Spread.Miami +3.5 is a modest, price-sensitive position. The directly consulted BetMGM page displays that number, although it conflicts with the dossier’s timestamped +3; synchronization is uncertain. Our Miami -2.9 projection disagrees with the displayed market by 6.4 points, but I would discard most of that apparent edge. Miami’s roster teardown and Willis’ limited starting experience make the old offensive baseline questionable. Conversely, Cousins and an offensive line featuring Tyler Linderbaum offer reasons Las Vegas can outperform its 2025 offense. The actionable update is Bowers’ expected absence, with Jeanty’s availability still requiring confirmation. That reduces my willingness to lay more than a field goal with Las Vegas. The dossier’s move from -3.5 to -3 is consistent with partial incorporation of this news; it does not establish causation. Reported Raiders-heavy money splits are not proof of informed action. Getting the hook makes Miami attractive despite its substantial offensive uncertainty; at +3 my conviction would fall.

Total.Under 40.5 is a small lean. Applying the stipulated 1.2-point historical correction reduces 41.71 to 40.51, leaving essentially no model edge before current news. Bowers’ expected absence then argues for reduced receiving efficiency, while Jeanty’s ankle creates additional uncertainty. Miami’s rebuilt receiving group and new quarterback increase the risk of stalled possessions. The over case is credible: indoor conditions, Willis’ rushing ability, improved Raiders personnel and weak defensive baselines can produce efficient scoring; Bell’s unrestricted availability helps Miami. I cannot verify a current pace advantage for either side. Moreover, the dossier already shows falling totals, so the injury argument is partly priced. I prefer under at 40.5, but the alternative 39.5 meaningfully erodes that position.

Where our number looks wrong.Miami -2.9 is too aggressive given the uncertainty surrounding its rebuilt offense. The model cannot establish that Miami remains three points better on a neutral field, and its calibration changes the raw home margin from -0.9 to +2.9, reversing the favorite. Las Vegas’ personnel and coaching changes also weaken reliance on its dreadful 2025 offense. Separately, the injury-blind projection misses Bowers’ expected absence. These competing errors do not validate a six-point betting edge.

Spread. Our number makes Miami a 2.9-point favorite against a market of Las Vegas -3/-3.5, a 6.4-point gap that reads 'lean away.' I land on Miami, but not for our model's reason. The decisive fresh input is Brock Bowers: meniscus trim Tuesday, out for the opener (ESPN, 9/9/26). He is the Raiders' only above-replacement pass catcher, and with WR Dont'e Thornton Jr. on IR (9/8) Kirk Cousins is left with Tre Tucker, Jalen Nailor and Jack Bech inside a scheme installed by a first-year head coach. Ashton Jeanty returned to practice Wednesday after a two-week ankle absence (ESPN, 9/9) and should play, but a snap count is likely. Miami is genuinely bad, with no Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle on the roster and Malik Willis starting, and the market already knows it. That is exactly why laying three is unattractive: three points is barely more than home field, the number has already ticked from -3.5 to -3, and 60% of consensus tickets sit on Las Vegas. Take the key number and the plus money.

Total. Our totals model says 41.71 against a 40.5-41 market, a 0.8-point over lean, but its documented holdout bias runs about 1.2 points high, so corrected it is fractionally under. The news points the same way. The total was bet up roughly a point from open (39.5-40.5 to 40.5-41) before Brock Bowers' knee procedure was reported on 9/9; his absence, plus WR Dont'e Thornton Jr. on IR (9/8), strips the Raiders' passing game, and Las Vegas was already the worst offense in football by EPA in 2025 (-0.216). Miami counters with Malik Willis, a bottom-of-the-league receiver group and a first-year head coach who will lean on De'Von Achane and shorten the game. Two brand-new schemes in a Week 1 opener rarely produce efficiency. It is a dome, so there is no weather to help either side, and the number is already low, which caps the edge.

Where our number looks wrong. The v3 ratings make Miami about three points better than Las Vegas (-1.87 vs -4.91) and give Miami 7.21 expected wins. That is a stale-roster artifact: Miami's 2025 record and EPA were produced by Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, none of whom are on the 2026 roster (ESPN roster, 9/9/26), and the ratings are frozen at 8/19 so the teardown is not priced. Rating a Malik Willis team with the league's worst receiver group as a neutral-field favorite over anyone is not credible; ESPN's own preview has Miami as a dog in all 17 games. So the -6.4 gap and its 'lean AWAY' label should carry essentially zero weight here - I finish on the same side for unrelated reasons (Bowers out, a key number, a soft market move). Second, the empty injuries table meant the model was blind to the single biggest fact of the week: the Raiders' best offensive player is out.

Spread. Our v3 number likes Miami by roughly 2.9 vs a market favoring Las Vegas by 3, a 6.4-point gap the model itself flags as low-confidence and with no proven ATS edge (47.6% held-out). Two live-news items point the same direction the model does, for reasons the model can't see. Raiders TE Brock Bowers had a meniscus trim this week and is OUT for the opener (NFL.com, 9/9/26), removing Kirk Cousins' top target in his Vegas debut under new HC Klint Kubiak. RB Ashton Jeanty, out since an 8/23 ankle sprain, only returned to practice 9/9/26 and is a game-time call (ESPN, 9/9/26) - so Las Vegas's best skill-position pieces are compromised or clouded in a first game under a brand-new staff. Miami isn't clean either - Tua left for Atlanta and Waddle was traded to Denver this offseason, with Malik Willis making his first career start for new HC Jeff Hafley. But the market has already drifted from -3.5 to -3 since 8/30, so some of this is priced. Taking the points on Miami rather than leaning hard.

Total. Our totals model (41.71) and the market (~40.5-41) are already close once you apply the model's known +1.2 high bias, so it gives no real lean either way. The swing factor is fresh news: Brock Bowers, Las Vegas's top receiving weapon, is out after a meniscus trim (NFL.com, 9/9/26), and Ashton Jeanty is a game-time decision after missing two weeks with an ankle injury (ESPN, 9/9/26) - both cut into the Raiders' scoring efficiency under Klint Kubiak's HC debut. Miami is equally thin on offense: Tua and Waddle are both gone, and Malik Willis making his first career start for new coach Jeff Hafley reads more like a conservative, mistake-avoiding script than a shootout, even with De'Von Achane fully healthy. Two new staffs installing systems, two clouded skill groups, and a fixed dome removing any weather boost - lean under.

Where our number looks wrong. The model is completely blind to injuries (its own injuries table is empty for NFL), so it has no idea Bowers is out or that Jeanty is banged up - it just happens that the raw rating gap, driven mostly by 2025 point differential plus the correctly-flagged coaching/QB turnover on both sides, lines up with what the fresh injury news also suggests. That is two independent signals agreeing by coincidence, not the model 'knowing' anything about this week's game - it should not be read as validation of the number, and the calibration map's tendency to stretch large raw margins means the -6.4 gap is probably overstated versus the true disagreement.

The call, written up

On the spread

Two bad teams and one key number. Las Vegas was 3-14 with the league's worst offense last year and opens under a first-year coach with Kirk Cousins, who beat the No. 1 overall pick for the job, without Brock Bowers (meniscus trim, out) and Dont'e Thornton (IR), with Ashton Jeanty just back from a two-week ankle absence. Our number makes Miami the better team, and that number is stale: it is reading a roster that had Tua, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, and the 2026 Dolphins start Malik Willis with two rookie receivers outside under Jeff Hafley. The Bowers news is what tips it: Cousins' only above-replacement pass catcher is gone in week one. Take +3 (DraftKings) or +3.5 where it survives; do not lay through the number.

On the total

Las Vegas was bottom of the league on offense last year and now opens without Bowers; Miami starts Willis with two rookies outside. The total was bet up a point before the Bowers news and has not come back down. Our model's slight over lean is its low-total shrinkage.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
