Keys to the game
  • Coach-attributed report says Hayes is doubtful and Williams will start again.
  • Williams threw three touchdowns without an interception in Tulsa’s 42-0 victory.
  • Arkansas averaged 2.6 yards per non-sack rushing attempt against Georgia.
What beats it

On the spread. Arkansas’s offensive struggles may primarily reflect its last two opponents. If its size advantage produces a rushing rebound while Williams struggles against stronger opposition, Arkansas can win by multiple scores. My assessment already assumes Hayes does not start.

On the total. Tulsa’s rushing attack could exploit Arkansas’s defense while Arkansas finds offensive relief against a weaker opponent. Explosive runs, short fields and special-teams scores can overcome limited passing efficiency; a healthier-than-expected Hayes strengthens the over case.

Spread. The strongest explanation for Arkansas -7 is opponent quality, home field and Tulsa’s likely quarterback downgrade: Arkansas’s losses came against Utah and Georgia, while Tulsa’s latest win came against FCS opposition. Hayes is doubtful, with Williams expected to start, according to Monday’s coach-attributed report. Our Arkansas -2.8 therefore understates an availability risk it cannot model; the apparent 4.3-point discrepancy is not a demonstrated edge. Nevertheless, Tulsa is my directional preference because Arkansas’s rushing problems extend beyond sacks: Georgia’s recap reports just 45 yards on 17 non-sack carries. Williams also supplied three touchdown passes without an interception last Saturday, giving Tulsa a plausible competitive path without Hayes. The price prevents a bet. Captured DraftKings movement from Arkansas -8.5 to -7 has removed useful points, and FanDuel charges -122 for Tulsa +7.5. I require +7.5 at -110 or better. That protects against a seven-point defeat without paying the captured premium; neither Tulsa’s unbeaten record nor the model gap justifies relaxing that requirement.

Total. The strongest explanation for 50.5 to 51 is Arkansas’s inefficient offense plus Hayes’ likely absence; the captured decline from 52.5 to 53.5 already reflects a less productive game. The under case has substance: Arkansas cannot establish its running game, and Williams completed only 14 of 26 attempts against FCS opposition. The over case is substantial too: Tulsa ran for 286 yards last week, Arkansas just allowed Georgia 254 rushing yards, and Williams generated three passing touchdowns. Favorable evening weather supplies no strong under argument. Our 52.87 projection favors over numerically, but its prior-season weighting and inability to incorporate quarterback changes weaken that signal. I lean under, yet require 53 at -110 rather than chase 50.5 or pay -117 for 51. The pass reflects exhausted price value, not merely unresolved availability.

Where our number looks wrong.Arkansas -2.8 appears too favorable to Tulsa because the rating cannot account for Hayes’ likely absence. Tulsa’s 42-0 win also included a kickoff-return touchdown and came against an FCS opponent. Conversely, Arkansas’s weak rushing execution supports some of the model’s skepticism. I cannot substantiate a precise injury-adjusted fair spread.

More key facts
  • Arkansas’s released depth chart lists KJ Jackson first at quarterback.
  • Tulsa accumulated 286 rushing yards; its 42 points included a 98-yard kickoff return.
  • Georgia produced 254 rushing yards while Arkansas struggled even after excluding sacks.
  • Silverfield described rushing execution errors involving multiple positions.
  • Public odds comparison showed Arkansas -7 and total 50.5, with an opening total of 52.5; context only, not an executable receipt.

Keys to the game
  • Hayes doubtful, Grade 1 knee sprain; Williams 14-26, 164 yds, 3 TD vs East Texas A&M; Howard and Erb expected back
  • Silverfield noncommittal on QB; Arkansas 75.3 rush yds/g last in Power Four; nine drops vs Georgia; Broussard, Shaw, punter injured
  • Arkansas on 12-game FBS losing streak; BetMGM Arkansas -7.5, total 50.5 at time of writing
What beats it

On the spread. Arkansas has played Utah and Georgia. Tulsa has played Oklahoma State, Sam Houston and East Texas A&M, so its 9 points allowed per game is inflated by the schedule. A backup quarterback on the road in the SEC can turn it over, and Arkansas wins by 10 to 14.

On the total. Arkansas's defense has been shredded by FBS offenses. If Williams hits a couple of explosive plays and Arkansas turns it over, the game can get to the mid-50s.

Spread.Market-first: Arkansas -7 is the SEC-brand number against a Group of 5 team starting a backup quarterback. Tulsa QB Baylor Hayes (Grade 1 knee sprain) is doubtful, and graduate transfer Dexter Williams starts again. Even so, the line has dropped toward Tulsa since opening (FanDuel -9.5 and DraftKings -8.5 to -7 and -7.5). That says the market thinks little of Arkansas under first-year coach Ryan Silverfield: a 12-game losing streak against FBS teams, last among Power Four teams in rushing at 75.3 yards per game, nine drops against Georgia, and an unsettled quarterback spot (KJ Jackson or AJ Hill). Tulsa's defense has allowed 9 points per game, and it returns DT Dailen Howard and LG Hunter Erb this week. Williams has Power Four starting experience. My lean is Tulsa, but most of the value was taken during the move from 9.5. At +7, a bad-team favorite covering by exactly 7 or 8 is a real risk. I would bet +7.5 at a normal price, not +7.

Total.Under case: Tulsa is starting its backup quarterback, Tulsa's defense has allowed 9 points per game, and Arkansas has scored 10 and 17 against FBS teams with the worst Power Four ground game and an unsettled quarterback. Over case: Arkansas has allowed 43 and 45 in its FBS games, Williams is mobile and experienced, and our model says 52.9. The market has already moved the total from 52.5-53.5 down to 50.5-51, which prices the Hayes news and Arkansas's offensive problems. My slight lean is under, but the value from the move is gone. It would take 51.5 or higher to bet.

Where our number looks wrong.Arkansas's rating (-4.7) still leans on a 0.8 preseason prior for a program that has lost 12 straight to FBS opponents and can't run the ball. If anything the model is too generous to Arkansas. Tulsa's 3-0 came against a soft schedule, though, and the rating can't see that Tulsa is starting its backup quarterback.

Keys to the game
  • Tulsa starting QB Baylor Hayes has a Grade 1 knee sprain and is not expected to play vs Arkansas; backup Dexter Williams II will start
  • Arkansas HC Ryan Silverfield said KJ Jackson is the starting QB, but Jackson and AJ Hill traded series against Georgia on 9/19
What beats it

On the spread. If Dexter Williams II struggles making his first spot start against a true SEC front, and Arkansas's committee QB approach still finds enough plays, Arkansas could win comfortably; Tulsa's slate (Oklahoma State, Sam Houston, East Texas A&M) is also far weaker than Arkansas's SEC schedule, so Tulsa's gaudy defensive numbers could be a product of soft opponents.

On the total. Arkansas's defense (34.0 PPG allowed) and a possibly rusty backup-Tulsa passing attack could still produce a shootout if either secondary can't get stops, especially with Arkansas playing from behind and forced to throw.

Read Buck's full case

Spread.Arkansas is favored by roughly a touchdown at home, but its defense has been the worst unit on this board, 34.0 PPG allowed with blowout losses to Utah and Georgia, under a brand-new staff (HC Ryan Silverfield, first year) still sorting out a QB rotation between KJ Jackson and AJ Hill. Tulsa is 3-0 with a defense allowing just 9.0 PPG, and even with starting QB Baylor Hayes out (Grade 1 knee sprain, confirmed by ESPN's Pete Thamel on 9/21-22), backup Dexter Williams II already looked functional in relief last week, throwing for 164 yards and 3 TDs. The spread has drifted from Arkansas -7/-9.5 at open down to -7/-7.5, suggesting the market is already softening on Arkansas, but I think the true edge is larger given the specific matchup: Arkansas's shaky offense against Tulsa's excellent defense, and Arkansas's leaky defense against a functional backup Tulsa QB. Worth a standard-strength bet at current numbers.

Total. Both offenses take the field with QB uncertainty, Tulsa without starter Baylor Hayes (Grade 1 knee sprain) and Arkansas still rotating Jackson and Hill under a first-year staff, and the total has already fallen about 2.5 points this week to reflect it, from the low 50s to 50.5. That's the market doing its job; I don't see a specific angle the number hasn't already absorbed. Arkansas's defense (34.0 PPG allowed) is bad enough that points could still come if either offense finds a rhythm, and Tulsa's defense, while stingy on paper, hasn't faced an SEC-caliber offense yet this year. I lean under given the QB downgrades but I'm passing since the market move already reflects the same information I have.

The call, written up

No call on the spread

Tulsa at Arkansas, Arkansas -7. No pick. The market opened as high as Arkansas -9.5 (FanDuel) and -8.5 (DraftKings) and has drifted to -7 across books (BetMGM also -7), tightening toward Tulsa through the week. Tulsa starting quarterback Baylor Hayes is doubtful with a knee sprain, and backup Dexter Williams is expected to start again after going 14 of 26 for 164 yards and three touchdowns without an interception against East Texas A&M on September 19. Arkansas managed just 45 rushing yards on 17 non-sack carries against Georgia on September 20. Only one panel would actually bet Tulsa at the captured price; the other two required a better number than the +7 on the board. The counter-case: Arkansas has faced Utah and Georgia while Tulsa's 3-0 start came against a softer schedule, including an FCS opponent. No pick on the spread.

No call on the total

No pick on the total. All three panels passed, the required three abstentions under the basis rule. The number has fallen from an open near 52.5-53.5 to 50.5-51 now, tracking both teams' quarterback uncertainty: Tulsa's Hayes doubtful, Arkansas rotating KJ Jackson and AJ Hill. Weather is mild (partly cloudy, about 81F, 7.9 mph wind) and not a factor. No pick on the total.

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
