Chicago Bears at Atlanta Falcons. Lean: Atlanta Falcons +1.5. Lean: Under 51.5.
The call
The panelists
- Williams was a full participant Friday, remained questionable, and had missed the prior three contests with a right hamstring injury.
- Chicago listed Monangai, Odeyingbo, Edwards and Elliott out. Williams, Gordon and Stevenson were questionable.
- Penix will start with no designation. Henderson is out and Smith is questionable.
On the spread. If Williams starts without limitation, Chicago’s offense gains its preferred quarterback while Atlanta is down Henderson and could also lose Smith, making Atlanta plus 1.5 too thin to support beyond the listed price.
On the total. A fully active Williams, Atlanta’s recently productive offense, Chicago’s missing defensive front players, and an open roof would make the move from the 47.5 opener justified and leave little room beneath 51.5.

Spread. The market’s strongest explanation is Caleb Williams’ uncertain return after three missed games, plus Chicago’s defensive absences, balanced against Atlanta’s earlier uneven form and thin secondary. The adjustment from Bears minus 3 to roughly minus 1 already recognizes much of that, so this is a lean, not a bet. Atlanta has Michael Penix Jr. cleared with no designation, while Williams remains questionable despite full practices. Chicago is also without three front seven contributors, and Atlanta has scored 35 and 45 in its two wins. At home, the Falcons plus 1.5 at FanDuel is the only captured spread worth taking, but the price is expensive and the number is just off the key number of one. The model’s Bears lean is not enough to overcome the verified quarterback and availability context.
Total. The market’s strongest explanation for 51.5 is the expected return of both starting quarterbacks, Atlanta’s recent 35 and 45 point outputs, and Chicago’s defensive absences. It has acted on that explanation, lifting the total from 47.5 to 51.5 or 52. The fresh information removes the earlier case for a depressed number, but the current total now asks for sustained efficiency from a Bears offense that may again change quarterbacks and a Falcons offense missing depth on defense. The locked Under 51.5 remains directionally reasonable, though not strong enough for a new unit.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating treats Chicago as the better side by roughly 2.6 points, but its preseason weighted inputs do not capture Williams missing three games, his still unresolved starter status, or Chicago’s confirmed defensive losses.
- The tracker showed the market at Bears minus 1.5 after opening Bears minus 3.
- Penix had no injury designation, will start, and had completed 67.5% of his passes for 719 yards in three starts.
- Williams was a full participant Friday but remained questionable after missing three contests.
- The Falcons ruled Henderson out, listed Smith questionable, and confirmed Penix as the starter.
- The line movement tracker displayed a move from 47.5 to 51.5.
- Williams questionable after full practices; Monangai, Edwards, Odeyingbo out; Sweat serving two game suspension
- Falcons final report: Penix full, Henderson out, Za'Darius Smith questionable, London limited
- Gordon and Stevenson uncertain; Johnson has not named Bagent or Keenum as fallback
On the spread. If Williams plays at full health, Chicago's offense was the better unit last season (0.073 EPA per play against Atlanta's negative mark) and the line could drift back toward 2 to 2.5 by kickoff, making Bears -1 the better number now. Atlanta is 0-2 at home and Penix is playing through a rib injury that could limit him if hit.
On the total. Indoors with Penix healthy against a Bears front seven missing four rotation players and possibly both starting corners, Atlanta could score freely, and a healthy Williams with Ben Johnson's scheme pushes this into the mid 50s.

Spread. That move ran against good Chicago QB news, which points to informed money on Atlanta rather than a pure Williams discount. The reasons are visible on the report: Montez Sweat is serving a two game PED suspension, Dayo Odeyingbo, T.J. Edwards and Keyshaun Elliott are out, and slot CB Kyler Gordon and CB Tyrique Stevenson are questionable. Williams still carries a questionable tag off a Grade 2 hamstring, and if he sits the fallback is Tyson Bagent, who was benched in the 31-7 loss at Green Bay, or Case Keenum. Atlanta gets Michael Penix Jr. with no designation after a full Friday practice, and Drake London carries no game designation. I lean Atlanta +1.5, not a bet, because the move has already taken most of the value.
Total. The total has climbed from 46.5 to 49.5 openers to 51.5 to 52 as both starting quarterbacks trended toward playing, in a retractable roof stadium. The over case is real: dome conditions, Penix fully cleared, and a Chicago defense missing Sweat, Odeyingbo, Edwards and Elliott with both top corners questionable. The under case is that 52 already prices both quarterbacks at full strength, while Williams still carries a questionable tag off a Grade 2 hamstring and the Bears fallback offense scored 7 at Green Bay. Our model at 48.67, about 47.5 after its known upward bias is removed, agrees in direction but is worse than the market. Net, I hold a thin under lean at 52 and nothing at 51.5 or lower.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating does not see that Chicago's pass rush and linebacker room are depleted (Sweat suspended, Odeyingbo, Edwards and Elliott out) or that Williams is returning from a Grade 2 hamstring with a questionable tag, so Bears -2.6 likely overstates Chicago this week. It also carries Tua Tagovailoa as Atlanta's projected QB while Penix is starting.
- DraftKings had Bears -3 with the line opening Atlanta -1.5 before Week 5; Falcons drew a majority of spread tickets
- Bagent benched for Keenum in 31-7 loss at Green Bay
- Bears injury absences and Williams questionable designation
- Penix cleared with no designation on Falcons final report
- Williams questionable, full practice Wed to Fri, Johnson says on track
- Williams questionable after three days of practice, Bears decision pending
- Bears were three-point road favorites on DraftKings with Penix rib uncertainty
On the spread. If Williams is ruled out Sunday morning the Bears are a clear underdog to a healthy Penix and this loses, with a backup under center after a three-game absence. A returning hamstring tear can also limit mobility and rhythm, and Atlanta's home price of +1.5 at -115 to -120 is not far off.
On the total. Both offenses are healthy at the top, the game is indoors on fast turf, and Atlanta scored heavily with Penix. Bears defensive back injuries could open the passing game, and a late total move on a Williams confirmation would be against the under.

Spread.Market-first: the number moved from Bears -3 early in the week to Bears -1 to -1.5 now, and the best explanation is a blend of two scenarios. If Caleb Williams starts, Chicago is a field-goal favorite on the road; if his hamstring keeps him out, Atlanta is likely a small favorite with Penix healthy. Penix practiced fully all week with no designation, so Atlanta's side is settled. Williams was a full participant Wednesday through Friday and Ben Johnson said he is on track, with a decision due by 11:30 ET Sunday. The skew of that evidence favors him playing, so a price near pick'em for Chicago pays slightly less than the starting scenario deserves. It is a lean, not a bet, because the whole case rests on one unconfirmed availability fact and the line will jump at the inactive list.
Total.Under 51.5 is already locked from the Wednesday run, so this is a recorded fresh read. The total climbed from openers near 47 to 49 up to 51.5 and 52 as both quarterbacks trended toward playing. The over case is real: two healthy starters, a closed roof and fast turf, and a Falcons offense with Penix. The under case is that 51.5 to 52 prices the best scenario for both offenses, while a Williams scratch would drop the total several points and nothing in a Williams-plays world pushes it higher. That asymmetry gives a slight lean to the under at the 51.5 number, but it is thin.
- Williams questionable, on track per Johnson
- Penix practiced fully, no designation

Chicago at Atlanta, Chicago -1.5. The Vegas Insider tracker on Oct. 16 showed the spread moving from Bears -3 to Bears -1.5, even though Caleb Williams was a full participant that day and remains questionable after missing three games with a hamstring injury. The news cuts both ways. On Oct. 16 Chicago ruled out Kyle Monangai, Dayo Odeyingbo, T.J. Edwards and Keyshaun Elliott, while Atlanta's Michael Penix Jr. has no designation, though C.J. Henderson is out and Za'Darius Smith is questionable. Take Atlanta +1.5 at -115 at FanDuel.
Under 51.5. The total climbed from openers of 46.5 to 49.5 up to 50.5 to 51.5 by Oct. 14 as both starting quarterbacks looked on track, at a retractable-roof stadium treated as a dome. The counter-case is a dome, two returning quarterbacks and Atlanta's 80 points in two Penix road wins. The selected number is Under 51.5 at -118 at DraftKings.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call. Where the panel's written case cites a raw number of its own, the calibrated number is the one printed here.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
