Spread.Jacksonville +2.5 at FanDuel (-112) is my pick. Edge Labs makes Jacksonville a 1.1-point favorite, a 3.6-point disagreement with the market; given its failed ATS validation, I substantially discount that gap. My judgment is closer to Denver -0.5, leaving a modest Jacksonville advantage. Lawrence's efficient opener and Denver's problems defending the run support the visitor, particularly with Denver returning from Monday-night travel. Jacksonville's previously flagged tackles and Meyers were active Sunday; Brian Thomas Jr.'s shoulder is the more relevant new concern, although Coen expects him to play. The opposing case matters: Denver's home advantage, Waddle addition and potential correction of costly penalties make extrapolating its opening loss dangerous. The market already prices a close game, and Jacksonville +2.5 offers no protection against a three-point defeat. Reported Jacksonville handle supports the direction but proves no informational edge. I favor Jacksonville's offensive execution, with conviction capped by injury uncertainty and the missing key number.

Total.Under 44.5 at FanDuel (-110), narrowly. Applying the stated 1.2-point correction takes our model from 45.82 to 44.62, essentially market-neutral. The under case rests on Denver's drive-killing mistakes, a first-time play-caller still establishing execution, Jacksonville's pressure production and Thomas's shoulder limitation. Lawrence's four touchdowns on 23 attempts should not be projected forward unchanged. The over case is substantial: Denver's tackling failures invite explosive gains, Waddle improves its scoring ceiling, and the early weather outlook offers little suppression. Jacksonville's defensive depth also takes a hit if Green misses out. Captured increases at DraftKings and BetMGM strengthen the over case but also leave under bettors a higher entry. I lean toward fewer sustained scoring drives; this is a small position, with no verified pace advantage.

Where our number looks wrong. The Jacksonville -1.1 estimate is too precise and probably too favorable to Jacksonville. Denver's personnel and coaching context has changed despite unchanged QB/HC flags: Jaylen Waddle joined the receiving corps, and Davis Webb now calls plays. Those changes create upside and transition risk absent from the model. The injury scan also mislabels Harrison and Van Lanen as guards and misses Thomas's current shoulder issue. Separately, the totals model's prescribed 1.2-point bias correction reduces 45.82 to 44.62, effectively eliminating its apparent over edge.

Spread.Market has Denver -2.5, which is essentially a pick'em plus standard home field, so the market rates these teams roughly even. Multiple independent signals disagree and point at Jacksonville as the better team: 2025 point differential (Jax +8.1/game vs Den +5.3), our own rating (Jax 2.66 vs Den 0.86), and Week 1 form. Jacksonville dismantled Cleveland 34-10 (Lawrence 18/23, 245, 4 TD), while Denver was embarrassed 31-10 at KC, with a rusty Bo Nix off a broken ankle (17/28, 131, INT, fumble, sacked on the opening snap) and a supposedly elite defense giving up 221 rushing yards. Getting the stronger team as a road dog of less than a field goal is the value. The real counter is Jacksonville's banged-up interior line (two guards on the report) against Denver's pass rush, plus regression off a blowout of a bad Browns team and Denver's altitude edge, so I keep this a clear lean rather than a full-size bet.

Total. Two defenses that finished 2025 near the top in defensive EPA (Den -0.089, Jax -0.097), a Denver offense that managed only 10 points in Week 1 with a rusty Nix off ankle surgery, and a road team that may lean on ball control all argue for points being harder to come by than 44-45. The push-back is real, Denver's altitude and thin air aid the kicking game and scoring, and the forecast is benign (partly cloudy, ~78F, light wind, no suppression), which is why this is only a lean, not a strong under. Our totals model (45.82) leans over but is documented as worse than the market and runs ~1.2 high, so I discount it toward neutral and side with the down-moving number.

Where our number looks wrong.Given the documented 47.6% holdout ATS, I am leaning on the 2025 body of work, Week 1 tape and the OL-injury read, not the model number, but the model is not pointing the wrong way here, if anything it is underselling Jacksonville.

Spread.Vegas has Denver at -2.5 at home, barely above a coin flip, despite our v3 rating ranking Jacksonville the clearly better team even before Week 1 (rating 2.66 vs 0.86, 10.17 vs 8.4 expected wins). Week 1 tape reinforced that gap rather than closing it: Jacksonville throttled Cleveland 34-10 with a complete performance from Trevor Lawrence (4 TD passes, 24-0 halftime lead), while Denver looked disjointed under new play-caller Davis Webb, Bo Nix was rusty in his first start off two ankle surgeries (17/28, 131 yards, 69.2 rating), and the run defense that anchored Denver's 2025 season allowed 173 yards to Kenneth Walker III. Denver's altitude/home field is real but not worth more than a field goal here. Take Jacksonville +2.5.

Total. Our totals model likes the over (45.82 vs. 44.3 market) but it runs about 1.2 points hot versus closing numbers historically, which erases nearly the entire lean once you correct for that bias. Both defenses graded elite in 2025 (Denver -0.089 def EPA/play, Jacksonville -0.097), and Week 1 showed real offensive friction on both sides: Denver's attack was disjointed under a new play-caller with its top two perimeter receivers held to 3 catches for 13 yards, and Jacksonville's 34 points came against a Cleveland defense that projects as one of the league's worst, not a fair proxy for what Denver's unit can do. No wind or precipitation signal has surfaced yet for this Sunday's Mile High kickoff. Two good defenses and one offense (Denver's) still finding itself argue for the under at 44.5.

Where our number looks wrong. But that number was effectively set by the preseason prior plus one game's worth of margin data, and it is underweighting how lopsided Week 1 was on tape: Jacksonville validated its much higher preseason rating with a clean, complete win, while Denver's box score (31-10) actually flatters a performance that included a rusty QB, a disjointed new offensive scheme, and a run defense that got gashed. The rating only updates on final margins and moves slowly game to game, so it hasn't caught up to what the film already shows, the market's -2.5 for Denver at home looks generous given the current form gap.

The call, written up

On the spread

The market has Denver at -2.5 at home, essentially a pick'em plus home field, treating these teams as even. Several signals disagree and point to Jacksonville as the better side: 2025 point differential, our own rating (Jax 2.66 vs Den 0.86), and Week 1 form, where Jacksonville dismantled Cleveland 34-10 behind four Lawrence touchdowns while Denver lost 31-10 and gave up 220-plus rushing. Brian Thomas (shoulder) is expected to play. Take Jacksonville +2.5.

On the total

Small under 44.5. Two defenses that finished 2025 near the top in EPA, a Denver offense that managed 10 points with a rusty Nix, and a total already drifting toward 43.5 at some books all point down. Our totals model (45.8) leans over but nets to neutral after its high bias. Modest under at 44.5.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
