Keys to the game
  • Tennessee’s Sept. 29 press conference described a defense leading the country in sacks and Auburn QB Byrum Brown as a running threat.
  • Auburn’s Sept. 26 official recap records the 21-15 Vanderbilt win, including the blocked-punt touchdown and late Brown to Singleton conversion.
  • Tennessee’s official Texas recap records the 20-17 score and 201 to 61 rushing-yard edge.
What beats it

On the spread. If Brandon is fully cleared and Tennessee’s front consistently disrupts Brown, Auburn’s low-margin Vanderbilt win and dependence on a special-teams score look less transferable on the road.

On the total. If Brandon is cleared and both offenses convert explosive opportunities instead of repeating last week’s field-position games, the low total can be reached despite the weather.

Spread.Market first: the spread has been cut from Tennessee minus 8.5 at FanDuel and minus 7.5 at several books to minus 7 or minus 7.5, despite Tennessee’s nationally prominent home spot. That move is the strongest case that Auburn’s competitive SEC results and Alex Golesh’s familiar offense have already earned more respect than the opener. Auburn plus 7.5 is the only captured price that clears the key number, so it is the directional lean. Tennessee’s defense has real evidence behind its rating, however, and Auburn needed a blocked punt plus late clock management to beat Vanderbilt. Tennessee also outgained Texas on the ground but lost a tight game. Our model’s Tennessee minus 8.1 is only one point from market and its documented ATS record supplies no reason to override the market. Brandon’s shoulder status keeps this a pass, not a bet.

Total.Market first: the total fell from 57.5 at DraftKings and 58.5 at FanDuel to 54.5 in the captured board, so the market has already discounted the low-scoring recent SEC evidence and forecast rain. Still, Under 54.5 at DraftKings minus 110 is a full point better than a live BetMGM listing of 53.5, and it is the actionable captured stale value. Tennessee’s 20-17 Texas game and Auburn’s 21-15 Vanderbilt game both showed defenses and possession-heavy finishes capable of suppressing this number. Auburn’s special-teams touchdown versus Vanderbilt also illustrates that scoring was not solely offensive. Brandon’s unresolved status is a downside risk for the under only if a replacement creates short fields.

Where our number looks wrong. The model treats Tennessee as an 8.1-point favorite, but its one-point disagreement with the market is far below its own error scale. It also does not incorporate Brandon’s shoulder issue, Auburn’s new Golesh offense, or the market’s move through eight toward seven.

More key facts
  • Brandon briefly exited with a shoulder issue and returned against Texas.
  • Tennessee’s 20-17 loss to Texas included 201 rushing yards and six sacks by its defense.
  • Auburn’s 21-15 win over Vanderbilt included a blocked-punt touchdown and a late clock-killing drive.
  • BetMGM’s live game page listed a 53.5 total after the captured 54.5 board.
  • Knoxville’s Oct. 3 forecast showed rain risk and light wind around the afternoon hours.

Keys to the game
  • Tennessee lost 20-17 to Texas with 221 yards and 10 sacks allowed; Brandon 0 interceptions this season
  • Heupel says Brandon needs to play better and the offensive line must play at a higher level; a Tennessee safety is out for the season
  • Auburn beat Vanderbilt 21-15 with 139 rushing yards and a blocked punt touchdown
What beats it

On the spread. Tennessee's line allowed 10 sacks and the offense did not score an offensive touchdown until the final moments against Texas; if Brandon's shoulder lingers or the protection fails again, Auburn's defense, which held Vanderbilt to 15, can keep this within a touchdown. Golesh's staff knows the Tennessee system, rain is forecast, and a 7 point spread lands on the key number where a push or a backdoor cover is live.

On the total. Tennessee put up 56, 45 and 42 against its three non-Texas opponents and Auburn is not Texas defensively; Heupel's pace plus Auburn's 39 point game against Florida show both teams can push this past 55, and a four day forecast for rain is not reliable.

Spread.Market first: Tennessee opened 7.5 to 8.5 and has settled at 7 at four of five books, 7.5 at FanDuel. The strongest explanation for the number is that Tennessee is the better roster at home but its offense just produced 221 yards and allowed 10 sacks against Texas, freshman QB Faizon Brandon is still finding his feet and banged his right shoulder, and Alex Golesh knows the Heupel system from the inside, which the market has respected by trimming half a point to a point toward Auburn. The news cuts both ways: Brandon returned in the Texas game and Heupel said the arm was fine, while Auburn managed only 287 yards against Vanderbilt and keeps starting slowly on offense. Tennessee scored 42 or more in all three non-Texas games. I lean Tennessee at 7 because Auburn's offense has not shown it can keep pace on the road, but the move toward Auburn and the key number make this a lean, not a bet.

Total. The total has fallen from 57.5 to 58.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel to 54.5, so the market has already priced a lot of the Tennessee offensive struggle against Texas and Auburn's 287 yard effort against Vanderbilt. The over case: Tennessee averaged 47.7 points in its three non-Texas games, Auburn scored 39 against Florida, and Heupel's tempo inflates play counts. The under case: rain is in the captured forecast, Tennessee's line was overwhelmed last week, Auburn's offense keeps starting slowly and its defense has allowed 16 and 15 in its two low scoring wins. I lean under at 54.5, but the move has taken the value.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating cannot see that Tennessee's offensive line was overwhelmed by Texas or that a freshman QB with a shoulder knock is running the offense, and Tennessee's 40 points per game is inflated by Furman, Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech. It also cannot see Golesh's familiarity with the Heupel scheme. Those items argue the model's 8.1 is slightly too high, which is why the lean is at 7 only.

Keys to the game
  • Tennessee opens as touchdown-plus favorite at home vs Auburn
  • Brandon exits Texas game with injury, returns
What beats it

On the spread. Tennessee scores 40 a game, has a deeper roster, is at home, and covers 7 with any two-score win. If Brandon is fine and the run game is healthy, Auburn's thin offense with RB and WR losses may not keep pace, and the line moving down to 7 could be sharp respect for Auburn's defense rather than an inefficiency I can exploit.

On the total. Tennessee scored 45 at Georgia Tech and Auburn allowed 44 to Florida; both offenses can score in bunches, and rain is a forecast six days out that could fade. Healthy Tennessee backs make the over live.

Spread. The market has Tennessee about a touchdown favorite at home, moved from an opener of 7.5 to 8.5 down to 7 at most books. The strongest explanation is simple: Tennessee is ranked 17th, scores 40 a game, is at Neyland, and lost only 17 to 20 to Texas, while Auburn is a first-year-coach team that needed a late stop to beat Vanderbilt 21 to 15 and beat Baylor 17 to 16. The steam already went toward Auburn, and Tennessee's quarterback Faizon Brandon carries an upper body question after leaving the Texas game for a drive. Auburn is missing a WR and RB per our injury scan, which the price likely reflects. Seven is a key number and I see no incremental evidence that clears a bet, so this is a lean on the points at seven, not a play.

Total. The over case is Tennessee's 40 points a game and Auburn's 44 allowed in a shootout loss to Florida. The under case is weather, with a rain forecast near two thirds chance on the captured forecast, Auburn's slower two-score style in low-scoring wins over Baylor and Vanderbilt, and Tennessee's defense allowing 15.5 a game. The market already dropped several points, so the easy value is gone, but rain plus a possible Brandon limitation lean slightly under at 54 or better. Not a bet.

The call, written up

No call on the spread

Auburn at Tennessee, Tennessee -7.1. No pick. One panel would only take Auburn at +7.5, captured only at FanDuel at -122, while another priced its lean at +7 at -108 to -106. The market opened Tennessee -7.5 to -8.5 and is now -7 at most books. Tennessee lost 20-17 to Texas with 221 yards and 10 sacks allowed, and freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon hurt his shoulder but returned. Auburn beat Vanderbilt 21-15 on 287 yards and a blocked punt touchdown, and coach Alex Golesh knows the Heupel system. The case for Tennessee: Auburn's offense starts slowly on the road and Tennessee scored 42 or more in its other three games. The case for Auburn: the key number 7 and steam toward it. No pick on the spread.

On the total

Under 54.5. The captured forecast shows rain, 77F and light wind, Tennessee managed 221 yards against Texas, and Auburn managed 287 against Vanderbilt. The counter-case: Tennessee averaged 47.7 points in its three other games, Auburn scored 39 against Florida, and the move has already taken much of the value. Take Under 54.5 at -110 at DraftKings.

How to read this page

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
