Keys to the game
  • Official Wednesday report lists Gonzalez, Davis and Prunty as DNP, plus Barmore, Jones and Woodson as limited.
  • Official Wednesday report lists Bowers and Powers-Johnson as limited and Jeanty as full.
  • Raiders were 3-1 and had scored at least 26 points in each of four games.
What beats it

On the spread. If Gonzalez, Davis and Barmore improve materially after Wednesday and the Raiders’ limited Bowers and interior line remain compromised, New England’s defense can control the matchup and the move toward Patriots minus 4 is correctly priced.

On the total. The under is live if New England’s low-scoring offense remains short-handed and the Raiders’ limited tight end and interior line reduce their efficiency, while the market’s increase has already captured the defensive injury news.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market-first, New England laying 3.5 to 4 reflects respect for its road win at Buffalo, Drake Maye’s recent form and a Raiders defense allowing 134.5 rushing yards per game. Still, the Wednesday report creates a tangible matchup concern the number may not fully absorb: New England had three cornerbacks, including Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis, out of practice, while Barmore and several other defenders were limited. Las Vegas has scored at least 26 points in all four games. Raiders plus 4 retains a useful key number and is the only captured spread I would accept, but the late-week availability picture keeps this a lean rather than a bet. Our model’s Patriots minus 6.1 is context only, not validation.

Total.Market-first, 45 balances a Raiders offense scoring 28.8 points per game against a Patriots offense scoring 16.3, with the total already bid up at DraftKings and FanDuel from earlier lower opens. The over case is that Las Vegas has cleared 26 points in every game and New England’s thin secondary could materially help that production. The under case is equally credible: New England is 30th in scoring, Mack Hollins did not practice, Rhamondre Stevenson was limited, and Bowers plus three Raiders interior linemen were limited. The kickoff forecast is mild with no obvious weather restriction. Over 45 at BetMGM is a small directional lean because the defensive availability imbalance is more incremental than the offenses’ already public scoring profiles, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. The model likely overstates New England by carrying too much of its 2025 prior and cannot price the current Patriots secondary attrition.

Keys to the game
  • Raiders 3-1 at 28.8 points per game, Patriots 2-2 at 16.3; Raiders scored at least 26 in every game
  • Wednesday report: Gonzalez, Davis, Prunty DNP; Bowers, Powers-Johnson limited; Maye full
  • Three Patriots cornerbacks unavailable; Kindle Vildor elevated from practice squad; Vrabel indicated Stevenson may still play
What beats it

On the spread. Gonzalez already missed Week 4 and the Patriots still won at Buffalo, and their defense ranks near the top in points allowed. The Raiders gave up nearly 400 yards to Kansas City and lost the turnover battle by two; four games is a small sample. If Davis and Gonzalez both clear by Friday, the cornerback edge mostly disappears, and if Bowers is limited the Raiders' passing game thins out. A Maye who is healthy after a three touchdown game can win by a touchdown at home.

On the total. New England's offense has scored 16.3 per game and its defense ranks among the better units in points allowed; if the corners return Friday the Raiders' passing edge fades and a 24 to 17 type game lands under 45. Our adjusted model also sits a touch under the number.

Spread. That is the preseason picture: a 14-3 Patriots team with Drake Maye against a 3-14 Raiders team. Our number of New England minus 6.1 is the same prior, only stronger, because the rating learns slowly and still carries 2025. Four weeks of 2026 say otherwise. The Raiders are 3-1, scoring 28.8 a game and at least 26 in every game, with the only loss 30-27 to Kansas City. The Patriots are 2-2, scoring 16.3 a game, and needed a late touchdown to win 29-26 at Buffalo. The fresh news cuts toward Las Vegas: New England's cornerback room is gutted, with Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis and Karon Prunty all absent Wednesday and a practice squad corner elevated, facing Kirk Cousins with Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer. Taking the hook at 3.5 with the better 2026 team is a bet at standard strength.

Total. The market sits at 44.5 to 45.5 and has crept up from openers of 43.5 to 44.5 at FanDuel and DraftKings. Under case: New England scores 16.3 a game and allows 19.3, and season averages blend to roughly 43. Our model reads 44.4, and after its known 1.2 point high bias it sits near 43, slightly under. Over case: the Raiders have hit 26 or more every week and now face a Patriots secondary missing Gonzalez and Davis, while Las Vegas allowed 30 to Kansas City and the Patriots just scored 29 at Buffalo with Maye healthy. The injury news is the incremental information, and it points up, which matches the line drift. I lean over at a captured 45 but not enough to bet against a home offense that has been weak for most of the season.

Where our number looks wrong. Our minus 6.1 is driven by the 2025 records (Patriots plus 10 per game, Raiders minus 11.2 per game) and does not see the Raiders' coaching and quarterback overhaul beyond the flags; four games of evidence show Las Vegas as the stronger offense, and the rating cannot see the Patriots' cornerback injuries at all. It overrates New England here.

More key facts

  • Patriots beat Bills 29-26 in Buffalo

  • Game listing shows a conflicting NE -8.5 and total 44.5 that does not match captured quotes
What beats it

On the total. The under case is the weak Raiders offense; the over case is that depleted New England corners and a Cousins-led passing game could produce garbage-time scoring in a game the Patriots control.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for New England laying 3.5 to 4 is simple: home field worth about two points, a 14-3 team last year with Drake Maye practicing fully on the injury report, against a Raiders team that went 3-14 with a new coach and Kirk Cousins at quarterback. I found no dated source this week that shows the market missing an injury, a weather factor or a quarterback change. The one web line I saw at -8.5 conflicts with every captured quote and looks stale or mislabeled, so I treat it as noise. The Raiders at +4 is the least bad side by a hair, but taking points with no incremental evidence is the generic underdog narrative the rules tell me to pass on. Research was thin and my practice report sources were limited to the database list.

Total. The total sits at 44.5 to 45.5 across books, a normal range for a game with a 3.5 point spread. Raiders offense was the weak side last season at -0.22 EPA per play, which argues for the under, while New England has a returning quarterback and a decent offense, which argues for the over. Weather is mild with no wind concern in what I found, so there is no environmental lean. Offsetting defensive absences for New England (Barmore, two corners listed) push the other way. Both sides of the argument are roughly balanced and I have no incremental evidence beyond the general low-scoring Raiders profile, which is already in the number.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
