Keys to the game
  • Official transactions confirm Brown and Onwenu on injured reserve.
  • Friday report rules out Dre’Mont Jones, clears Davis of a game designation, and lists Regis doubtful.
  • Woodson and Raridon traveled; New England did not elevate an edge rusher despite its absences.
What beats it

On the spread. New England’s interior front can reproduce Denver’s disruption of Lawrence, while Davis strengthens coverage. If Woodson and Raridon both play effectively, Jacksonville’s personnel advantage narrows further. Maye can also improve against split-safety looks; the coverage tendency is not proof he will struggle again.

On the total. Lawrence benefits from reduced edge pressure and potentially weakened safety coverage; Jacksonville’s home offense rebounds, while Maye generates explosives against an imperfect pass rush. Healthy, effective Woodson would help the under, but an effective Raridon return would help New England’s offense. The lean is small enough that none of these uncertainties can be ignored.

Spread. The strongest explanation for Jacksonville’s favoritism is home field plus New England’s depleted offense: Brown and Onwenu are on IR, and Jacksonville’s split-safety coverage presents another difficult assignment for Maye. Those are public considerations, not undiscovered injuries. The captured move from early Jacksonville -1.5 to -2.5/-3 plausibly incorporates them. Our Jacksonville -0.6 looks too favorable to New England because the rating cannot directly account for these personnel losses. Friday’s Dre’Mont Jones exclusion and Saturday’s thin edge rotation strengthen Jacksonville’s case beyond the dossier’s practice list. However, Davis returning helps New England’s secondary, and Jacksonville’s protection problems against Denver give the Patriots a credible route to controlling this game. I lean Jacksonville specifically at BetMGM’s captured -2.5 (-110): winning by three pays, unlike laying three, and competing captured -2.5 prices are worse. That price advantage supports a lean, but I cannot establish enough residual matchup edge for a normal unit. DraftKings’ Patriots-heavy splits do not establish sharp opposition.

Total. The market’s 45.5 to 46 balances New England’s offensive losses and defensive strength against Jacksonville’s home scoring potential and favorable passing weather. Under benefits from Davis returning, Jacksonville’s protection concerns, and Brown/Onwenu remaining unavailable. Applying the supplied 1.2-point historical bias correction produces 43.23 from the model’s 44.43, but that is a mechanical adjustment to an inferior forecasting model, not an independent edge. The over case is substantial: New England’s depleted edge rotation and uncertain safety depth can improve Lawrence’s efficiency, Jacksonville scored 34 in its home opener, and light wind offers no scoring restraint. Captured totals have risen at several books rather than uniformly falling. I retain a LOW under lean at 46 (-110), without a normal-unit recommendation. This fresh assessment leaves the published Under 45.5 lock untouched.

Where our number looks wrong.Jacksonville -0.6 likely overstates New England’s current offensive strength: Brown and Onwenu are unavailable, while the rating only absorbs their effects indirectly through final margins. New England’s edge attrition also is not represented directly. These explain disagreement with the model without proving Jacksonville is undervalued by the market.

More key facts
  • Jacksonville’s coverage structure features quarters and Cover-6, a relevant challenge for Maye.
  • Jaguars reporting identifies sustained Denver pressure on Lawrence and Jacksonville’s inadequate pressure on Nix.
  • Opened live splits page displayed Jacksonville -3 (-102), New England +3 (-118), and Patriots-heavy spread betting.
  • Brown and Onwenu are on injured reserve.
  • New England’s first two results were a 13-10 loss and a 20-3 win.
  • Jacksonville’s 20-13 loss featured persistent pressure on Lawrence; reporting also emphasized stronger recent home scoring.
  • Saturday roster analysis confirms thin Patriots edge depth and unresolved Woodson/Raridon designations.
  • Forecast shows 84°F and light wind at kickoff, with only 7% precipitation probability.

Keys to the game
  • Patriots rule out Dre'Mont Jones and Hutchins; Onwenu on IR with Van Roten starting; Davis returns
  • Maye 4 INTs, weak under pressure; Jacksonville 8th in pressure rate; Jaguars -2.5
  • Jacksonville forecast 83F, 8 mph wind, no rain
What beats it

On the spread. New England is 2-0 ATS with a defense that has allowed very little, and it has won nine of its last ten road games. If Carlton Davis's return steadies the secondary and Maye avoids turnovers, a 20-17 Patriots win or a one-score loss inside 2.5 is very plausible.

On the total. With Jones and Hutchins out, Lawrence and the Jaguars' run game could post 27+ on their own, and Maye's turnovers create short fields; 46 is not a high bar in 83-degree dry conditions.

Spread.Market-first: Jacksonville -2.5/-3 prices two good teams with the home side healthier. New England is 2-0 straight up and against the spread, but its offense is missing WR A.J. Brown and RG Mike Onwenu (both IR, Greg Van Roten starting), Drake Maye has four interceptions and one touchdown pass and grades poorly under pressure, and Jacksonville ranks eighth in pressure rate. Friday's report adds to that gap: New England ruled out its two leading edge rushers, Dre'Mont Jones (team-high pressures in Week 1) and rookie Quintayvious Hutchins (IR), leaving Elijah Ponder and Gabe Jacas to rush Trevor Lawrence. Jacksonville's only notable absence is rookie DT Albert Regis (doubtful). Our number (JAX -0.6) points the other way, but it cannot see the Brown, Onwenu or pass-rush losses. The juice on Jacksonville -2.5 (-117 to -122) shows the market leaning toward -3; BetMGM's -2.5 at -110 is the best captured Jaguars price, and I lean it.

Total. The under 45.5 is already locked from Wednesday; this is a fresh read beside it. The number has drifted up from 45 to 45.5-46 with over juice at DraftKings, and the Patriots' loss of both starting edge rushers is a genuine point toward the over because it gives Lawrence more time. The under case still holds more weight for me: New England's passing game without A.J. Brown and Onwenu has produced little (one touchdown pass, four interceptions), both teams' Week 2 games finished 20-3 and 20-13, and our model's 44.4 (about 43.2 after its high bias) sits below the market. At 46 the under remains a lean for me, not a bet, because the pass-rush news cuts into it.

Where our number looks wrong. Our -0.6 rates New England on its 14-3 2025 season and cannot see that the Patriots are without A.J. Brown, Mike Onwenu and now both of their top edge rushers.

Keys to the game
  • A.J. Brown is on IR with a high ankle sprain and out until at least Week 6
  • Patriots LBs Dre'Mont Jones and Quintayvious Hutchins are both out; Jaguars have no notable game-status injuries
What beats it

On the spread. Drake Maye posted the league's best offensive EPA/play in 2025 even before this year's changes and has shown he can produce without a single top target, and if the Patriots' front seven depth (even without Jones/Hutchins) holds up against Lawrence, New England's overall roster quality could still be enough to keep this within a field goal on the road.

On the total. New England is missing two starting linebackers (Jones, Hutchins), which could let Trevor Lawrence and Jacksonville's offense operate more freely than in recent weeks and push the total past 46 if the Patriots' front seven can't compensate.

Spread. Both teams were playoff-caliber in 2025 (14-3 Patriots, 13-4 Jaguars) and the number has sat in a tight -2.5/-3 band all week, so the market has largely settled on a coin-flip-plus-a-field-goal game. The incremental tilt is health: New England is without WR A.J. Brown (high ankle sprain, IR, out to at least Week 6) and OG Mike Onwenu, and is also missing both starting off-ball linebackers this week (Dre'Mont Jones, shoulder; Quintayvious Hutchins, knee), while Jacksonville is close to full health. Drake Maye without his top target and two starting front-seven pieces is a real, if modest, downgrade for New England on both sides of the ball, and it lines up with the market sitting Jacksonville favorites at home rather than moving toward the team with the better 2025 record. That's a legitimate but soft edge already substantially reflected in the number, so I'd lean the home side rather than bet it.

Total. Both teams have shown a low-scoring, defense-forward identity recently, New England's Week 2 win over Pittsburgh finished 20-3 with no passing touchdowns, and Jacksonville's loss to Denver was a similar 20-13, and New England enters this game further stripped of scoring firepower with A.J. Brown on IR and Mike Onwenu out, thinning both the passing game and the run-blocking. Weather is a mild, not decisive, factor (warm, calm, small second-half shower chance). The total has held in a stable 45-46 band all week rather than climbing, which is consistent with the market already expecting a grind-it-out game between two good defenses rather than a shootout. The counter-case, New England's defensive absences (two starting linebackers out) opening room for Jacksonville's offense, is real but not enough on its own to expect the total to spike past this range.

More key facts
  • A.J. Brown (high ankle sprain) on IR, Mike Onwenu also out, thinning New England's offense
  • Total has held in a stable 45-46 range across major books through the week

The call, written up

On the spread

New England Patriots at Jacksonville Jaguars, Jaguars -2.5. The line opened near Jacksonville -1.5 and moved to a -2.5/-3 consensus this week. The move tracks confirmed injury news: New England already has wide receiver A.J. Brown (placed on injured reserve September 12) and guard Mike Onwenu (September 22) out, and Friday's report added both starting edge rushers, Dre'Mont Jones and rookie Quintayvious Hutchins, while cornerback Carlton Davis III returns with no game designation. Jacksonville's only notable absence is rookie defensive tackle Albert Regis, doubtful. The strongest case against laying the number is that New England is 2-0 both straight up and against the spread with a defense that has allowed little scoring, and Davis's return steadies a secondary that could still keep this inside a field goal. Take Jacksonville Jaguars -2.5 at -110 (BetMGM).

On the total

Under 45.5. The total has held in a tight 45-45.5 band across books all week, with draftkings and fanduel at 45.5 and betmgm at 45. New England is missing A.J. Brown and Mike Onwenu, both on injured reserve; its Week 2 win over Pittsburgh finished 20-3 with no passing touchdowns, and Jacksonville's loss to Denver was a similar 20-13. Weather is a non-factor, with light wind and no rain expected outdoors at EverBank Stadium. The counter-case is New England's defensive absences opening room for Jacksonville's offense. All three panels take the under at draftkings' 45.5 at -115.
