Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs. Lean: Kansas City Chiefs -7.5. Lean: Under 42.5.
The call
The panelists
- Final report lists Rice and Simmons out, Sneed questionable, and Mahomes full participation.
- Final report lists Alt, Awosika, James and Jackson out, with McConkey and Johnston full participants.
- Team preview identifies the records as Chargers 0-5 and Chiefs 4-0.
On the spread. Rice and Simmons are meaningful Kansas City absences, Sneed could also sit, and Justin Herbert still has McConkey and Johnston after both finished full Friday participation. If the Chargers protect adequately, 7.5 is too many points for a divisional road favorite.
On the total. Kansas City can create scoring chances against a Chargers secondary without James and Jackson, and Los Angeles' returning receivers give Herbert more functional options than the early-week injury list suggested.

Spread.Market first: Kansas City -7.5 reflects an unbeaten Chiefs team coming off its bye against an 0-5 Chargers club missing both listed starting offensive linemen and Derwin James. The spread has already absorbed that mismatch, holding near 7.5 after trading at 8, while Kansas City also lost Rashee Rice and tackle Josh Simmons. I lean Chiefs at the captured -7.5 because Los Angeles must protect Herbert at Arrowhead without Joe Alt or Kayode Awosika, and its secondary loses James and Donte Jackson. The injury news supports Kansas City, but much of it is plainly priced.
Total.Market first: the four-point fall from the captured 45.5 opener at DraftKings and FanDuel to 41.5 reflects Los Angeles' offensive-line losses, Rice's absence and a low recent scoring expectation. Under remains the directional lean because Herbert faces the Chiefs without Alt and Awosika, while Kansas City is without Rice. But 41.5 already prices the same information, and the under has attracted a large reported share of DraftKings handle. The over case is credible if Mahomes exploits a Chargers defense without James and Jackson, or if short fields offset the line injuries. Our 42.25 model is nearly market and has performed worse than market on holdout, so it adds nothing. This fresh pass does not alter the locked Under 42.5.
Where our number looks wrong. The model's -9.2 leans too heavily toward Kansas City relative to a market that has already repriced Los Angeles' depleted roster. Its 2025 inputs and calibration cannot establish that the remaining 1.6 points are actionable.
- DraftKings splits list Under 41.5 with 90% of handle and the current total at 41.5.
- Line-history context shows 41.5 after earlier higher market numbers.
- Official final injury report lists Chargers offensive-line absences and Friday full participation for McConkey and Johnston.
- Friday report: Rice and Simmons OUT for Kansas City; Alt, Awosika, James, Jackson, Harris OUT and Shelley DOUBTFUL for Los Angeles
- Chargers list five players out, Shelley doubtful, six questionable; McConkey, Johnston, Mack off the report
- Chargers 0-5, 0-4-1 ATS; Chiefs 4-0 off bye; DraftKings Chiefs 8.5 earlier in week; Slater on IR
On the spread. The move from 8.5 to 7.5 came while the Chargers injuries were already public, which suggests informed money on the dog. Large division underdogs get backdoor chances, the Chargers run defense ranks well, and Kansas City is down its top receiver and its left tackle. Andy Reid teams are 8-11 ATS after a bye in the cited sample, and a low total makes a 7.5 point margin harder to clear.
On the total. The under steam may not be finished, since the Chargers offense has failed to move the ball behind backup tackles and Kansas City is missing Rice and its left tackle. Alternatively, Kansas City alone can get close to the total if the Chargers secondary is as thin as the report suggests.

Spread. The best explanation for that drift is a buy-low on a winless division dog with a strong run defense and a Chargers under profile that shortens games. Our number is Chiefs by 9.2, a gap of 1.6 that our own map calls a pass. The news adds to the Chiefs case: the Friday report rules out Joe Alt and Kayode Awosika on a line already missing Rashawn Slater on IR, after Herbert was sacked five times against Denver, and the secondary loses Derwin James, Donte Jackson and likely Rodney Shelley against a rested Mahomes. Kansas City is without Rashee Rice and left tackle Josh Simmons, which trims the edge.
Total. The total has fallen from 45.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel to 41.5, so the market has already priced the Chargers offense ranking last in EPA per play, its battered line and a 4-1 under record. Our model says 42.25, which is about 41 after its known upward bias, right on the number. The under case is pass protection and Herbert turnovers stalling drives. The over case is that Kansas City has scored at least 24 in every game and now faces a secondary without James, Jackson and likely Shelley, while Chargers turnovers create short fields. After a four point drop, those cases offset. The panel already locked Under 42.5; at 41.5 I hold no fresh view.
Where our number looks wrong. Our rating carries the Chargers at only minus 2 with a 2025 base of 11-6, which understates how damaged the current roster is: both starting tackles and three starting defensive backs are out.
- Herbert sacked five times in 23-17 loss to Denver; Harbaugh says team is in the fight together amid 0-5 start
- DraftKings total 42.5 earlier in the week; Chargers games 4-1 under; Chargers offense 32nd in EPA per play
- Chargers secondary losses on Friday report
- Rice and Simmons ruled out for KC; Peter Woods no designation
- Alt, Awosika, Harris, Jackson, James did not practice Wednesday or Thursday
On the spread. Chargers lose five starters across the line and secondary while Kansas City comes off a bye, so a rested home favorite can cover comfortably if Herbert is pressured.
On the total. A rested Mahomes plus Chargers turnovers can reach a 24 to 20 type score, and the market already took four points off.

Spread.Market-first: Kansas City laying 7.5 to 8 at home, off a bye with 14 days rest in a division game, is the market's explanation: rest, Mahomes at Arrowhead, and a banged-up Chargers roster. The Chargers are missing right tackle Joe Alt (neck, second straight game), guard Kayode Awosika, receiver Tre Harris, cornerback Donte Jackson and safety Derwin James, which is a lot of priced-in absence. Kansas City is without receiver Rashee Rice and tackle Josh Simmons, both out.
Total. The total fell from 43.5 to 45.5 at open to 41.5 now, so the market has already moved a lot toward the under. A Chargers offense without Alt, Awosika and Harris against a Chiefs defense off a bye argues for fewer possessions, and Kansas City is also missing Rice. The counter is that Mahomes with rest and short fields from turnovers can push Kansas City past 24. The earlier lock was Under 42.5, which is now 1 point better than the market, so the lock sits well. At 41.5 the value is thinner, so this is a lean.
- Rice out, Simmons out for KC
The call, written up
Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City -7.5. The final Week 6 reports on October 16 rule out Chargers tackle Joe Alt, guard Kayode Awosika, safety Derwin James and cornerback Donte Jackson, and Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice and tackle Josh Simmons. Los Angeles entered the week 0-5 and Kansas City 4-0 (October 14). The counter-case from the third panel: a touchdown-plus division spread is a lot of points, and the Chiefs lose Rice and Simmons.
Under 42.5. The total opened at 45.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel and 43.5 at the other captured books, and now sits at 42.5 at all five. Ace and Stack both lean under, citing the Chargers offensive line and receiver problems and a Chargers defense that is strong, while Buck has no view. The counter-case is that Kansas City has scored at least 24 in each of its four games and Chargers turnovers can hand it short fields. Neither lean is a bet. The selected number is Under 42.5 at -110 at BetMGM, captured October 14.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call. Where the panel's written case cites a raw number of its own, the calibrated number is the one printed here.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 1,087 held out games it missed the combined score by 10.46 points on average and the closing total missed by 10.189, ahead of us in all 4 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
