Chicago Bears at Carolina Panthers. Lean: Chicago Bears -3. Pick: Under 47.5.

Spread.Chicago -3 is a modest lean. Our calibrated number is Bears -3.7, only 0.7 points beyond this market; the model's poor ATS record makes that insufficient by itself. Carolina's missing starting tackles provide the stronger matchup argument: replacement protection increases the risk of stalled possessions and limits Young's ability to exploit Chicago's defense. Patrick Jones missing practice and Bobby Brown being limited also threaten Carolina's defensive depth. However, these are Wednesday participation reports, not Sunday exclusions. The market has already moved Chicago from -2.5 to -3, so much of the obvious injury disadvantage is priced. Counterarguments matter: Carolina has Walker and Freeling as replacements, added starting linebacker Okereke, and Chicago traded Dexter after our ratings froze. Williams retaining Johnson offers offensive continuity, whereas Carolina changes play-callers despite retaining Canales. I favor Chicago's offensive reliability, but laying the key three and lacking a readable complete Bears practice report keep conviction low.
Total.Applying the specified 1.2-point historical correction reduces our total from 46.34 to 45.14, 2.36 below 47.5. Carolina's tackle absences and Brooks' limited practice support the under through protection and offensive-depth concerns. The over case is substantial: Chicago lost defensive personnel, Carolina's defensive front has availability concerns, both quarterbacks return, and Idzik could improve offensive execution. Light wind offers no meaningful under adjustment; an uncertain thunderstorm chance is not enough. FanDuel reports an opening 45.5 rising to 47.5, unlike the dossier's later opening capture, so the broader movement favors scoring. At the current number I narrowly prefer under, with the offensive-line concern outweighing defensive attrition. FanDuel's -120 under price reduces the attraction; no verified pace data justify an additional adjustment.
Where our number looks wrong. The frozen ratings miss Dexter's departure and all injury effects, including Carolina's tackle absences and Chicago's Bryant loss. The unchanged-head-coach flag also misses Carolina's switch to Brad Idzik calling plays. These omissions pull in opposite directions; Bears -3.7 is not a trustworthy measured edge. The raw-margin and calibrated-number sign conventions also warrant an audit. I could not extract a complete current Bears practice report from the official page.

Spread. So the case has to come from news, and the news runs one way. Carolina opens without both 2025 starting tackles: Ikem Ekwonu (ruptured patellar tendon, PUP) and Taylor Moton (blood clots in the lung, NFI/IR). They start free-agent LT Rasheed Walker, first-round rookie RT Monroe Freeling and new C Luke Fortner in front of Bryce Young, whose offense was 27th in points (19.0) and 26th in yards per play in 2025. Both backs, Hubbard (hamstring) and Brooks (groin), are limited and will split carries. Chicago's absences are thinner: nickel Kyler Gordon on PUP through at least Week 4, Trapilo still rehabbing, while Odunze, Swift and Burden all trend to play. Carolina's counterpunch is real, Jaelan Phillips against Braxton Jones, which is why this is a lean and not a full-size bet.
Total. Our model says 46.3, and its documented +1.2 over-prediction bias corrects that to roughly 45.1, under a 47.5 market. The NWS has Charlotte partly sunny near 90 Sunday with no rain and light wind, so conditions do not suppress scoring; the under case is personnel and pace. Carolina was 24th in plays per game (59.7) and 27th in scoring (19.0), and now starts a backup LT and a rookie RT against Chicago's front with both backs limited in practice. Sharp Football's implied totals, 24.75 Chicago and 21.75 Carolina, sum to 46.5, already beneath the number. The counterweight is real: the total climbed from 44.5 over the summer and one tracker shows 43% of bets but 92% of money on the over. But our captures show it drifting back down since 8/30 (DraftKings 47.5 to 46.5, BetMGM 47.5 to 47).
Where our number looks wrong.Three places. First, the model is admittedly blind to injuries, and this game's injury ledger is heavily one-sided: Carolina is missing both 2025 starting tackles, its 2025 sack leader (Scourton, ACL), a rotational DT (Wharton, PUP) and its Week 1 OLB2 (Jones II, back), while Chicago is missing a nickel corner and depth. The 2.9-point market line does price most of that (the tackle news is from July and the line opened after it), but our raw 3.57-point rating gap is derived from a 2025 roster Carolina no longer fields. Second, the frozen 8/19 ratings cut the other way too and the model does not get credit for it: Carolina won the NFC South and made the playoffs in 2025, then spent roughly $165M on Phillips and Lloyd, so expected_wins of 6.62 and a -3.39 rating look harsh for a division winner - that is the strongest argument against my own side. Third, the calibration map turning a raw -1.4 into -3.7 is doing a lot of work here; the raw model actually agrees with the market's short number more than the calibrated one does, and given 47.6% holdout ATS I trust the raw margin over the stretched output.

Spread. So this pick leans on news the model can't see. Carolina opens the season without both starting tackles, Ikem Ekwonu (PUP, torn patellar tendon) and Taylor Moton (NFI, blood clot), forcing a patchwork line in front of Bryce Young against a Bears defense built to pressure young QBs. That mismatch is weeks old and largely priced in already, but it's real and durable, not a one-week blip, and the market has moved toward Chicago (open -2.5 to now -3) rather than away from it. Public money is heavily on Chicago (69% of bets, 85% of money per VegasInsider), a mild caution flag against a square favorite, but the trench mismatch plus Ben Johnson's second-year continuity with Caleb Williams tips this toward Chicago covering a still-modest number. A lean, not a strong conviction play.
Total. Our totals model (46.3) already sits under the market's 47.5, and in holdout testing it has run about 1.2 points above actual closing totals, meaning its true implied number is closer to 45, well south of where books have drifted. Carolina is missing both starting tackles, which should produce negative plays, sacks, and short, stalled drives that cost total offensive snaps more than they create short-field points for Chicago. Weather is a non-factor: forecast is roughly 90F, dry, with no wind or precipitation flagged, so this isn't a weather-driven under. The total's rise from 44.5 to 47.5 over the past two weeks looks more like public appetite for a Ben Johnson/Caleb Williams shootout narrative than fresh, game-specific information. I'll fade that drift and take the under, with only moderate confidence given the totals model's own mediocre track record and the genuine chance Chicago simply piles up points regardless of Carolina's protection.
Where our number looks wrong. The model's own documentation admits it: preseason-frozen ratings can't see that Carolina is starting the year without either projected starting tackle, a structural, weeks-old problem, and the injuries table is empty, so it has no way to weight that against a Bears pass rush suited to attack a rookie-ish protection scheme.
The call, written up
Carolina opens without both 2025 starting tackles (Ikem Ekwonu on PUP, Taylor Moton on NFI), its sack leader Nic Scourton (ACL) and OLB Patrick Jones II, starting three new linemen including a rookie at right tackle, with Brad Idzik calling plays for the first time. Chicago is missing far less: Rome Odunze and Ozzy Trapilo are limited, Gervon Dexter and Coby Bryant are gone. Lay -3; do not lay 3.5.
Carolina protecting Bryce Young behind a patched line, the league's 27th-ranked scoring offense last year at 24th in pace, and a Chicago offense that lost its top receiver and center all point under. Our model reads 46.3 and, after its over-run, closer to 45, comfortably under 47.5. A 90-degree Charlotte afternoon does not change it. The number has climbed from 44.5 in May to 47.5 on over money, which is the argument against. DraftKings is already 46.5, so take 47.5 where it lasts.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call. Where the panel's written case cites a raw number of its own, the calibrated number is the one printed here.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
