Spread.Take SMU +2.5, displayed at -114 on VegasInsider’s September 14 comparison. EL’s Louisville -1 provides only 1.5 points of theoretical value, and its failed ATS validation prevents treating that as an established edge. My preference rests on Jennings’ demonstrated passing production against FBS opposition: 430 yards at Florida State, followed by five first-half touchdowns against UC Davis. That gives SMU a credible route to winning outright rather than merely surviving with the points. Louisville deserves favoritism consideration: Kienholz has immediately produced, the Cardinals stay home, and their Friday game provides an extra recovery day. Those factors temper my preference for the more experienced quarterback. Brown’s reported injury adds uncertainty to Louisville’s backfield, but replacement production makes a large downgrade unjustified. The spread has barely moved despite the offensive headlines; there is no verified overlooked catalyst. I could not verify a current official availability report, complete game-week depth charts, new suspensions or reliable timestamped betting splits. This is a modest price-sensitive lean.
Total.Over 59.5 is a moderate lean despite EL’s 57.32. The strongest evidence extends beyond FCS blowouts: Jennings threw for 430 yards against Florida State, and Kienholz opened with 307 against Ole Miss. SMU then scored 42 before halftime against UC Davis, with the second half shortened. Both offenses have demonstrated explosive scoring capability. The under case is substantial: the market already moved from 56.5, weaker opponents inflate recent production, unresolved skill-player availability could matter, and thunderstorms could disrupt passing. SMU’s Florida State game also finished with only 51 points, illustrating that yardage need not become touchdowns. I nevertheless favor the passing matchups over the backward-looking scoring baseline. Without verified possession-adjusted tempo data, I am not assigning an additional pace premium.
Where our number looks wrong. The spread number is plausible, but final-margin learning misses Jennings’ substantial production behind a narrow Florida State win and Kienholz’s immediate effectiveness. The totals estimate of 57.32 looks somewhat low given both passing attacks, although the market has already adjusted. Its 1.30-point wind deduction at just 6.6 mph deserves scrutiny, especially against the description claiming weather is absent. Also verify venue coding: Louisville’s Ole Miss opener was in Nashville, not Louisville. Unconfirmed injury-feed entries should not receive automatic point adjustments.

Spread. Our number and the market agree this is a coin flip - Louisville -1.0 against a -1.8 consensus - so the tiebreaker has to come from the games themselves. SMU's 27-24 win at Florida State is far better than the margin: the Mustangs turned it over four times, gave up a touchdown off a muffed punt, and still outgained FSU by more than 250 yards at 8.7 yards per play, with three sacks and eight tackles for loss from a line breaking in two new co-coordinators (SI SMU and Seminoles.com, 9/8; Yahoo, 9/8). That is a top-25 team playing through negative turnover variance on the road. Louisville's 41-38 loss to Ole Miss was also strong, but it came at a neutral site in Nashville and its 59-13 follow-up was against Villanova. SMU also has the continuity edge - 56.9% returning production versus Louisville's 34.8% in our own file - and an established quarterback in Kevin Jennings against Lincoln Kienholz, who is making roughly his third career start. I will take the points.
Total.I am buying the worst price of the week here, which is why this is a lean and not a position. The total has been bid up from 56.5 at DraftKings on 9/1 and 53.5 at FanDuel on 9/10 to 59.5 at all five books (our line history) on the back of two FCS blowouts - Louisville 59-13 over Villanova, SMU 56-10 over UC Davis. Strip those and the FBS evidence splits: Louisville-Ole Miss produced 79 points, SMU-Florida State produced 51. The difference is SMU's defense, which is the best unit on the field - 17 points allowed per game, three sacks and eight tackles for loss at Florida State under new co-coordinators (Seminoles.com, 9/8). Louisville is also down two receivers with its lead back questionable. Our totals model sits at 57.3 and 59.5 is six points above the league average in our fit window.
Where our number looks wrong.Less wrong here than elsewhere - the model correctly declines to take a side at a 0.8-point gap. The weakness is what it cannot see. It has not adjusted for Louisville losing two wide receivers for extended stretches or for the fact that Louisville is on its fourth transfer quarterback in four years with only 34.8% returning production, while SMU returns 56.9% with its starter intact. It also treats Louisville's Ole Miss game as a home game in the sense that the rating's flat 2.5-point home field applies to this week only; the Ole Miss result itself came at a neutral site, so Louisville's in-season bump from 7.10 to 7.88 is partly credit for a game it played on the road. Against my side: the model, the market and home field all point a shade toward Louisville, and I am fading all three on inference from one road game.

Spread.SMU's Kevin Jennings has been outstanding (40-for-52, 767 yards, 8 TD, 2 INT through 2 games; Louisville HC Jeff Brohm called him one of the top 2-3 QBs in the country, Yahoo Sports 9/12/26), but SMU's run game is banged up: RB L. Rhodes is out for the season with a torn ACL (since 8/26/26) and RB C. Rhodes is Questionable (Covers.com scan via edgelabs dossier, 9/12/26), which could make SMU one-dimensional. Louisville's own RB Keyjuan Brown is Questionable after getting 'nicked up' vs Villanova (Yahoo Sports, 9/12/26), a similar-sized concern. What tips this for me is the market itself: scoresandodds.com (accessed 9/14/26) shows the public taking SMU +1.5 on 54% of bets, but 78% of the money is on Louisville, a clear sharp/steam signal on the home side despite SMU's higher ranking (#16 vs #23) and the loss Louisville took to Ole Miss in week 1. I'll side with the sharp money on a pick'em-type number rather than manufacture an edge the model doesn't have.
Total. What pushes me to the over is the quarterback play: SMU's Jennings has been elite (767 yards, 8 TD, only 2 INT) and Louisville's Kienholz has flashed explosive plays (a 69-yard TD pass to Jaleel Skinner vs Villanova, Yahoo Sports 9/12/26) even if his workload was lighter in the Ole Miss shootout loss. Both offenses have shown they can move fast and score, and Louisville's defense has already allowed 41 to Ole Miss this season. Weather (89F, light wind, low precip chance per the dossier) is a mild heat factor at most, not a scoring suppressant, notably cooler than the 107 heat index SMU played through last week (Yahoo Sports, 9/12/26). Some RB uncertainty on both sides could push both offenses to lean on their quarterbacks even more, which favors points over clock-control.
Where our number looks wrong. The model can't see either team's running-back injuries or the market's sharp-money tell, and its rating is still mostly built on last year's SP+ and returning production rather than either QB's hot start. With the model essentially neutral here (a pass), I don't think it's wrong so much as uninformative, the real signal in this game is coming from news and market flow the model structurally can't ingest.
The call, written up
Louisville at SMU, Louisville -1.5. The market has this as close to a coin flip as the slate offers, with the line holding near Louisville -1.5 to -2.5 all week and no clean move either way. SMU's Kevin Jennings has been outstanding, going 40 of 52 for 767 yards, and the Mustangs outgained Florida State by more than 250 yards despite four turnovers on the road. Louisville's Lincoln Kienholz has flashed big plays but is making roughly his third career start. The counter-case, from the dissenting panel: betting splits show 78 percent of the money on Louisville despite the public backing SMU, a sharp money signal toward the home side, and Louisville's Keyjuan Brown carries less injury risk than SMU's banged up running back room. Two of three panels still preferred the points. Take SMU +1.5 at DraftKings.
Over 59.5. The total has been bid up from 56.5 at DraftKings on September 1 and 53.5 at FanDuel on September 10 to 59.5 everywhere, largely on the back of two FCS blowouts. Strip those out and the real matchups still produced points, Louisville and Ole Miss combined for 79, SMU and Florida State for 51. The counter-case, from the dissenting panel, is SMU's defense, which has allowed just 17 points a game, and Louisville's receiver injuries. Two of three panels still favored points from two productive passing attacks. Take Over 59.5 at DraftKings.

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own.

The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
