Spread.Arkansas State +20.5 is a modest lean. EL makes TCU -12.8, a 7.7-point disagreement with this ticket, but I would shrink that substantially toward the market. Arkansas State allowed Memphis 335 rushing yards, and its subsequent 52-point performance included two defensive touchdowns. Those details undermine the apparent model bargain. The case for taking points is offensive competence: Trey Owens generated 325 passing yards at Memphis despite four interceptions, giving Arkansas State a plausible route to enough scoring to stay inside three touchdowns. TCU's 676-yard rebound against Grambling demonstrates its ceiling, but does not establish that production against FBS opposition. Dwyer's absence supports the underdog slightly; it predates this market and should not receive another full adjustment. Chapman's availability remains unresolved. The captured spread has barely moved, providing no strong market endorsement. I see a smaller cushion than EL suggests, with turnover and run-defense risks keeping confidence low.

Total.I lean over 55.5 despite EL's 54.59 projection. Arkansas State's 434 yards at Memphis offer more encouragement than its turnover-suppressed 24 points, while its vulnerability against the run gives TCU another scoring route beyond Craig's passing. New coordinator Garrett Altman also weakens reliance on last year's offensive baseline. The under case is credible: Dwyer's absence limits TCU, Arkansas State's two defensive touchdowns inflated last week's score, and only 59 offensive plays at Memphis caution against assuming fast tempo. Most captured books lowered their totals, although FanDuel rose from 54.5. That creates a better over entry without proving the decline was mistaken. Warm, clear conditions provide no compelling weather-based under argument. I narrowly favor offensive efficiency over those restraints. The selection uses the timestamped dossier quote because no newer, book-attributed total was verified.

Where our number looks wrong.TCU -12.8 likely understates the favorite's advantage. Final margins obscure Arkansas State's defensive scoring against West Georgia and its severe rushing-defense problems at Memphis. TCU's offensive rebound had much stronger yardage support. The totals model also carries stale personnel assumptions: Arkansas State now has Owens and coordinator Garrett Altman. Its documentation says no weather, yet the supplied calculation explicitly deducts 2.065 points for wind; that inconsistency needs correction.

Spread. The market is pricing TCU's 63-7 Grambling scoreline, not TCU's only FBS data point. Against a real defense in Dublin the Frogs scored 10 in a 15-10 loss to North Carolina (ESPN schedule, 8/29/26) with a first-year quarterback in Harvard transfer Jaden Craig and a first-year coordinator in Gordon Sammis (Yahoo Sports season preview, 2026). Our rating says -12.8 against a market of -20.2, a 7.4-point gap on the Arkansas State side; I discount that heavily because the in-season refit after two games is still mostly the preseason prior, but the direction matches what the tape suggests. Arkansas State has a Power-4 starting quarterback in Texas transfer Trey Owens, who went 21-of-30 for 325 yards at Memphis and was publicly confirmed as the starter going forward (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 9/7/26). A veteran Butch Jones team with a functioning passing game is a live dog at three touchdowns. Two books have already ticked -20.5 to -20. Take the points.

Total.Only FanDuel ticked up, 54.5 to 55.5. The supporting case is that TCU's offense has produced exactly one FBS data point and it was 10 points, and TCU's defense has allowed 11 points a game across a Power-4 and an FCS opponent. Arkansas State's 52 included two defensive touchdowns against an FCS team, so the offense accounted for roughly 38. Heat is the one over argument and it is a real one, but I would rather be with the money that moved.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating punishes TCU almost entirely for one 15-10 loss to a Power-4 opponent in a neutral-site opener and gives back very little for a 56-point win, so 1.626 probably understates a roster with a .158 blue-chip ratio and a defense allowing 11 points a game. A true number here is more like TCU -16 to -17, not our -12.8. That means the honest edge on Arkansas State is roughly three to four points, not the 7.4 the gap advertises, and the model's stated no-ATS-edge holdout record is the reason I am at 60 and not higher. The model also cannot see that TCU is two weeks into a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator, which is the actual argument for this side.

Spread. Our number (TCU -12.8) sits 7.4 points inside the market (-20.2 to -20.5), and the model carries no proven ATS edge, so treat this as a lean, not a signal. TCU's 11 PPG defensive average is inflated by two soft opponents (a bunkered UNC offense, then an FCS-caliber Grambling team it beat 63-7); Arkansas State's own 52-7 win over West Georgia and 24-42 road loss to Memphis (only an 18-point defeat vs a G5-quality Memphis team) suggest more competence than a 20+ point home dog spread implies. TCU also enters this thinner at receiver: Dozie Ezukanma remains out after an Aug. 13 locker-room assault left him with a brain bleed and concussion (ESPN/Breitbart, 9/1), and J. Dwyer (foot) was added to the injury list 9/11 per our Covers scan. Books have shaded the number down slightly (from -20.5 open to -20 at BetMGM, 9/13-9/14), suggesting the market itself sees some value on the dog. I don't have full confidence in this being a sharp signal, hence a modest number.

Total. The total has drifted down from an open near 56.5-57.5 across every book we track to 55.5-56 by 9/14, which is a mild market signal toward the under. A 94F kickoff (per our captured forecast) with 10.5 mph wind isn't a hard weather driver either way, but a lopsided game script (TCU is a 20+ point favorite) often means running clock and backups in the second half, capping the total even if TCU's offense is efficient early. Arkansas State's defense has been shredded once already (42 allowed to Memphis) which cuts the other way, but I weight the line-movement and blowout-script logic slightly higher.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating is still mostly preseason prior plus two results against very unequal competition (an FCS blowout for TCU, an FCS-adjacent blowout for Arkansas State), so both teams' in-season ratings are likely noisy in opposite directions. It also has zero visibility into TCU's receiver-room attrition from the Ezukanma assault, which happened well before the model's inputs would reflect a skill-position downgrade.

On the spread

Arkansas State at TCU, TCU -20.5. All three panels take the points. Our own number has TCU -12.8, a 7.4 point gap toward Arkansas State, and books have only nudged the line from -20.5 to -20 since September 13, not a strong market endorsement either way. The case for TCU is real: Jaden Craig threw for 391 yards and four touchdowns against Grambling on September 13, and TCU has allowed just 11 points a game. But that defense has faced a bunkered North Carolina offense and an FCS team, and TCU lost 10-15 to North Carolina in its only Power 4 game. Arkansas State's Trey Owens went 21 of 30 for 325 yards at Memphis on September 6 and was confirmed the starter, and the defense scored twice against West Georgia on September 12. Arkansas State's run defense allowed 335 yards to Memphis, which cuts against the dog. TCU's Dozie Ezukanma and J. Dwyer remain out. Take Arkansas State +20.5 (+20 at BetMGM).

On the total

Under 55.5. Four of five books have moved the total down since September 13, with only FanDuel ticking up from 54.5 to 55.5. TCU has scored just 10 points against its lone Power 4 opponent, and a lopsided game script can mean running clock and backups in the second half. The counter-case is offensive: Arkansas State gained 434 yards at Memphis and TCU put up 676 yards against Grambling on September 13, and warm, clear conditions near 94 degrees give no weather-based under argument. Take the under 55.5 at BetMGM or DraftKings.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
