Keys to the game
  • Dowdle and Dunker ruled out; Warren, Pittman, Dean and Porter questionable.
  • Allen full Friday with no designation; Hill doubtful; Iosivas out; Burrow has no listed designation.
  • Unchanged starting offensive line; six sacks and 28 pressures allowed through two games.
What beats it

On the spread. If Warren and Pittman play effectively and both starting corners are available, Pittsburgh's offense and coverage could outperform the injury-discounted expectation. McCarthy simplifying the installation could help immediately. Cincinnati's defensive breakout also came against Houston without Nico Collins. A three-point Cincinnati win loses at -3.5.

On the total. Dean and Porter being unavailable could let Cincinnati score enough to overwhelm the under. Effective returns by Warren and Pittman, a simpler Pittsburgh game plan, lighter winds, or turnover-created short fields would further weaken it. Cincinnati's two-game defensive sample includes a Houston offense missing Nico Collins.

Read Ace's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for Cincinnati -3.5 is its improved defensive front against Pittsburgh's struggling protection, compounded by Pittsburgh's offensive injuries and uncertain cornerback availability. That explains the market better than our near-pick'em rating. Cincinnati recorded four sacks in each opening game; Pittsburgh has allowed six sacks and 28 pressures. Friday's report improves Cincinnati's outlook by clearing Jonathan Allen, while Dowdle remains out and Warren, Pittman, Dean and Porter remain questionable. However, the move from earlier Cincinnati -1.5/-2.5 numbers has already charged buyers for much of that advantage. DraftKings' displayed Cincinnati-heavy splits establish popularity, not additional value. I would not commit a normal unit. Two games provide limited evidence, Houston faced Cincinnati without Nico Collins, and Pittsburgh can simplify its offense while its pass rush keeps this within a field goal. The model's home -0.1 is insufficient reason to oppose these matchup changes.

Total. The market's 42.5-43 total reflects Pittsburgh's offensive struggles and Cincinnati's improved defense; the earlier decline already prices substantial pessimism. Our 46.01 projection becomes 44.81 after subtracting the documented 1.2-point upward bias, so it supplies a legitimate over counterargument. Over also benefits if Pittsburgh's questionable corners cannot contain Chase and Higgins, or pressure creates short fields. Nevertheless, Pittsburgh's protection problems, Dowdle's absence and uncertain Warren/Pittman workloads give the under a concrete matchup basis. Forecast crosswinds offer modest additional support, although I could not verify an official hourly forecast. I lean under only at captured 43 (-118), retaining the push at 43. This is not a normal-unit bet: Cincinnati can drive the scoring itself, Pittsburgh may improve with a simpler plan, and the market has already moved considerably. No verified pace advantage strengthens the case.

Where our number looks wrong. The margin-only prior appears too favorable to Pittsburgh. It does not directly incorporate Cincinnati's Lawrence/Allen defensive-front additions or Pittsburgh's protection and offensive-installation problems under Mike McCarthy. Treating Cincinnati's 2025 defensive weakness as persistent also inflates Pittsburgh's scoring expectation. Two games are insufficient to quantify the full correction, but home -0.1 is not a trustworthy fair price.

Keys to the game
  • Dowdle and Dunker out; Pittman, Porter, Warren, Dean questionable; Iosivas out and Hill doubtful for Cincinnati
  • Steelers 31st in offensive EPA/play and last in success rate; both defenses top five
  • Pittsburgh averaging 11.5 ppg; Rodgers 5.2 yards per attempt; Bengals -3.5, total 42.5
What beats it

On the spread. Pittsburgh has scored 16 offensive points in two games and is now without its lead back and a starting guard; if Cincinnati's top-five defense holds it to 10 or 13, Burrow only needs two touchdowns to cover. The early-week money on Cincinnati moved the line through the 3 and it has stuck.

On the total. Burrow against a secondary with two questionable corners can put up 27 alone, and Pittsburgh turnovers create short fields; our model and Cincinnati's scoring rate both sit above 42.5.

Read Stack's full case

Spread.Market-first: Cincinnati opened -1.5 and was bet through the 3 to -3.5 because Burrow is healthy and the Bengals are 2-0 while Pittsburgh's offense is 31st in EPA per play, averaging 11.5 points, with Rodgers at 5.2 yards per attempt. The final report adds to that: Pittsburgh is without RB Rico Dowdle and rookie G Gennings Dunker, and Pittman, Warren, Porter and Dean are all questionable after limited weeks. Those are real reasons the Bengals are favored. Cincinnati is thinner up front too, with DT B.J. Hill doubtful. Our number (PIT -0.1) leans the same way but has no ATS edge. A lean at +3.5, not a bet, because Pittsburgh's offense may simply not score.

Total. The under case: both defenses rank top five in EPA per play, Pittsburgh's offense averages 11.5 points and is now without Dowdle and a starting guard, Cincinnati is without WR Iosivas, and division games tend to play tighter. The over case: Burrow is healthy behind an offense averaging 26.5 points, Pittsburgh's secondary has Porter and Dean questionable, and our model says 46.0 (about 44.8 after its bias). Weather is dry with a 13 mph north wind at most.

Where our number looks wrong. Our PIT -0.1 is built on a 2025 in which Burrow missed much of the season and cannot see how poorly Pittsburgh's 2026 offense has played; the market's -3.5 is the better number and our 3.5-point gap is mostly that stale prior.

Keys to the game
  • Bengals defense is tied for 2nd in EPA/play allowed, tied for the league sack lead, and has allowed zero passing touchdowns through two games
  • Aaron Rodgers threw for 84 yards on 22 first-half attempts in Week 2, with a lost fumble returned for a touchdown and an interception, as the Steelers fell to 0-2
What beats it

On the spread. Aaron Rodgers is a future Hall of Famer who has had bad individual games before bouncing back, and Pittsburgh's own defense/Mike Tomlin's program has a long history of playing well at home in division games regardless of record; if Cincinnati's pass rush can't consistently get home against a healthier Steelers O-line this week, a short week-3 letdown from Cincinnati could easily keep this inside a field goal.

On the total. Joe Burrow's own offense could be more explosive than the total assumes if Pittsburgh's banged-up skill corps (Dowdle out, Pittman limited) can't keep pace, turning this into a track-meet-adjacent, lower-than-expected defensive stand for Pittsburgh rather than a mutual defensive struggle; a short week can also produce sloppy special-teams/turnover scores that spike a total unpredictably.

Read Buck's full case

Spread.Cincinnati is favored on the road in a division game largely because its defense has been one of the best units in football through two weeks: tied for 2nd in defensive EPA/play, tied for the league lead in sacks (8), and the only defense yet to allow a passing touchdown. Pittsburgh, by contrast, is 0-2, and Aaron Rodgers had a rough Week 2 (84 yards on 22 first-half attempts, a lost fumble returned for a touchdown, and an interception) against a good Patriots defense. Joe Burrow is fully healthy and off the injury report. The number has been stable at Bengals -3.5 all week, suggesting the market largely agrees, but a defense allowing zero passing touchdowns through two games against a struggling, turnover-prone Rodgers offense supports laying the points at a price this data hasn't fully separated from a generic 'good team vs. rebuilding team' read.

Total. This total lines up cleanly with recent history and current form: three of the last four Bengals-Steelers meetings finished under 42.5, and the under is 4-0 in Cincinnati's last four AFC North games. That trend is now reinforced by this season's specific data, a Bengals defense that has not allowed a passing touchdown and is tied for the league sack lead, facing a Steelers offense whose Week 2 showing (84 first-half passing yards, a pick, a fumble-six) was one of the worst of Rodgers' career. Weather at Acrisure Stadium is a complete non-factor (70F, light wind, dry), so this is a clean matchup-and-trend case rather than a conditions-driven one. The total has already fallen from an opening range of 43.5-46.5 to 42.5, but the specific defensive/offensive form on both sides supports staying under even after that drop.

More key facts
  • The under has hit in 3 of the last 4 Bengals-Steelers meetings and is 4-0 in Cincinnati's last 4 AFC North games
  • Bengals defense has allowed zero passing touchdowns through two games while Rodgers posted just 84 first-half passing yards in Week 2

The call, written up

On the spread

Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers, Bengals -3.5. The line opened Cincinnati -1.5 and was bet through -3 to a -3.5 consensus. Pittsburgh's September 25 injury report lists running back Rico Dowdle and rookie guard Gennings Dunker out, with Pittman, Warren, Porter and Dean questionable; Cincinnati's own report clears Jonathan Allen of a designation while receiver Andrei Iosivas is out and defensive tackle B.J. Hill is doubtful. Cincinnati has recorded four sacks in each of its first two games against a Pittsburgh line that has allowed six sacks and 28 pressures.

On the total

Under 43. The total has fallen from an opening 46.5 to 42.5-43 as both defenses have ranked among the league's best in EPA per play and Pittsburgh's offense has averaged 11.5 points through two games. Weather at Acrisure Stadium is mild and dry, a non-factor. Our own total, 46.01 against a 42.6 market, disagrees but that gap is judged noise for this league. The counter-case is that Joe Burrow, fully healthy and off the injury report, could outscore a banged-up Pittsburgh secondary on his own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
