Keys to the game
  • Mayfield is expected to miss at least three games and Daniels will start.
  • Official Wednesday practice report lists Tampa and Green Bay absences and limitations.
  • The Packers entered 1-2, with a road game at Tampa scheduled for 2026-10-04.
What beats it

On the spread. Daniels struggles in his first start, or Irving and Godwin cannot provide enough support, allowing Love's explosive receivers to turn Tampa's defensive lapses into a multi-score Green Bay win.

On the total. Daniels is inefficient in his debut, Godwin or Irving is unavailable or limited, and Tampa's strong run defense creates short Green Bay possessions, producing the low-scoring game the market move anticipates.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market-first: Green Bay moved from about minus 1.5 to minus 3.5 after Baker Mayfield's thumb injury made undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels the starter, while Tampa is 0-3 and Green Bay retains the more proven passing offense. That explanation is substantial and is already in the captured price. The remaining case for Tampa is matchup-specific: its defense is second in rushing yards allowed, Green Bay has the league's least productive rushing attack, Josh Jacobs is absent, and Love has faced recurring pressure behind a depleted line. Tampa also can lean on Bucky Irving against a Packers run defense ranked 28th. I lean to the home dog at the key hook, but Daniels' first start and Tampa's unsettled skill and front-seven availability prevent a wager.

Total.Market-first: the total crashed from 47.5 to 38.5 as Mayfield was ruled out, Daniels was elevated to his first start, and Green Bay's rushing and offensive-line injuries became clear. That is a coherent under move, but 38.5 now embeds a severe offensive downgrade. The over lean rests on evidence beyond the ratings: Love has six touchdown passes and Green Bay's defense just allowed 35 points and ranks third-worst in points allowed. Tampa's defense has good yardage measures but has allowed damaging explosive plays, while its run game can keep a mobile rookie out of obvious passing situations. Calm, hot kickoff conditions do not reinforce the under. The totals model's 48.15 output is supportive but is not decisive because its holdout performance trails the market.

Where our number looks wrong. The model makes Tampa a 1.5-point favorite despite Mayfield being out and a rookie making his first start. Its preseason-heavy rating does not incorporate the quarterback change or the full injury picture, so its five-point disagreement is not a standalone edge.

Keys to the game
  • Mayfield dislocated right thumb, out a minimum of three weeks; Jalon Daniels to start Week 4
  • Packers Banks and Monk DNP; Tomlinson and Zeitler signed; Jayden Reed to IR
  • Bucs Bain, Diaby, Nunez-Roches, Godwin DNP; McMillan knee out six to eight weeks
What beats it

On the spread. A first career start by an undrafted rookie behind a banged up receiver room (Godwin DNP, McMillan on IR) can produce turnovers and short fields, and Tampa's pass rush may be without Bain, Diaby and Nunez-Roches, which lets Love operate even behind a patched line. Green Bay also has 10 days of rest after a Thursday game. If Tampa's front is ruled out Friday, the fair number may be 4 or more.

On the total. Daniels went 0 for 3 with an interception in relief, Tampa is without Godwin and McMillan, and Green Bay's offense has scored 22, 20 in overtime and 14 with no run game and two emergency guards. A slow, clock heavy game with a short passing script and a possible thunderstorm delay could land in the low 30s.

Read Stack's full case

Spread.Market first: Green Bay moved from 1.5 to 3.5 almost entirely on Baker Mayfield's dislocated right thumb, with undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels named the starter. That is the right direction, but a two point move for the QB swap is modest because Mayfield was playing badly (league worst EPA per dropback among qualifiers per NFL.com), so the downgrade to Daniels is smaller than the name suggests. Our raw number (Tampa minus 1.5) is stale because it cannot see the QB change; adjusting it for the swap lands near Green Bay minus 3, so the model and the market roughly agree and the hook is the only real value. The case for Tampa at plus 3.5: Green Bay is 1-2 and 0-3 against the spread, allowed 39 and 35 points in its two losses, has the league's weakest run game, and will start two emergency veteran guards (Tomlinson, Zeitler) signed this week after Banks and Monk missed Wednesday. Tampa's pass rush is depleted too (Bain, Diaby, Nunez-Roches DNP), which is why this is a lean and not a bet.

Total. The under case is real: a debuting rookie QB, Green Bay's last ranked run game, and new guards. But the drop looks larger than the QB swap alone justifies. Neither defense is stopping anyone: Tampa allows 26.3 points per game and has lost its top edge rushers for practice this week, while Green Bay allowed 39 and 35 in its losses with its own DL banged up. Both teams have gone over in two of three games. Our model says 48, and even after taking off its known 1.2 point high bias and much of the QB drag, a fair number sits around 41.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating makes Tampa a 1.5 point favorite because it only learns from final margins and has no injury input beyond the projected QB flag, which still lists Baker Mayfield. With Mayfield out and a debuting undrafted rookie in, the model's number overstates Tampa by several points; the 5 point gap to the market is mostly this stale QB input, not an edge.

Keys to the game
  • Mayfield dislocated right thumb, out minimum 3 weeks; undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels starts (0 for 3 with an interception in relief vs MIN); no other QB on the 53, Easton Stick could be elevated
  • Packers -3.5, total 39.5 in SI preview; Green Bay 0-3 against the spread this season and 0-3 as a favorite; Love completing 52.4 percent; Banks and Campbell questionable
  • Forecast showers and high near 91F in Tampa for kickoff
What beats it

On the spread. Green Bay is 0-3 against the spread, Love is struggling, and the guards Banks and Monk are out or doubtful; a low-possession game with a rookie can stay inside a field goal. A number at 3.5 also sits on a key number, and Bowles defenses at home have kept games close.

On the total. Under: a rookie offense and stalled Packers drives keep it low. Over: the move overshot and defensive touchdowns or turnovers give short fields.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for Green Bay -3.5 is the quarterback swap: Mayfield is out at least three weeks with a dislocated thumb and an undrafted rookie who threw three incompletions and an interception in relief starts at home. Tampa has no real backup behind Daniels. Green Bay is 0-3 against the spread and Love is inefficient, and two guards are DNP, so this is a lean, not a bet. I would not pay beyond 3.5.

Total.Case for the under: a rookie first start, a Packers offense at 52.4 percent completions, heat and showers, and two Green Bay guards missing. Case for the over: the market may have overcorrected from 46 to 38.5, and Green Bay defensive scoring or short fields off turnovers from a rookie can add points. With the sharpest book barely moving I cannot separate these, so this is a genuine coin flip.

On the spread

Green Bay at Tampa Bay, Green Bay -3.5. The spread opened Green Bay -1.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel and moved to 3.5 after Baker Mayfield dislocated his right thumb. NFL.com reported on 9/28 that he is out at least three weeks and undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels makes his first start. Green Bay is 1-2 and 0-3 against the spread, allowed 39 and 35 points in its losses, and averages 48.7 rushing yards per game per Buccaneers.com on 9/30, against a Tampa run defense second in rushing yards allowed. Packers guards Aaron Banks and Jacob Monk did not practice Wednesday. Our model makes Tampa a 1.5-point favorite, but it cannot see the quarterback change, so that gap is stale, not an edge. The counter-case from one panel: a rookie's first start with Chris Godwin Jr. not practicing is worth more than a two point move, and Tampa edge rushers Bain and Diaby also sat Wednesday. Take Tampa Bay +3.5 at -108 at DraftKings.

On the total

Over 38.5. The NWS forecast on 9/30 calls for near 90 degrees, wind about 8 mph and storms mainly after 2pm. The counter-case: a rookie debut and no Green Bay run game could keep this low.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
