed 1.2-point bias changes 43.91 to 42.71, substantially reducing the apparent over edge.

Spread. Our number (PIT -4.3) sits a shade past the market's -3.5, and for once the news points the same way. Atlanta arrives without its starting QB (Penix, knee/ACL, inactive) and without its best young edge rusher (Pearce, eight-game suspension), starting a QB who threw 20 TD to 15 INT in 2025 and went 3-of-5 for 22 yards with a fumbled snap in his Falcons debut behind a line that leaked pressure all preseason. Pittsburgh's Wednesday report is nearly blank: one limited player. That is a real matchup edge for Watt and Highsmith at home in an opener. Both teams have brand-new head coaches, so neither gets a continuity edge. A lean, not a hammer.
Total.Take the highest number on the board, 42.5 at DraftKings. The case for under is personnel: Atlanta's backup-turned-starter behind a line that leaked pressure all preseason, missing its top receiver-in-waiting to a hamstring, running Stefanski's run-first scheme with Bijan Robinson chewing clock, against Watt and Highsmith at home. Pittsburgh is also installing a brand-new McCarthy offense in Week 1 with a 42-year-old QB. Weather is neutral, not a help - low 80s, mostly cloudy, no rain, so I am not counting wind. Modest lean.
Where our number looks wrong. The v3 rating is preseason-frozen at 8/19 and carries zero injury rows, so it is blind to the two facts that actually move this game - Penix out and Pearce suspended - and it arrives at PIT -4.3 for the wrong reasons. It also credits Pittsburgh a 2025 defensive EPA of +0.019 (worse than Atlanta's -0.002) while rating the Steelers nearly two points better overall; that gap is being carried by record and roster reputation, not by the underlying 2025 play. I am on this side because of the injury and personnel news, not because the number said -4.3.

Spread. The case for Pittsburgh is situational, not modeled. Atlanta is starting Tua Tagovailoa; Michael Penix Jr. was a full practice participant but is inactive Sunday as he continues ACL rehab (Steelers Depot / NBC Sports, 9/9/26), a QB plugged into a new offense with limited camp continuity behind him. Atlanta's pass rush is gutted: Jalon Walker (season-ending ACL, early Aug) and James Pearce Jr. (8-game suspension) are both out, against a shuffled but otherwise fine Steelers front. Pittsburgh is essentially fully healthy (only Porter Jr. limited, back) with Rodgers, Metcalf and Pittman all confirmed available. Reported market money, not just bet counts, sits at 72% on PIT -3.5 (ScoresAndOdds consensus, 9/8-9/26), consistent with this injury picture. Take Pittsburgh.
Total. Our totals model runs hot at 43.91 vs a 42-42.5 market, but its own 2022-2025 holdout shows it overshoots closing totals by about 1.2 points on average, pulling its true read to roughly par with the market rather than a genuine lean over. Reported betting splits show the under getting 65% of money and 67% of bets at 42.5 (ScoresAndOdds consensus, 9/8-9/26), consistent with two new coaching staffs (Mike McCarthy in Pittsburgh, Kevin Stefanski in Atlanta) installing new systems in Week 1 and a starting QB (Tua) with limited reps in this offense, openers under new regimes tend to run conservative. Cutting against that, Atlanta's pass rush is short-handed (Walker and Pearce both out), which could let Pittsburgh's offense sustain drives longer than the injury-blind model or the public assumes. Forecast is mild and dry (NWS, fetched 9/9/26: mostly cloudy, high near 83F, outdoors on grass), not a suppressant either way. On balance, lean under.
Where our number looks wrong. Its own gap reading calls this a pass, by the model's calibration there is no priced edge at all here, and historically it has had none anywhere (47.6% ATS on holdout). Our lean comes entirely from Atlanta's decimated edge rush (Walker and Pearce both out) and Tua's lack of camp reps in this offense, factors the frozen preseason rating and the empty injuries table cannot see.
The call, written up
Atlanta opens with Tua Tagovailoa in his first start in a new offense, Michael Penix Jr. inactive, and both young edge rushers unavailable (Jalon Walker on IR, James Pearce Jr. suspended eight games), against Aaron Rodgers in year two with Mike McCarthy and a Pittsburgh side whose only injury-report name is Joey Porter Jr., limited. The line moved from -3 to -3.5 on Pittsburgh money after the Tua decision and 84 percent of the handle is on the Steelers. The counter is the price: laying the hook against a public favorite in Week 1, with Pittsburgh's own secondary thinned by DeShon Elliott's IR stint. Lay -3.5; do not lay 4.
No pick. One panel took the over at 41.5 and ranked it; two took the under at 42.5. Atlanta's missing pass rush argues over; Tua's first start and a Pittsburgh offense that will lean on the run argue under. Our model's 43.9 is its over-run on a low number. Split, no play.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call. Where the panel's written case cites a raw number of its own, the calibrated number is the one printed here.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
