Oklahoma State at Houston. Pick: Under 62.5. No call on the spread.
The call
The panelists
- Oklahoma State reports a 4-1 record, a four-game winning streak, and ranks sixth nationally in total offense and passing offense.
- Houston coverage notes that Oklahoma State allowed West Virginia 335 rushing yards and that Houston averages 230 rushing yards per game.
- The conference publishes daily football availability reports beginning three days before conference games.
On the spread. Oklahoma State's top-six total and passing offenses, led by Mestemaker, can turn this into a possession-for-possession game. If Houston's questioned running back, receiver or tight end is ruled out, the Cougars lose depth and this lean disappears.
On the total. Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins and Wyatt Young form the only FBS trio ranked in the top 15 in passing, rushing and receiving yards per game, and Houston has enough offensive balance to answer. A fast game with clean weather makes the market's move to the low 60s fully justified.

Spread.Market first, Houston has been supported from its early -2.5 to -4.5 range because it is 5-1, has just won 35-16 at Kansas State, and returns home for a ranked night game. That move already prices much of the basic Houston form case. I still lean Houston -4.5: the Cougars are more balanced than Oklahoma State, which has been vulnerable on the ground, and the number remains below our -12.1 context number. But this is not a bet. Oklahoma State's wholesale rebuild, Eric Morris offense and Drew Mestemaker's production are precisely the sort of current-team information our margin model understates. The Big 12 report has not yet posted its first game-week availability update, so Houston's questioned skill players remain unresolved.
Total.Market first, the total rose from 57.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel to 62.5 as bettors priced the two high-output offenses, Oklahoma State's three consecutive 40-point games and a benign forecast. That is a persuasive explanation for the present number. Under 62.5 is only a lean, not a bet. Houston's recent conference totals were 44 against UCF and 51 at Kansas State, while Oklahoma State's rebuilt offense creates a much higher scoring ceiling than our 53.46 model recognizes. The model's 8.8-point gap is smaller than its historical error and its prior-season inputs are especially vulnerable to this Cowboy roster reset. Fair weather removes a meaningful under catalyst.
Where our number looks wrong. The -12.1 Houston number is too aggressive because the rating is anchored to Oklahoma State's 2025 collapse and preseason transfer assumptions. Oklahoma State's new staff and 91-player influx have produced a current top-six offense, so treating its 4-1 start as a small-sample mirage would be a mistake.
- Oklahoma State's official preview says it has scored more than 40 points in three straight games and ranks sixth in total offense and passing offense.
- Houston's official schedule records a 27-17 win over UCF and 35-16 win at Kansas State.
- The October 17 Houston forecast shows partly cloudy conditions around 72 degrees at 7 p.m.
- Oklahoma State 4-1 with a bye on Oct 3 and results L 24-10 at Tulsa, W 39-31 Oregon, W 59-0 Murray State, W 41-24 at West Virginia, W 42-28 UCF.
- Houston played six straight weeks: W 33-20 Oregon State, W 77-6 Southern, L 28-26 at Texas Tech, W 42-28 at Georgia Southern, W 27-17 UCF, W 35-16 at Kansas State.
- Houston outgained Kansas State 475 to 299 with zero turnovers and held the ball 34:49; Weigman threw four touchdowns.
On the spread. Houston's underlying play is the more efficient: one interception all year, a 230 yard per game rushing attack that can shorten the game, and a dominant road win last week. Oklahoma State lost by 14 at Tulsa and needed a fourth quarter fumble return touchdown to separate from UCF while outgaining them only 414 to 375. The line moving from 2.5 to 4.5 suggests sharper money already disagrees with the dog. If Houston's questionable skill players and kicker all play, the case for the points thins further.
On the total. Oklahoma State has scored 39 or more in three of four FBS games and its games have gone 65 or higher three times. Both quarterbacks are efficient, weather is benign, and a defense allowing 26.8 per FBS game faces a Houston offense that just put up 475 yards on the road. A single defensive or special teams score, like Oklahoma State's fumble return last week, clears this number quickly.

Spread. The strongest case for that price is Houston's cleaner profile: 5-1 with the only loss by two at Texas Tech, a 475 to 299 yardage beating of Kansas State on the road, and Conner Weigman at 15 TD to 1 INT. Our number says Houston by 12.1, but that gap has no proven edge and is inflated by a 77-6 win over FCS Southern and by Oklahoma State's dreadful preseason prior. Stripping FCS games, Houston scores 32.6 and allows 21.8 against FBS opponents while Oklahoma State scores 33.0 and allows 26.8, which crosses to roughly a field goal in Houston's favor at home. Oklahoma State also comes off an Oct 3 bye while Houston has played six straight weeks, and Houston lists kicker E. Noel as questionable. I lean Oklahoma State at the best captured +5, not enough to bet into a market that has already moved the other way.
Total. The total opened 57.5 at FanDuel and DraftKings and now sits 62 to 62.5, so the market has already priced Oklahoma State's offensive turnaround (38.2 points per game after 14.2 last year) and Houston's 40 per game. Both of those averages lean on FCS blowouts. Against FBS opponents only, Houston scores 32.6 and allows 21.8, Oklahoma State scores 33.0 and allows 26.8, which crosses to about 57. Houston's last two games totaled 44 and 51, and its run heavy offense held the ball nearly 35 minutes at Kansas State, which trims possessions. The over case is real: Oklahoma State passes for 322 a game and its FBS games have totaled 34, 70, 65 and 70. I lean under at 62.5 after a five point move, short of a bet. Our totals model at 53.5 points the same way but mostly reflects last season and misses Oklahoma State's new offense.
Where our number looks wrong. Our rating has Houston by 12.1. It learns only from final margins, so Houston's 77-6 rout of FCS Southern inflates it, and Oklahoma State's rating is still dragged by a preseason prior of 12.8 below average built on zero returning production and a 1-11 2025. Oklahoma State's FBS results (beat Oregon, won by 17 at West Virginia) say that prior is badly stale. A fair number looks closer to 3 than 12.
- Oklahoma State outgained UCF 414 to 375; a 28 yard fumble return touchdown in the fourth quarter put them up 35-21.
- Game page lists No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 20 Houston, Fox, 7:30pm ET, moneyline Oklahoma State +160, Houston -192.
- Houston 35-16 at Kansas State: Houston possession 34:49, 475 total yards.
- Oklahoma State team stats: 322.4 passing yards per game, 38.2 points scored, 21.4 allowed.
- Houston team stats: 230.0 rushing yards per game, 40.0 points scored, 19.2 allowed.
- Houston 5-1 results and Oct 17 home date vs Oklahoma State
- Oklahoma State 4-1 results including Tulsa loss and UCF win
- Quarterback stats and records for both teams, 74F forecast
On the spread. Oklahoma State has beaten Oregon, West Virginia and UCF by double digits or close to it, scores 38 points a game, and a first-year staff with an almost entirely new roster is hard to price. Four and a half points is a full touchdown shy of a key number cushion for a dog in a conference game, and the Houston skill-position questionables could matter. Houston has also failed to cover big at home when the offense is not clicking.
On the total. Both offenses are in the top tier of scoring in the Big 12, the weather is ideal, and Oklahoma State has allowed 24 or more in three of its last four games. If the move came from sharp over money or healthy skill players, the under is chasing a number that is correct.

Spread.Market-first read: Houston at home is a ranked 5-1 team that just won at Kansas State by 19 and whose only loss is a 2 point road game at Texas Tech. Oklahoma State is 4-1 with a first-year coach and a heavily rebuilt roster, a Week 1 loss at Tulsa, and a strong win over Oregon. The market moved Houston from 2.5 to 4 at some books up to 4.5 and 5, which already prices the home field and the resume gap. Common opponent UCF: Houston won 27-17 at home on Oct 3, Oklahoma State won 42-28 at home on Oct 10, so there is no clean separation. Houston quarterback Weigman has 15 touchdowns against 1 interception, a stable profile. The price is fair to slightly short of Houston, so I lean Houston at 4.5 or 5 as a small lean, not a bet. I could not verify any availability news beyond a questionable list of skill players from a Covers style scan, and I could not confirm betting splits.
Total. The total opened 57.5 to 61 and was bet up to 62 to 62.5, a move of 3 to 5 points with no confirmed news I could find. Season scoring is inflated by two blowouts of weak opponents (Houston 77-6 over Southern, Oklahoma State 59-0 over Murray State). Excluding those, Houston games total about 54 on average and Oklahoma State games about 60, which sits below 62.5. Against the over: both offenses are efficient, Oklahoma State defense allowed 31, 24 and 28 to Oregon, West Virginia and UCF, and perfect weather removes any wind or rain discount. The market has priced the pace and offense already, and the number is now above both teams recent range apart from the Oregon and UCF games. I lean under at 62 or better as a small lean, not a bet.

The call, written up
Under 62.5. The total opened 57.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel and was bet up to 62 to 62.5. Stripping FCS routs, Houston’s FBS games totaled 53, 54, 70, 44 and 51, and the FBS scoring profiles cross near 57. Weather is benign, 72 degrees and an 8.5 mph wind. The counter-case: Oklahoma State passes for 322.4 a game and three of its four FBS games reached 65 or more. Under 62.5 at -110, BetMGM.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total join these once our closing-line history is restored; the straight-up splits are live now.

Over and under splits
- Oklahoma State games go UNDER 57% on the road (n=70)Multi-season split: Oklahoma State on the road landed under 57% of 70 gradable games (2013-2025). A genuine venue tendency, one of several reasons to lean under, not a standalone edge.
