Seattle Seahawks at Washington Commanders. Lean: Seattle Seahawks -7.5. Lean: Under 40.5.
The call
The panelists
- Washington officially ruled out Daniels, Cosmi, Okonkwo, Luvu and Cross.
- Washington confirmed Marcus Mariota would start against Seattle.
- Darnold cleared to return; Love and Okada ruled out; Pili questionable.
On the spread. Mariota can exploit replacement safeties, while wind and Seattle’s unsettled right guard reduce separation. A Seattle win by seven is an entirely credible losing outcome. If Pili also misses, Washington’s rushing route to a competitive game improves; the lean does not assume he plays.
On the total. Darnold and Seattle’s receivers can punish Washington’s depleted defense, while Mariota can challenge Seattle’s replacement safeties. Less wind than forecast, defensive scores, or short fields could produce an over without sustained offensive efficiency. Pili being unavailable would further weaken the under.

Spread. The strongest explanation for Seattle laying more than a touchdown is the quarterback divergence: Darnold returns while Washington starts Mariota without Cosmi and Okonkwo. Washington also loses Luvu and Cross. Those confirmed absences explain much of the move; they are not undiscovered advantages. That relative discount supports a LOW lean. Our calibrated Seattle -10.1 provides little independent confirmation: its ATS record is poor, its calibration amplifies favorites, and its projected Washington quarterback is wrong. Seattle’s defense has prevented explosive plays through two games, but losing Love and Okada weakens that evidence going forward. Mariota’s willingness to attack downfield creates a credible backdoor route. Seattle also has a replacement right-guard rotation, and forecast wind could compress the scoring margin. I would accept -7.5/-110 as a lean, but those offsets prevent a normal-unit bet or chasing the consensus.
Total. The strongest explanation for 40 to 40.5 is Washington’s quarterback downgrade against Seattle’s defense, compounded by offensive absences and deteriorating weather. The latest NWS hourly forecast adds specific under support: sustained 18 mph northwest wind with 30 mph gusts during the game. Our 46.66 becomes 45.46 after the required 1.2-point bias correction, but still contains zero wind and quarterback-disruption adjustments; its apparent over edge is overstated. The over case remains substantial: Darnold returns against a vulnerable Washington secondary, both teams lack safeties, and Mariota attacks downfield. Short fields could also bypass weather-related offensive difficulty. I lean under 40.5/-115, but the already-reduced total and defensive absences prevent a normal-unit bet. I would not accept under 40 at the captured prices.
Where our number looks wrong. The projected-QB field still identifies Daniels despite confirmed Mariota availability. The model also misses Seattle’s safety losses and Bradford’s absence. Its calibration expands an approximately 5.8-point raw Seattle margin into a 10.1-point spread without demonstrated ATS benefit. Unchanged head coaches also obscure new offensive coordinators Brian Fleury and David Blough. I would not treat -10.1 as a reliable fair price.
- Bradford’s injured-reserve placement leaves Haynes and Stephens rotating at right guard.
- Seattle named Brian Fleury offensive coordinator after Klint Kubiak’s departure.
- Washington named David Blough offensive coordinator.
- Hourly forecast shows 17°C, northwest wind 18 mph and gusts 30 mph at 13:00 EDT; precipitation probability 44%, rising to 64% at 14:00.
- Seattle had allowed no 20-yard plays through two games; Mariota’s downfield attempt rate was 44.4% since the start of last season.
- Washington’s preview identifies explosive-pass vulnerability and Prescott’s four-touchdown, 83.9%-completion performance.
- Darnold returns, but Seattle will be without safeties Love and Okada.
- Darnold cleared with no status; Love and Okada out; Pili questionable
- Daniels, Cosmi, Cross, Luvu and Okonkwo out; Mariota to start
- Line opened Seahawks -5.5 and moved on the Darnold news; Lock efficient in relief
On the spread. Road favorites of more than a touchdown in rain and 13-14 mph wind cover less often, Mariota is a mobile veteran who can exploit two backup safeties, and a Washington home opener crowd and a full week of first-team Mariota reps could keep it to a one-score game.
On the total. If Darnold and a healthy Seattle run game post 28 against a depleted Washington defense and Mariota adds two scores against backup safeties, 40.5 goes over without much help.

Spread. That move is justified: the defending champions get their starter back (Drew Lock was already efficient in relief), while Washington is also without G Sam Cosmi, S Nick Cross, LB Frankie Luvu and TE Chig Okonkwo. The Seattle-side cost is losing both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada, which gives Mariota some room. At -7.5 I lean Seattle; at -8.5 or worse I would not.
Total. The total has fallen from 46.5 to 40-40.5 on the backup-QB story. Darnold's return removes part of that story for Seattle, and Washington's defense is missing Luvu and Cross while Seattle is down both starting safeties, so both offenses face weakened defenses; our model says 46.7 (about 45.5 after its bias). Against that, Mariota is a clear downgrade, and the forecast calls for 13-14 mph wind with a 43-64 percent chance of light rain, which trims deep passing and kicking. The market move and the weather roughly cancel the over argument at 40-40.5, and I have no real view.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating treats Washington as a Jayden Daniels team; with Mariota starting and five players out it is probably a touch too generous to Washington, though our -10.1 already sits beyond the market.
- Landover forecast: 64F, NW 14 mph, 43% light rain
- Northwest Stadium forecast 64F, NW 14 mph, 43% light rain
- Seahawks-Commanders light rain with winds up to 13 mph
- Jayden Daniels is out indefinitely with a dislocated elbow; Marcus Mariota starts for Washington
- Mariota threw for just 111 yards on 11-of-16 passing in relief last week; spread moved from -5.5 to as high as -9.5
On the spread. Mariota is a experienced veteran (not a rookie or practice-squad arm) who can extend plays with his legs, and double-digit home-underdog spots like this sometimes see backdoor cover value if Seattle empties the bench with a big lead; the market has also already moved a full field goal or more this week, raising the risk of being late to a number that has largely corrected.
On the total. Mariota's mobility can produce chunk scrambling plays and keep drives alive in ways a simple yards/attempt figure misses, and if Seattle's offense controls the ball in a blowout, running clock could just as easily suppress Seattle's own scoring below expectations in either direction, adding variance rather than a clean under case.

Spread. This is one of the largest line moves of the week (Seahawks -5.5 to -7.5/-9.5, total 46.5 down to 40/40.5) and it is fully explained: Jayden Daniels (dislocated left elbow) is out indefinitely, Marcus Mariota starts in his place, and Seattle's defense has been elite through two weeks. Mariota's first spot start last week produced only 111 yards on 11-of-16 passing in relief, a real, dated data point confirming the offense's downgrade rather than a generic backup-QB narrative. Consensus among beat writers and bettors already sides with Seattle covering. Given the size of the move and how thoroughly the news has been digested by the market and by outside analysts, I'd lean Seattle rather than call it a fresh edge, the number already reflects almost everything I can verify.
Total. The total has fallen 6 points (46.5 to 40/40.5) on two confirmed, dated facts: Seattle's defense has been elite through two weeks, and Washington now starts Marcus Mariota, who managed just 111 yards in relief last week. A backup QB averaging under 7 yards/attempt against a top defense, combined with Seattle's own offense facing a Washington defense that is not the story of this game, points toward the kind of 27-13-style final multiple outside analysts are already projecting. The drop has been large but proportionate to the news, and light-rain chances add a small additional under tailwind. This isn't a strong-conviction number because the total has already moved substantially and a Seattle running clock/backup-Mariota scramble drives could still produce more points than a purely pass-efficiency model would suggest.
- Total dropped from an opening 46.5 to a current 40/40.5
- Marcus Mariota threw for just 111 yards on 11-of-16 passing in relief of Daniels last week
The call, written up
Seattle Seahawks at Washington Commanders, Seahawks -7.5. The line opened near Seattle -3.5/-5.5 and moved to a -7.5/-9.5 range this week after Jayden Daniels, with a dislocated left elbow, was ruled out indefinitely and Marcus Mariota was named the starter; Washington's Friday report also lists guard Sam Cosmi, safety Nick Cross, linebacker Frankie Luvu and tight end Chig Okonkwo out. Seattle gets Sam Darnold back after two full practices with no game designation, but is missing both starting safeties, Julian Love and Ty Okada. The strongest case against laying more than a touchdown is that Mariota is a mobile veteran who can exploit Seattle's own missing safeties, and double-digit road favorites cover less often in wind and rain than the talent gap implies. Take Seattle Seahawks -7.5 at -110 (FanDuel).
Under 40.5. The total has fallen six points, from an opening 46.5 to 40-40.5, after Mariota managed just 111 yards on 11 of 16 passing in relief last week and Seattle's defense allowed no play of 20-plus yards through two games. The September 26 National Weather Service forecast adds northwest wind of 18 mph with gusts to 30 mph for the Sunday kickoff. Our own total, 46.66 against a 40.3 market, disagrees sharply but that gap is judged noise for this league. The dissenting case is that Darnold's return and both teams' missing safeties open room for either offense to still reach the number. Take Under 40.5 at -115 (FanDuel).

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
