Keys to the game
  • New England's final Wednesday report listed Vera-Tucker, Ben Brown, Davis, Prunty and Canada out, with Moses, Byard, Elliss and Woodson questionable.
  • Chicago's final report listed Edwards doubtful, Stevenson questionable, and Monangai and Sanborn out.
  • DraftKings displayed Bears minus 3 at minus 102 and reported the Patriots attracting the greater share of spread tickets and handle.
What beats it

On the spread. The market already moved two points toward Chicago, Williams is returning from a recent hamstring issue, and Edwards' likely absence weakens the Bears defense against Drake Maye, A.J. Brown and a Patriots offense that has recently improved.

On the total. Williams is clear of the injury report, Maye and A.J. Brown were full participants, and New England will be without three cornerbacks, all of which can create efficient scoring and short fields.

Read Ace's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for Bears minus 3 is that Chicago has Caleb Williams back without an injury designation, while New England will be without both starting interior linemen, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown, plus three cornerbacks. The market moved Chicago from minus 1.5 at DraftKings to minus 3 before the final report, so much of that personnel difference is already priced. Still, the confirmed Patriots absences are concentrated in places Chicago can exploit, and minus 3 at near even money preserves the key number. Our model makes Chicago only minus 0.4, but it has no demonstrated ATS edge and does not incorporate this week’s roster news. Bears minus 3 is a lean, not a bet, because T.J. Edwards is doubtful, Tyrique Stevenson is questionable, and New England has several important players active or trending upward.

Total. The strongest explanation for 50.5 is the return of Williams, a recent productive Patriots offense, favorable throwing weather, and New England's depleted secondary. The move from 48.5 to 50.5 at DraftKings has already charged a premium for that story. Under 50.5 is the better remaining side because the Patriots are now confirmed without both starting interior linemen, a short-week constraint that can interrupt drives, while the absence of weather friction is fully reflected in this elevated number. Our 45.5 total is only a supporting input because its out of sample error trails the market. The total is a lean rather than a bet: Chicago's offense with Williams healthy and New England's cornerback absences create a clear route to a higher-scoring game.

Where our number looks wrong. Its near pickem rating is too favorable to New England if the loss of both interior starters and three cornerbacks is material. The model cannot price those current roster absences, but its historical ATS record also gives no basis to override a market that already moved toward Chicago.

More key facts
  • The official Wednesday report ruled out Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown, listed Maye and Brown as full participants without game statuses, and confirmed Chicago's final designations.
  • DraftKings displayed a 50.5 total, with the over at minus 115 and under at minus 105.
  • Kickoff forecast showed clear skies, 58 degrees, 5 mph crosswind and no rain.

  • ESPN: Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown ruled out against the Bears
  • Jonah Jackson (hip) left Week 6 early; Monangai expected to miss a third game; Patriots signed two offensive linemen Monday
What beats it

On the spread. New England has won three straight under Drake Maye, including a road win at Buffalo as a 7 point underdog, and our rating still rates them the stronger team. BetMGM's analyst argues Chicago's defensive numbers are padded by a soft schedule and that Atlanta handed them 10 points on special teams turnovers in Week 6.

On the total. The market moved up, not down, through the injury news, which suggests the sharper money sees the thin New England secondary as the bigger story. Williams against backup corners and A.J. Brown back for Maye could produce a shootout, and calm, mild weather removes the usual late October suppressor. Short week games can also turn sloppy in ways that create short fields and cheap scores.

Spread.Market first: Chicago opened as short as 1.5 at DraftKings and 2.5 at FanDuel and settled at 3 everywhere once New England's line injuries from the Jets game became clear. That move is the market pricing a real downgrade: both starting guards, Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown, are ruled out, Walter Rouse and Matt Pryor start in their place, and right tackle Morgan Moses is questionable after limited practices all week. Romeo Doubs is on injured reserve and three corners, including starter Carlton Davis III, are out. On a four day turnaround that is a lot of patchwork against a blitz heavy Chicago front that posted five sacks in Week 6. Our number sits at Chicago 0.4, but the rating cannot see any of this and still leans on New England's 14-3 season of 2025. Chicago's own concerns are milder: Kyle Monangai and Jack Sanborn out, T.J. Edwards doubtful or questionable, Jonah Jackson cleared. I lean Chicago at 3 at the cheap minus 102 quotes, but the key number and New England's three game win streak keep it a lean, not a bet.

Total.Market first: 50.5 is a high number driven by two offenses with good quarterback form and a total that climbed from 48.5 to 50.5 since open. The over case is real: New England is missing three corners, including starter Carlton Davis III, so Caleb Williams should find targets, and the forecast is benign with light wind and temperatures near 51. The under case is stronger to me: New England plays two backup guards and possibly a backup right tackle against a blitz heavy front on a short week, which invites drive killing sacks; Chicago is without Monangai; and both teams' games have gone under four times in six. Our model sits at 45.5, about 44.3 after its known upward bias, though part of that is shrinkage against a high market number. I lean under at 50.5, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating makes New England the better team on 2025 form and prices Chicago only 0.4, but it learns only from final margins and cannot see that New England arrives without both starting guards, a starting corner, two reserve corners and Doubs, with its right tackle questionable on a short week. The 2.6 point gap to the market is mostly explained by that injury news, which the market priced as the line moved from 1.5 to 3.

  • Patriots injury report: both starting guards and three corners out, Moses questionable
  • Covers early lean on Under 50.5 citing Chicago's pass rush against a banged up New England line

Keys to the game
  • Preview lists Williams back from hamstring, injury lists for both teams, Bears 4-2 ATS, Patriots 3-2-1 ATS
  • Short week and Jonah Jackson hip concern noted for Bears
What beats it

On the spread. New England was the stronger 2025 team by point differential and Maye is practicing fully. If the line absences are partly replaced by capable backups and Chicago's own thin spots at running back and linebacker matter, the visitor getting 3 on the key number is the better side. A Bears win by exactly 3 pushes.

On the total. Thin New England secondary against a rested passing attack could produce a quick scoring game, Over is 2-1 in Williams starts, and the market move up is real money. Wind is the only verified lever for unders and I did not find a forecast.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The market has Chicago at 3 at home, which reads as roughly a pure home field adjustment on a near even pair, with New England's stronger 2025 body of work offset by Caleb Williams being back after a three game hamstring absence and having thrown for 305 yards in Week 6. The news since the open leans Chicago: our injury scan lists New England's interior line badly thinned (Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown out, Moses questionable, Onwenu on IR) and three cornerbacks (Canada, Davis, Prunty) out, against a Bears list whose main absences are RB Monangai and LB Edwards. A short week for both teams hurts the more banged up roster most. Drake Maye (shoulder) practiced fully. I would take Chicago as a lean at the current 3, not a bet: the evidence is a depth and line argument with no verified final designations, and 3 is the key number so the price matters.

Total. The total has risen from 48.5 to 50 at the open to 50.5 everywhere, which prices a high scoring game with Williams back and a 305 yard Week 6. The case for the under is a short week for both teams, a New England line missing two interior starters that should hurt sustained drives and pass protection, and a Chicago backfield without Monangai. The case for the over is that New England is missing three cornerbacks against a Bears passing game that just produced 305 yards. Those roughly offset, so this is a thin lean to the under at the best captured price, not a bet. Weather was not verified, and wind at Soldier Field would add to the under case.

The call, written up

On the spread

New England at Chicago, Chicago Bears -3. The number moved toward the home side: DraftKings opened Chicago -1.5 and FanDuel -2.5, and both now sit at -3 with BetMGM, which opened there. On Oct. 21 the Patriots ruled out guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown and cornerbacks Carlton Davis III, Karon Prunty and Channing Canada, with tackle Morgan Moses questionable. Chicago lists Kyle Monangai and Jack Sanborn out and T.J. Edwards doubtful. The counter-case: DraftKings splits showed most spread tickets and handle on New England, Drake Maye was a full participant, and Caleb Williams is only just back from a hamstring injury. Take Chicago -3 at -102 at BetMGM.

On the total

Under 50.5. The total climbed from 48.5 at DraftKings, 49.5 at FanDuel and 50 elsewhere to 50.5 everywhere. New England is missing both starting guards with Moses questionable, on a short week, which points to stalled drives. The Oct. 21 forecast shows light wind near 5 mph, so weather offers no help. The counter-case: three Patriots cornerbacks out and a healthy Williams give Chicago a route to quick scores.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total are graded at each game's closing line, the last quote before kickoff at DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM. A game we have no capture for is graded at the number the league data carries.
