The short favorite has some explaining to do
USC brings the cleaner offense to Penn State, while Central Michigan meets an Ohio attack that stopped moving.
I am up 2.4 units.
A short home favorite gets treated like a fact when it is often just a receipt for public nerves. I am not paying extra respect for a stadium or a logo. USC and Central Michigan each meet a favorite with a problem that did not vanish because the schedule turned the page. Neither case is flawless. That is why the price is wearing a plus sign.
USC at Penn State
USC is the better outright argument at +102 on DraftKings. The Trojans arrive with 37.3 points and 467.8 yards per game, while Penn State just surrendered 413 rushing yards to Northwestern. That is an ugly place for a favorite to begin against an offense that controls the ball for 33:16 per game. Penn State also loses receiver Koby Howard, and its conference losses showed an attack that can stall when the game asks for answers. I will take USC at this price. The favorite has the setting. USC has the fuller offense.
What beats it: The Wednesday availability report could reveal USC absences or a healthier Penn State roster, and Penn State’s pass defense can force the errors that decide this game.
Central Michigan at Ohio
Central Michigan at +125 on BetMGM is the dog I want pressing Ohio. Central Michigan produced 481 yards against Akron, with 332 on the ground, while Ohio escaped Kent State after gaining only 253 yards and 72 passing yards. An offense that thin does not get my automatic respect as a favorite. Central Michigan can make this a physical game and keep Ohio from hiding behind field position. I will take Central Michigan at this price. Ohio owns the home field, but its last offensive showing was a very small room.
What beats it: Ohio’s unavailable-player report could clear quarterback Vezza, and the homecoming setting plus Central Michigan’s limited passing game could bottle up the rushing attack.
I would stand behind these prices, not a speech about certainty. USC carries the cleaner case. Central Michigan is the sharper nuisance, which is often enough to make a favorite uncomfortable.
