Michigan at Minnesota. Pick: Minnesota +6. Pick: Under 43.5.
The call
The panelists
- Minnesota's official game center lists Michigan at Minnesota for October 3 at 11:00 AM local time and lists Drake Lindsey as the Gophers' passing leader with 951 yards.
- CBS lists the Michigan versus Minnesota opener as Michigan -8.5 and the current spread as Michigan -5.5, with the total from 44.5 to 43.5.
- The Big Ten maintains a 2026 football availability-report hub, but a game specific designation for this matchup was not verifiable in research.
On the spread. Michigan's defense has allowed 14.8 points per game through four games, and Minnesota's 35 point average includes Eastern Illinois and Akron. If Michigan's offensive issues were mainly matchup specific, the opener understated its class edge.
On the total. Minnesota scored 27 in its road win at Washington and has a productive passing leader in Lindsey. A clean weather window or short fields could make 43.5 too low, especially because Michigan's UTEP game showed its scoring ceiling.

Spread.Market first: Michigan opened between 6.5 and 8.5 points and was cut to 5.5 after its one point loss at Iowa and Minnesota's road win at Washington. That is a credible repricing of Michigan's low scoring offense and Minnesota's improved current form, rather than an obvious overreaction. Our model's Michigan by 8.6 disagrees, yet its documented 12.7 point margin error, final score inputs and flat home field make it insufficient reason to fade the move. This is a Minnesota lean, not a bet, because no Week 5 Big Ten availability report or definitive quarterback and depth update was verifiable on September 29.
Total.Market first: the total fell from 44.5 to 43.5, consistent with Michigan's 19-20 Iowa game and a matchup priced around a 24 to 19 score. The current weather picture is unsettled, with the captured forecast calling for 57 degrees and 10 mph wind while a later forecast query shows showers near kickoff. That supports an under lean at 43.5, but it is not a bet because Minnesota has exceeded this number in three of four games, the forecast is not stable, and no current availability report was verifiable. Our total model is higher at 45.47, but its 2.2 point difference is far inside its documented error and it does not account for pace, weather or injuries.
Where our number looks wrong. The model may be too high on Michigan after a final-margin refit and a uniform 2.5 point home field adjustment. It does not capture the market's three point correction following Minnesota's road result or any current availability news.
- CBS lists the Michigan versus Minnesota total opening at 44.5 and current total at 43.5.
- Minnesota's official game center lists QB Drake Lindsey with 951 passing yards through four games.
- BetMGM's live event page displayed a 43.5 total while the captured receipt remains the only pricing authority for this report.
- Whittingham injury updates before Minnesota: Babalola returns to practice one week from Monday, Frazier left Iowa game, Sprague missed two weeks, Daley and Nichols injured, possible move of Brady Norton to tackle
- Michigan opened -8.5 at DraftKings and moved to -5.5; SI notes Michigan outgained Iowa but went 2 for 4 in the red zone and allowed a special teams touchdown
- Minnesota drew 64 percent of sharp stake early in the week; analyst backs Minnesota +5.5
On the spread. Michigan's defense is elite by every efficiency ranking cited this week and held Oklahoma to 10; Minnesota's run game grades poorly and the Gophers scored 13 against the one strong defense they faced, Mississippi State, losing by 25. Michigan has won five straight and 11 of 12 in the series, and it outgained Iowa and lost on red zone failures and a special teams touchdown, which is noise that could regress.
On the total. Minnesota's offense has been efficient through the air with Lindsey throwing three touchdowns at Washington, Michigan's pass game produced 276 yards against Iowa, and a dry, light wind kickoff removes the weather support. Our model sits above the market at 45.5, and one defensive or special teams touchdown, as Iowa scored on Michigan, clears 43.5 easily.

Spread. The strongest explanation for the current number is a talent gap discounted by Michigan's offense (13, 17 and 19 points against its three FBS opponents), a first road trip under a first-year staff, and Minnesota's form after a 27-24 win at Washington with seven sacks. The news this week subtracts from Michigan: Kyle Whittingham said Monday he did not know where the team stood on injuries, right tackle Andrew Sprague has missed two weeks with an uncertain timetable, Andrew Babalola is not due back at practice until next week, Blake Frazier left the Iowa game, and edge rushers John Henry Daley and Dom Nichols are banged up. A thinned Michigan line against a Gophers front with seven sacks last week, in a game totaled at 43, makes points worth more. The three point move already prices much of this, so this is a lean on Minnesota +5.5, not a bet.
Total.Market first: 43 to 43.5, down from 44.5 at BetMGM and DraftKings, reflects two defenses that grade well and a Michigan offense that has scored 13, 17 and 19 against FBS opponents. Our model says 45.5, a gap of about two points, well inside its own error. Under case: Michigan's line is thinned and its offense lives on the run, Minnesota's run game grades poorly, the Gophers scored 13 against the only strong defense they have seen, and Michigan's games have totaled 25, 27 and 39 against FBS teams. Over case: Minnesota games have gone 66, 51, 48 and 51, Underwood threw for 276 against Iowa, and the weather is milder than feared: NWS on 9/29 shows only a chance of afternoon showers with light wind. The under is my side but only as a lean at 43.5.
Where our number looks wrong. Our rating (Michigan 12.2 vs Minnesota 3.0) is still carried largely by Michigan's preseason prior and blue-chip ratio. It does not see that Michigan's offense has produced 13, 17 and 19 points against FBS teams, nor the offensive line attrition (Sprague, Babalola, Frazier) that matters against a Minnesota front that just posted seven sacks. The flat 2.5 home field also ignores Minnesota being off a confidence win. I would shade our number closer to Michigan by 5 to 6, which is where the market is.
- Minnesota 27, Washington 24: Lindsey 21 of 29, 204 yards, 3 TD; seven sacks; Washington 1 for 10 on third down
- Iowa 20, Michigan 19 on last-play TD; Underwood 17 of 28, 276 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
- Covers analyst takes Michigan -5.5, citing a 44-4 series record since 1968 and Michigan's top-ten defense by SP+; Minnesota run game ranks 103rd in EPA per rush
- NWS Saturday: chance of showers after 1pm, partly sunny, high near 63, SSE wind 5 to 10 mph
- Covers leans under 42.5 citing Michigan top-ten SP+ defense and Minnesota havoc rate, projecting Michigan 23-17
- Michigan offensive line injuries: Sprague, Frazier, Babalola
- Michigan lost 20-19 to Iowa; Frazier and Daley injured in the game
- Michigan lineup absences vs Iowa and new injuries, article behind paywall for detail
- Opened Michigan 8.5 road favorite, moved to about 6.5 then 5.5; total 43.5 to 44.5
On the spread. Michigan has the better roster and defense, Underwood is a dual threat, and Minnesota's 35 points per game came against two weak opponents plus a Washington team; a healthy Michigan line still could win by a touchdown or more. A Michigan team angry after an 0-1 conference start is the obvious steam side.
On the total. Minnesota's offense has averaged 35 per game and scored 27 on the road at Washington, Michigan's line injuries could hurt its defense less than its offense, and Michigan has shown it can hit 52. Fatigue, turnovers or a short field could push it over 44.

Spread.Market first: Michigan is a road favorite of 5.5 because of talent (blue chip ratio far above Minnesota), a stingy defense (14.8 points allowed per game) and a road win over Oklahoma at the top of its schedule, while Minnesota's one real test was a 13 to 38 home loss to Mississippi State. That explains a Michigan number near a touchdown. What the market has already done is cut the opener from 8.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel to 5.5, so the news is largely priced. What still looks live: Michigan's offensive line is thin (Sprague and several linemen out for Iowa, tackle Frazier hurt in the game, edge Daley questionable), the offense scored 19 at home against Iowa and 13 against Western Michigan, and Minnesota just won at Washington. I lean Minnesota at plus 5.5 but do not have an incremental edge strong enough for a bet, and the line has already moved toward my side.
Total.Michigan games this year have finished 25, 27 and 39 combined points outside the UTEP blowout at 69, and the Iowa game ended 19 to 20. The defense allows 14.8 per game and a thin offensive line should limit a scoring offense that has been ordinary against real opponents. The over case: Minnesota scored 27 at Washington and Michigan's 52 against UTEP shows a ceiling, and 57 degree, light wind conditions do not suppress scoring. The total has slipped from 44.5 to 43.5 already. I lean under at 43.5 but the number is fair enough that this is a lean, not a bet.
- Michigan lost 20-19 to Iowa, low scoring for the third time in four games
- Total around 43.5 to 44.5 in the market, kickoff noon ET on FOX
The call, written up
Michigan at Minnesota, Michigan -5.5. The news leans Minnesota: Michigan lost 20-19 at Iowa on September 26, and Kyle Whittingham said Monday that right tackle Andrew Sprague has missed two weeks with an uncertain timetable, Blake Frazier left the Iowa game and edge rushers John Henry Daley and Dom Nichols are banged up. Minnesota won 27-24 at Washington that day. The counter-case: Michigan allows 14.8 points per game, Minnesota lost 38-13 to Mississippi State, and much of the move is already priced.
Under 43.5. Michigan's FBS games have totaled 25, 27 and 39, and its offensive line is thinned by injuries. Weather is mixed: our captured forecast is 57 degrees with 10 mph wind, while the NWS on September 29 shows a chance of showers after 1pm local and light wind. The counter-case: Minnesota games have totaled 66, 51, 48 and 51, and one defensive or special teams touchdown clears the number. Take Under 43.5 at -110 at BetMGM.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins.
