Keys to the game
  • Bosa, Height, and Thompson ruled out; Evans questionable; McCaffrey and Trent Williams have no game designation.
  • Brissett full Friday; Garrett Williams cleared; Melton and Lopez questionable; Taylor-Demerson out.
  • Will Johnson placed on injured reserve; Starling Thomas promoted.
What beats it

On the spread. If Evans plays effectively while Melton and Lopez cannot contribute, Purdy and McCaffrey could exploit Arizona's weakened defense sufficiently to cover despite San Francisco's front-seven losses. Garrett Williams' return does not replace Will Johnson. That scenario materially weakens the lean.

On the total. Against an under, diminished San Francisco pressure could revive Arizona's offense while its secondary injuries help Purdy. Against an over, an ineffective or absent Evans and another Arizona protection failure could suppress both teams' scoring. The model does not resolve these competing effects.

Read Ace's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for San Francisco -7.5 is its superior quarterback and established offense facing an Arizona team coming off an offensive collapse and losing secondary personnel. That justifies substantial favoritism. However, Seattle pressured Brissett on 41.9% of dropbacks last week; San Francisco's depleted front is poorly positioned to reproduce that disruption. Bosa's absence is a calf injury, not merely rest, and Saturday's defensive-line reinforcements demonstrate the depth problem. Brissett practiced fully, while Garrett Williams returns without a designation. I lean Arizona +7.5 at -108 because reduced pressure offers a specific route to sustained possessions and a one-score finish. The captured move from -8.5 to -7.5 already incorporates some deterioration, so this is not an undiscovered injury angle. Our -10.8 overstates confidence: calibration stretches an 8.5-point raw margin while ignoring current personnel. Arizona's own coverage losses and Purdy's form prevent a normal-unit bet. This is a LOW lean at the available number, not a request for an unavailable extra point.

Total. The market near 48 reasonably balances San Francisco's productive offense against Arizona's uneven attack, with defensive injuries supporting scoring. The under case is receiver attrition and Arizona's 151-yard performance last week. Applying the specified historical bias correction lowers our model from 45.97 to 44.77, but that is not an injury-adjusted fair total. The over case is equally substantial: San Francisco averages 31 points, Arizona generated 393 yards in its opener, and both defenses have significant personnel losses. Mild weather supplies no under advantage. Captured movement is mixed across books, not a uniform retreat from 48.5. I have no actionable total view at 47.5 to 48.5; the required under label denotes only the side I would reconsider at 50. The existing Under 48 lock remains unchanged.

Where our number looks wrong.SF -10.8 treats a calibration-expanded margin as if the current roster supports it. The model cannot account directly for the clustered defensive-line and receiver losses. Arizona's secondary losses offset some adjustment, but the apparent 3.3-point model advantage is not a demonstrated betting edge.

Keys to the game
  • Final injury designations: Bosa, Robinson, Thompson, Height out for SF; Evans questionable
  • 49ers 2-0 (27-7, 35-13); Cardinals 1-1 (26-14 win, 31-7 loss); Purdy 80.4% completion
  • Bosa out multiple weeks; clear 66F at Levi's; both Cardinals games stayed under
What beats it

On the spread. Division dogs of more than a touchdown cover often; without Bosa the 49ers lose their best pressure source against a short-passing Brissett, and a depleted receiver room could leave San Francisco winning by exactly a touchdown.

On the total. San Francisco's offense has scored 62 points in two games, and without Bosa, Arizona may move the ball enough for a 31-20 type game that clears 48.

Spread.Market-first: San Francisco is 2-0 with wins of 27-7 and 35-13, Purdy is completing over 80 percent, and Arizona has a new head coach and Brissett at quarterback after a 31-7 home loss to Seattle. The market opened around -8.5 (DraftKings as high as -11.5) and has settled at -7.5 everywhere after Nick Bosa was ruled out with a calf injury; the move is roughly the value of an elite edge rusher. Our number is San Francisco by 10.8, a 3.3-point gap, but the calibration map stretches big favorites and this is a division game. The receiver room is thin: Demarcus Robinson is out and Mike Evans is questionable on a limited week. I lean 49ers at -7.5 because the Cardinals offense has shown very little outside one upset of the Chargers and the 49ers' run game and short passing do not depend on the outside receivers, but a half point past seven in a division game with Bosa out is a lean, not a bet.

Total. This market is already locked for the panel at Under 48; I still file it. The total opened 46.5 to 48.5 and sits at 47.5 to 48.5 now. Our totals model is 46.0, about 44.8 after its 1.2-point high bias, a lean-sized gap. The under case: both Arizona games went under, Brissett and Purdy both work short and underneath, San Francisco's receiver room is missing Robinson with Evans questionable, and Arizona scored only 7 against Seattle. The over case: without Bosa the 49ers pass rush is weaker, San Francisco has scored 27 and 35, and a clear, mild day gives no weather help to the under. I still lean under at 48 or better but the Bosa absence trims it; a lean, not a new bet.

Where our number looks wrong. Our 10.8 is inflated by the calibration map's stretch on large margins and it does not see Bosa out; San Francisco by about 8 to 9 is closer to fair, which leaves little over the -7.5 market.

Keys to the game
  • 49ers enter 2-0, Cardinals 1-1 after lopsided loss to Seattle
  • Jacoby Brissett (hip) removed from injury report, will play
  • 49ers rule out Bosa, Height, Robinson, Thompson; Evans questionable
What beats it

On the spread. A large number against a divisional foe playing must-not-lose desperate football can draw backdoor cover value late, and Brissett has been more efficient (67.7% completion) than his weapons suggest, but that is a generic large-favorite argument without a specific catalyst, which is not enough to act on.

On the total. San Francisco's offense (Purdy, McCaffrey) can put up points in bunches when healthy and could pull away, and game-control can turn into extra scoring snaps against a weaker Arizona defense if Arizona is forced into more drop-backs while trailing.

Read Buck's full case

Spread.San Francisco is priced a 7.5-point home favorite, and the strongest explanation is the talent and record gap: the 49ers are 2-0 with a top-10 pass defense (175 yards allowed per game) and a healthy-enough roster (Bosa, Robinson, Height and Thompson out, but McCaffrey, Greenlaw and Trent Williams all cleared), while Arizona is 1-1 off a lopsided loss to Seattle and starting a limited-arsenal Jacoby Brissett against exactly the defense built to contain him. That gap is real and already fully public - both injury reports were finalized Thursday-Friday and Arizona's team site confirmed Brissett will play. I do not have an incremental fact the market has not already absorbed: no fresh line move, no new absence, no weather angle (68-70F and clear at Levi's). Rather than manufacture a case for backdoor points on a big number, or chase a favorite that is already 7.5, I have no real edge here and am passing with no view on ATS.

Total.San Francisco's defense ranks among the league's stingier passing units (175 yards/game allowed) and Arizona's offense was held to a lopsided loss last week behind a Brissett-led unit that, while efficient in a checkdown sense, has managed only two touchdown passes through two games. San Francisco's own offense is intact after resting McCaffrey and Greenlaw through a maintenance day, so this reads like a 49ers-control game that keeps possessions modest for Arizona rather than a shootout. Weather is a non-factor (68-70F, clear). None of this is new; it is the same profile that has already priced the total down from an opening 46.5-48 to a 47.5-48.5 band. I would take the under only as a lean at the current best number, not a bet, since the public information is already substantially reflected in the market.

More key facts
  • 49ers defense allows 175 passing yards per game, 9th fewest in NFL
  • Levi's Stadium forecast is 68-70F, partly cloudy, no rain

The call, written up

No call on the spread

San Francisco at home against Arizona, San Francisco -7.5. No pick. The case for San Francisco: a second panel leaned the 49ers at -7.5, since the run game and short passing do not depend on the injured receivers and Arizona has shown little offense outside one win over the Chargers. The third panel found no incremental fact beyond what the market already reflects. No pick on the spread.

On the total

Under 48. The total opened near 46.5, peaked at 48.5, and has settled back to 47.5-48, with the sharpest book pricing the under at a plus price and drawing the larger average bet. San Francisco's receiving corps is thinned beyond one hip-questionable receiver, and Arizona was held to 151 total yards in last week's loss, capping scoring on both sides. Weather is a non-factor, with a mild, dry forecast at kickoff.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
