Spread.Edge Labs makes Ohio State -46.1, 6.9 points below this price, but that model has no demonstrated ATS edge and its big-margin calibration can be unstable. The market’s case is obvious: Kent lost 57-0 at South Carolina, while Ohio State beat Ball State 56-3 and now returns home angry after blowing a 20-point fourth-quarter lead at Texas. Still, -53 demands near-perfect favorite execution after the starters rotate out. Starting RT Phillip Daniels and DE Zion Grady were trending unavailable Wednesday, modestly hurting Ohio State’s ceiling and depth. DraftKings’ Thursday split was extremely one-sided, 89% of bets and 99% of handle on Ohio State -52.5, yet the consensus stayed around -52.5/-53, which is at least resistance rather than confirmation. Kent’s Dru DeShields is a credible dual-threat backdoor mechanism. I take the seven-score cushion, cautiously.

Total.Under 59.5 is preferable to 58.5 and sits 7.3 points above Edge Labs’ 52.2 projection. The serious over case is that Ohio State scored 56 against Ball State, Ryan Day’s teams average 59.0 against MAC opponents, Kent allowed 57 at South Carolina, and the market lifted DraftKings/FanDuel totals two points from their openers. But this number can lose the side while winning the under: 52-3 or 56-3 works. Ohio State’s defense has allowed 27 points through two games, and Kent was scoreless against its only Power Four opponent. Daniels’ likely absence can slow the favorite marginally, and a huge second-half lead invites backups and a run-heavy clock. Mild, low-wind weather adds no under edge; this is a game-script and price play. Public consensus was 79% over, making the best available 59.5 useful.

Where our number looks wrong. The model likely underrates Ohio State's blowout ceiling: its -46.1 is dragged by a two-game refit and a final-margin-only framework, while Kent's 57-0 loss to South Carolina and Ohio State's 56-3 result against Ball State show this can land near the market. Conversely, its calibration stretches large favorites, so treating the 6.9-point gap as precise would also be wrong.

Spread. Our model's calibrated number is Ohio State -46.1 against a market of -52.6, a 6.5-point disagreement pointing at Kent State getting too many points, and this is a spot where I side with the model over the market. Numbers this large are hard to cover cleanly: once the Buckeyes build a five-touchdown lead they empty the bench and bleed clock, and Kent State scored 36 on Wofford (9/13) and reached 42 on Akron late last year, so this is not a zero-scoring offense that will get pitched a second shutout the way it did 0-57 at South Carolina (9/6). Ohio State is also down two front-seven/line rotation pieces (DE Zion Grady, RT Phillip Daniels both unlikely, Eleven Warriors 9/16), thinning the very units that force a giant cover. This is a lean, not a bet: an angry, healthy Sayin-led Ohio State off a one-point loss to Texas can bury a MAC bottom-feeder, so backdoor risk is real and I keep the number small.

Total. The structural case supports it: this projects as a one-sided blowout, and blowouts suppress totals because Ohio State will shorten the game with the run and clear the bench once up 30-plus, while Kent State's offense (0 points at South Carolina, and it needed an FCS opponent to reach 36) is unlikely to keep pace with over-friendly scoring. The market has crept up from ~56.5-57.5 at open to 58.5-59.5 now, so over money has already been paid; I am fading that move. Weather is a non-factor (74F, ~5 mph wind, 9% precip, Ohio Stadium outdoors) so it neither helps nor hurts the under. A moderate lean.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating reads only final margins and cannot see that Ohio State's field-tilting DE Grady and starting RT Daniels are likely out, nor that it is a noon bounce-back spot after an emotional loss; it also has no FCS/MAC-blowout garbage-time adjustment, so its raw margin (-46.1) understates how the Buckeyes' first-string ceiling could actually push toward the number before starters are pulled.

Spread. What news adds: OSU is missing two Texas-game injuries this week - RT Phillip Daniels (right leg) and DE Zion Grady (knee), both 'unlikely' per Eleven Warriors 9/16, with backups (VanSickle at RT, Atkinson/Russaw/Wilder at DE) stepping in untested together. Kent State also lists four skill/special-teams players as questionable, which mostly caps their already-bad offense rather than helping them. Covering 52.5+ for four quarters requires a clean, mistake-free blowout with a patched offensive line and defensive end rotation; Ryan Day has incentive to protect those spots once the game is decided. I lean the points on the buyback risk, not on Kent State winning the game.

Total. The total has climbed from 56.5-57.5 at open to 58.5-59.5 now, pricing in OSU's 39.5 ppg start and Kent State's 36 ppg-allowed defense. But Kent State's offense is the real drag: shut out 57-0 by South Carolina, four skill-position players questionable, and no verified reason to expect it suddenly moves the ball on a top-tier OSU defense (9.3-13.5 points allowed per game the last two seasons). With two projected starters (RT, DE) out, Ryan Day has extra incentive to shorten the game plan and pull starters early once it's decided, capping OSU's own back-half scoring. Weather (74F, 4.7 mph wind, 9% precip) is a non-factor either way.

Where our number looks wrong. The model is basically last year's/preseason profile refit on two games; it has no read on the two OSU front-seven/O-line injuries from the Texas game or on Kent State's four questionable skill players, and it can't see that this is being framed nationally as an emotional 'bounce-back' game after OSU blew a 20-point fourth-quarter lead. Those are exactly the kind of factors that can push a market number past what a rating-based model would produce, and also the kind that make a 52+ point cover mechanically hard to sustain for four quarters.

The call, written up

On the spread

Kent State at Ohio State, Ohio State -52.5. The line opened at -51.5 to -52.5 on Sept. 13-14 and moved to -52 to -53 by Sept. 17, with DraftKings showing 89 percent of bets and 99 percent of handle on Ohio State -52.5 while the number still held. The case for Ohio State covering: the Buckeyes beat Ball State 56-3 in Week 1, have averaged close to 59 points against MAC opponents under Ryan Day, and are coming off a blown 20-point lead at Texas that gives them incentive to get right at home. But Ohio State is missing starting RT Phillip Daniels and DE Zion Grady, both trending unavailable per Eleven Warriors on Sept. 16, thinning the front needed to force a clean cover, and Kent State scored 36 on Wofford behind QB Dru DeShields rather than looking like a lock for a second shutout after its 57-0 loss at South Carolina.

On the total

Under 58.5. The total climbed from 56.5-57.5 at open to 58.5-59.5 by Sept. 17 on over money, pricing in Ohio State's 56-3 opener and Kent State's 57-0 loss at South Carolina. The under case is game script: a lopsided score lets Ohio State run clock and pull starters, especially with RT Phillip Daniels and DE Zion Grady both unlikely to play. The counter is Ohio State's 56-point Week 1 output before backups enter. Weather at kickoff, 74 degrees with roughly 5 mph wind, is a non-factor. Take Under 58.5 (-104 at Sportsbook Review).

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
