Iowa State at Iowa. Our picks: Iowa State +14 (medium). Under 40.5 (medium).
The picks come first on this page. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit under them as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. Tiers are how decisively the evidence agreed, never a win probability.
Panel reasoning
Iowa State at Iowa, Iowa -14. DraftKings opened -11.5 and sits -14 while the total fell from 42.5 to 40.5: the market has repriced this as a low-scoring Iowa grind, and laying two touchdowns in a game expected to produce 41 points is the whole question. Iowa has not named a quarterback (Hank Brown 12-of-20 for 129, Hecklinski 7-of-16 with an interception), RB L.J. Phillips is out with a high ankle sprain and S Tyler Brown is out again. Iowa State is Jimmy Rogers's first season (our flag is wrong) with 83 newcomers, Jaylen Raynor threw four touchdowns on 8-of-16 and DL Isaac Terrell had three sacks. Seventy-four percent of the handle is on Iowa. Our number (Iowa -13.5) agrees with the market and offers nothing. The counter-case is Iowa's shutout defense and 289 rushing yards against Northern Illinois. Take Iowa State +14 (13.5 at FanDuel is worse).
Under 40.5. The total opened 41.5 to 42.5 and sits 40.5 to 41; the last two Cy-Hawk games were low, Iowa's passing operation is unsettled and its backfield thin, Iowa State's roster is rebuilt, and there is a 30 percent shower chance at the 6:30pm Central kickoff. Our totals model's 44.6 leans over but is inside its noise and reads last year's units. The over case is Raynor's four touchdowns and Iowa's ground game. Under 40.5 (41 at Pinnacle).
Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the picks above are the call. Nothing in this block is a pick.
Context, not a call. The spread number is our rating difference plus home field. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
Over and under splits
Descriptive context on this game, every line with the games it counts. None of it is a reason a pick wins and none of it enters a tier.
- Iowa State games go UNDER 58% on the road (n=67)Multi-season split: Iowa State on the road landed under 58% of 67 gradable games (2013-2025). A genuine venue tendency, one of several reasons to lean under, not a standalone edge.
- Iowa State have gone UNDER in 7 of their last 10Iowa State's last 10 gradable games landed under 70% vs the consensus total. Streak continuation tested 2013-2025: 49.5% train / 46.4% held-out 2025, it does NOT persist. A real recent pattern, weigh with the matchup, not alone.

Iowa State +14
Under 40.5
Take Iowa State +14, displayed by DraftKings during research. EL's Iowa -13.5 offers only half a point of nominal value; its unproven calibration cannot justify this bet. My lean instead rests on Iowa's unsettled quarterback position and the premium now charged after its opening shutout. The dossier's DraftKings move from -11.5 to -14 already prices substantial separation between these teams. Iowa State's rebuild is real, but experienced transfer quarterback Jaylen Raynor provides more functional experience than its tiny returning-production figure suggests. Iowa's missing safety Tyler Brown modestly helps that matchup; losing L.J. Phillips reduces rushing depth without removing Kamari Moulton. The strongest counterargument is Iowa's defensive dominance meeting an extensively rebuilt opponent in its first road game. DraftKings also reports substantially more spread money on Iowa, although that does not establish informed action. With a low total and unresolved Iowa passing efficiency, two touchdowns provide enough protection for a modest dog lean.
Total. Take under 40.5 at the freshly displayed DraftKings number. EL's 44.61 supports the over, but that four-point difference is small against its historical error and depends heavily on departed personnel. The under case is Iowa's unresolved passing operation, reduced running-back depth and a substantial defensive test for Raynor after an FCS opener. The over deserves respect: Moulton supplies explosive runs, Raynor can create outside structure, and Tyler Brown's absence weakens Iowa's secondary depth. Modest forecast wind does not justify a major weather deduction. Furthermore, the dossier's falling total means under bettors have already lost value. DraftKings' exceptionally concentrated under handle is descriptive, not proof of an edge. I narrowly favor offensive inefficiency prevailing, with low conviction because explosive plays and short fields can defeat this number quickly.
Where our model looks wrong
The first_year_head_coach=false input for Iowa State is factually wrong: Jimmy Rogers is a first-year coach. Returning production also does not capture incoming quarterback experience. Stretching the raw 11.7-point margin to 13.5 adds favorite confidence unsupported by the model's ATS record. The totals model's reliance on prior rosters is particularly questionable with Iowa's quarterback change and Iowa State's new staff and extensive turnover.
Iowa State +14
Under 41
Our number (Iowa -13.5) and the market (-13.9) agree, so the model offers no edge here, and it has none historically anyway (46-50% ATS in every gap bucket). The tradeable information is elsewhere. DraftKings opened -11.5 on 9/1 and sits -14 on 9/9 while the total fell from 42.5 to 40.5 - the market has repriced this as a low-scoring Iowa grind, and laying two touchdowns now means buying at the top of that move with the public split roughly even (Iowa 52% on the spread, VegasInsider 9/9). Iowa's offense does not look built to win by 15: Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski split the opener, a combined 19-of-36 for 205 yards against Northern Illinois, and Iowa State's staff says it must prepare for both (SI, 9/9). Ferentz confirmed 9/9 that RB L.J. Phillips (high ankle) and S Tyler Brown are out. Iowa State has won the last two Cy-Hawks 20-19 and 16-13, both one-score. But this Cyclone roster is genuinely gutted and Iowa's defense is elite, so this is a lean, not a bet. Take the 14, not FanDuel's 13.5.
Total. Our totals model says 44.6 against a 40.6 market, a 4-point over lean - but its own out-of-sample error is 12.86 points, so 4 is noise, and this early the number is mostly last season's ridge terms with no read at all on Iowa State's rebuilt roster or Iowa's quarterback split. The fundamentals point the other way. The last two Cy-Hawk games totalled 39 and 29 points. Iowa allowed 16.1 per game in 2025 and shut out Northern Illinois, while its own passing game produced 205 yards on 36 attempts across two quarterbacks. Iowa State breaks in a new offense under a first-year staff on the road at night, with its Week 1 leading rusher questionable. Weather is benign - 79F, 5 mph NW wind, 26% shower chance at kickoff - so there is no wind help, which caps conviction. Take the 41 at Pinnacle rather than the 40.5 elsewhere.
Where our model looks wrong
Two places. First, the preseason prior carries first_year_head_coach = false for Iowa State, but Jimmy Rogers is in his first season there (SI, 9/9); combined with 1.7% returning production and a -13 portal net, the prior is if anything UNDER-penalising the Cyclones, which argues against my own side and is why I am at 57 rather than higher. Second, the rating learns from final margins only, so it cannot see that Iowa's quarterback job is unresolved and that Iowa threw for 205 yards on 36 attempts against a MAC team - the single most important fact about whether a 14-point cover is reachable. The flat 2.5-point home field also under-prices a night Cy-Hawk at Kinnick. And the honest headline: the model's own held-out record is 46-50% ATS at every gap size, so its -13.5 is not evidence of anything; this pick rests on price and news, not on the number.
Iowa State +14
Under 40.5
Our model's fair number (-13.5) already matches the -13.5/-14 market almost exactly (gap -0.4, inside the pass zone), so there is no model-vs-market edge here -- this pick rests on situational reads the model cannot see. Iowa (Big Ten, #21, 1-0) blitzed Northern Illinois 40-0 behind 289 rush yards (7.6 ypc) and a shutout defense (SI.com/Riley Donald, 9/6-9/8), but enters unresolved at QB: Hank Brown started Week 1 and Jeremy Hecklinski also played meaningfully, with no Week 2 starter named as of 9/9 (SI.com). Iowa is also missing starting RB L.J. Phillips (high ankle sprain, Ferentz: 'definitely not this week,' SI.com 9/8) and safety Tyler Brown (SI.com 9/8), losses the preseason-weighted rating cannot see. Iowa State's defense (6 sacks, 12 TFL, an interception and two forced fumbles vs SEMO) and its Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week (Isaac Terrell) travel; QB Jaylen Raynor threw 4 TDs but completed only 8-of-16 (SI.com 9/6). VegasInsider shows spread tickets split near 52/48 despite a 99% moneyline consensus on Iowa -- sharper spread money than the score gap implies. Rivalry games and Ferentz-era Iowa trend toward controlled, closer-than-the-number scripts. Taking the points.
Total. Our totals model predicts 44.6 vs a 40.5-41 market (a 4-point gap, below its own 12.86-point action threshold, so it stays silent) -- it also carries this season's thin sample and sees no injuries or weather. The market's own history argues under: the total opened 41.5-42.5 (8/30-9/6 across books) and has drifted to 40.5-41 by 9/9 even though VegasInsider shows the public near 64% on the over -- a classic reverse-line-movement signal that sharper money is on the under. Both defenses looked stingy in Week 1 (Iowa shutout, Iowa State allowed 10 with 6 sacks/12 TFL), Iowa's run-control identity under Ferentz favors clock-killing if it builds a lead, and Iowa is missing its lead back (Phillips, ankle). Weather (upper-70s, ~7 mph wind, ~25-30% isolated shower chance) is not a hard suppressor either way. Taking the under.
Where our model looks wrong
The model's -13.5 already lines up with the market (gap -0.4), so it isn't flagging an edge -- if anything, that flat agreement is the miss. It is preseason-composite-driven (blue-chip ratio .195 vs .033, returning production .342 vs .017 heavily favor Iowa) and, one game into the season, is still mostly that prior. It cannot see the live QB-rotation uncertainty on the team it likes, or the RB1 and starting-safety absences (Phillips, T. Brown) that were confirmed by Iowa's own coach this week. A model that read those inputs would plausibly shade a point or two toward Iowa State, not sit flat with Vegas.

Confidence: medium
Three independent analyst panels (A, B and C) worked the same evidence pack and the week's news independently, each returned a side, and each then ranked its five strongest picks for the week. Every panel was on this side. Medium is a decisiveness label for how firmly the panel agreed, never a win probability: high means every panel was on this side and ranked it among the week's best; only high picks count on the record and go free.
The total: Under 40.5 (medium)

Conditions at kickoff

Provenance: schedule and finals from the Edge Labs database (2026 season); the line is the latest capture for this game with the book named; our number is the EL rating read (in-season once a team has played, preseason before that) plus 2.5 home field, none at neutral sites, and it is context on this page rather than the call. Signals come from the trend engine, each with its real sample; a tier is how decisively the evidence agreed and is never a win probability. Once the game kicks off this page stops computing and reads our pick lock ledger instead: the pick and the spread we were locked at, written once at kickoff, never updated, graded against that same number. Line movement comes from our permanent capture log, one book across both ends and never a capture taken at or after kickoff, so the second number is the last pregame line and after kickoff it is the close; a game the log has captured only once shows no movement rather than an invented one. Weather is the captured forecast for the venue, and the chip appears only when it is worth saying (wind at 12 mph or more, a 50 percent or better chance of rain, or 35F or colder), never on an indoor venue. Injury counts are our latest daily scan, real report rows only, and a team the scan does not cover is left out rather than shown as zero. The write-up is assembled from those same stored rows, never written around them: the case comes from the lock row, the signals from the trend engine with their own samples, the series from our game database from 2013 forward, and the scoring profiles from completed games only, each with the number of games it averages. A section with no data behind it is left out instead of filled in, it refreshes while the game is pregame, and it can never be edited once the game has kicked off. Trends are descriptive only, computed by the same shared module the write-up uses so the two cannot disagree: straight-up splits come from completed games in our database, situational splits look back three seasons and need at least eight decided games, records against the number and on the total arrive with the closing-line restore, and every line carries the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of them enter the confidence read. The totals block is a read and not a pick: our number is EL CFB Totals v1 (edgelabs.el_cfb_totals, season 2026, model_version v1, docs/el-cfb-totals-v1.md), a registered candidate that loses to the closing total, so it never posts to the board or the record; the market total beside it is the same capture the spread comes from before kickoff and the frozen consensus the model priced against after it, and the gap is measured against whichever number is printed. The totals trends under it are the trend engine's own rows for this game, deduped on the headline, each carrying its sample. On the games the analyst panel works each week (the games our model prices off the market plus the ranked and Power Four games, at most twenty), the pick and the total call are the panel's synthesis: three independent analyst panels, the same evidence pack, their own research, one side each, tiered by how firmly they agreed, never a win probability. A panel majority on a side is what makes a pick; without one the game is a published no-pick, printed as No pick rather than left blank. Research and context, never a guarantee, 21+.
