Chiefs, Buccaneers and Browns, each teased across 3

Three six-point legs, each moved across 3, with a football reason under every one of them.

0 and 1 on the cards, down 1.0 units going into this board.

Three legs this week, three different games, and every one of them crosses 3. The Bucs and Chiefs legs cross 7 too. None of them is a side I bet on its own. Each is a side I like at the number, and the teaser gives me room I would not get on the straight spread.

I build a card the way you build a drive. One block at a time, and every block has to hold.

The card

The card is graded at the standard three-team, six-point teaser price of +160. A push on any leg makes the card a loss.

Buccaneers at Panthers

Tampa Bay Buccaneers, +3 moved to +9. Those six points carry this side across both 3 and 7, so a Panthers win by a field goal or by a touchdown no longer hurts me. The football reason is on the ground. Carolina gives up 5.12 yards per carry, worst in the league, and the Buccaneers rank second in stopping the run. A team that can run on you and shut down your run gets to shorten the game, and a shorter game keeps +9 in reach. I will take this leg because it does not ask the Bucs to win. It asks them to stay close.

What beats it: The Tampa Bay quarterback spot. The expected starter is questionable with a thumb injury, has been out since Week 3, and plays with a glove covering the hand he throws with. If his grip is off or the fallback has to start, the passing game can stall. The Bucs also play without their right tackle and their top safety, and Carolina’s passer leads the league in passing yards per game.

Chiefs at Seahawks

Kansas City Chiefs, +3 moved to +9. This is the cleanest use of six points on the card: the Chiefs go through 3 and through 7. Kansas City is first in net yards per play and sits top five on both sides of the ball in EPA and success rate. Seattle’s offense ranks dead last running the ball by EPA and 25th by success rate, and its passer has thrown seven interceptions. I do not need the Chiefs to win in Seattle at night. I need them inside +9, and with this gap in play quality I am on it.

What beats it: Seattle’s pass rush, ranked second in the league in pressure rate on dropbacks, with the defense second at holding offenses down by EPA, teeing off on a Chiefs line that may be down to a backup at left tackle. Josh Simmons, a Chiefs left tackle, is still working back from a back injury, and Jaylon Moore, the starting right tackle, is in concussion protocol. The Seahawks also come in off a long break, with 10 days of rest before a home kickoff, and the Chiefs’ efficiency numbers came against a soft early schedule.

Browns at Titans

Cleveland Browns, -2.5 moved to +3.5. Here the six points turn a road favorite into a road dog and carry it over 3, so a Titans win by a field goal still leaves this leg standing. The case is the Tennessee offense. The Titans put up 14.0 points a game, which ranks 31st, and gain 236.3 yards a game, last in the league at 32nd. Cleveland’s defense gives up 20.3 a game. When one side has this much trouble moving the ball, I want the other side holding the points, and I will take the Browns at +3.5.

What beats it: Calvin Ridley, the Titans’ veteran receiver, getting on the field after two straight missed practices with a hip injury, while Cleveland’s interior defense plays short. Defensive tackles Mike Hall Jr. and Kalia Davis are both out for the Browns. The Titans’ offense found 26 points against the Colts last time out, and Cleveland’s own offense averages only 17.7 a game, so a low scoring game with one late score can swing it.

The Chiefs leg is the one I stand behind first. The Browns leg is the thinnest of the three, because it rests more on the other side’s weakness than on what Cleveland does with the ball. I do not need these to look pretty on Sunday. I need each one to get there.
