Keys to the game
  • Big Ten schools begin Saturday game availability reports on Wednesday, with later Thursday, Friday and gameday updates.
  • Michigan State’s official notes say Iamaleava is out for the season and identify Dieffenbach’s 22 of 33, 264 yard Wisconsin start.
  • UCLA’s official Wisconsin recap records the 17 to 7 result and Dieffenbach’s 264 passing yards.
What beats it

On the spread. UCLA’s defense can again suppress Michigan State’s modest offense, while Dieffenbach’s efficient debut may show that the quarterback downgrade is already fully absorbed, making UCLA’s move to 14 justified.

On the total. UCLA can continue to play behind its defense and run game with a new starter, and Michigan State’s offense may again fail to provide its share after scoring three at Wisconsin.

Spread.Market first: UCLA opened about 12.5 to 13.5 and was pushed to 14 despite the loss of Nico Iamaleava, reflecting its 6 to 0 start, Michigan State’s five game skid and UCLA’s defense holding Wisconsin to seven points in Ty Dieffenbach’s first start. That is a coherent adjustment, but it has also moved through the most valuable dog number. Michigan State’s official notes identify Alessio Milivojevic as its passing leader, while the secondary injury listing of Cam Fancher should not be treated as a confirmed change at quarterback. UCLA’s backup was productive against Wisconsin but the Bruins produced only 17 points, and a 14 point price leaves room for a competitive road performance after MSU lost its last two by one score. I lean Michigan State plus 14, not enough for a bet.

Total.Market first: the total fell from 47.5 to 44.5 across several captured books, a sensible response to Iamaleava’s season ending injury, UCLA’s 17 to 7 win with Dieffenbach, and Michigan State’s 3 point outing at Wisconsin. The move has already absorbed most of the obvious under case. The counterweight is that Dieffenbach threw for 264 yards in his first start, Michigan State’s last two games totaled 75 and 45 points, and the Rose Bowl forecast is clear and calm. I lean over 44.5 or 45 at the captured prices, with no bet because the backup quarterback sample is one game and the market move is substantive.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating’s UCLA number is inflated relative to an offense now led by a first time FBS starter, and its 17 point projection does not incorporate Iamaleava’s season ending injury or the resulting lower ceiling shown against Wisconsin.

More key facts
  • UCLA’s official recap records Dieffenbach’s 22 of 33, 264 yard first FBS start in a 17 to 7 win over Wisconsin.
  • A contemporaneous odds page showed an opening total of 47.5 and a current 44.5 price at major books.
  • The Rose Bowl forecast page describes benign, dry conditions with very light wind.

Keys to the game
  • Iamaleava ruled out of the second half at Oregon with a knee injury; ESPN reports him out indefinitely with no timeframe; backup Ty Dieffenbach
  • Dieffenbach to start against Wisconsin after Iamaleava's season-ending knee injury; UCLA's strength is a three-back running game
  • Michigan State availability report lists 14 players out, including QB Cam Fancher, RB Cam Edwards, CBs Bell, Brantley, Williams and Chappell, and LB Wheatland
What beats it

On the spread. For UCLA: Michigan State has lost five straight, scored 3 at Wisconsin, and is missing four cornerbacks, so even a conservative Dieffenbach passing game could find space and UCLA's defense (16.2 allowed per game) could hold the Spartans near 10. For Michigan State: UCLA has not topped 17 since week 4, and a run-heavy, clock-draining plan with a backup quarterback makes a 14 point margin hard to reach.

On the total. Michigan State's secondary is gutted, so UCLA could pass more and score 30 or more on its own, and the Spartans have shown they can hit 30 against weak defenses. A pick six or a short field from Michigan State turnovers would clear 45 quickly.

Spread.Market first: UCLA is 6-0 and ranked ninth, Michigan State is 2-5 with five straight losses, and the line has climbed from 12.5 to 14 at BetMGM and FanDuel since Sunday. That move came after Iamaleava's knee injury was known, so the market has already priced UCLA with Ty Dieffenbach at quarterback. The news cuts both ways. Michigan State listed 14 players out on its October 15 availability report, including four cornerbacks, two linebackers, two offensive linemen and its top two running backs, so it will struggle to stop anyone. But UCLA's offense has posted 17 points in each of its last two games, one with Iamaleava hurt early and one with Dieffenbach starting. Covering 14 with a backup quarterback and a run-first plan needs something like 27 to 13. Michigan State's depleted roster favors UCLA, while UCLA's capped scoring favors the points, and neither argument outweighs the other at 14. No view.

Total. The total opened 47.5 and has dropped to 44.5 to 45, so the market has already moved toward the under. Our totals model says 50.5, but it is built mostly on season-long offense and cannot see UCLA's quarterback change. Under: UCLA's last two games produced 32 and 24 total points, its defense allows 16.2 per game, and with a backup quarterback and a run-first plan the clock should keep moving. Michigan State's offense scored 3 at Wisconsin and 13 against Nebraska, and its running back room is thin. Over: Michigan State lists four cornerbacks out, which could let UCLA score in the 30s, and the Spartans scored 37 against Illinois. Clear, calm weather at the Rose Bowl takes nothing off. I lean under at 45, not a bet, because the move has already taken the best of the number.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating does not know UCLA lost its starting quarterback after week 6. Its in-season refit credits UCLA's full 6-0 run, and four of those six games were played with Iamaleava. The 17 point number overstates UCLA's scoring margin with Dieffenbach. On the other side, it also ignores Michigan State's long injury list, so the two blind spots partly offset.

More key facts
  • UCLA's passing game unspectacular; the plan is to simplify passing and lean on the running backs with Dieffenbach starting
  • Michigan State out list includes four cornerbacks and two linebackers

  • UCLA QB Iamaleava hurt in the Oregon game, serious knee concern, backup Dieffenbach took over
  • Dieffenbach 3 of 6 for 43 yards and a TD in his UCLA debut; Chesney called status week by week
What beats it

On the spread. UCLA's defense allows 16 points a game and won at Oregon and over Wisconsin without Iamaleava for most of the Oregon game; Michigan State has failed to score more than 24 in five of seven games and trailed by 28 or more twice. A big home win is quite possible.

On the total. Michigan State's defense allows 25 points a game and UCLA scored 45 or more three times; a blowout can reach 45 on its own.

Spread. The market explanation for UCLA -14: an undefeated, AP No. 9 home team at 6-0 with a plus 19 average margin, against a 2-5 Michigan State team that has lost four straight by an average of about 13. The price rose from openers of 12.5 to 14 even after the quarterback news. What the market may be underrating is that UCLA's offense changed: starter Nico Iamaleava is reported out for the season with a knee injury, and Ty Dieffenbach, who threw six passes against Oregon, is the replacement. The last two UCLA wins were 17 to 15 and 17 to 7, and the early blowouts came with Iamaleava. Laying two touchdowns with that offense requires the defense to score or dominate. Against that, Michigan State's offense is poor on the road and its own quarterback is questionable. I lean the visitor at 14 or better, but only as a small lean.

Total. The market total fell from 47.5 to 44.5 at three books, so the quarterback news is largely priced. Over case: Michigan State has played in shootouts (37-38 vs Illinois, 30-20, 35-7) and UCLA has put up 45, 52 and 54 earlier. Under case: UCLA's last two games produced 32 and 24 total points with a backup quarterback, clear weather with 3 mph wind means no weather effect, and Michigan State's road offense is struggling. A cautious UCLA run-heavy game plan with a new quarterback while leading shortens the game. I lean under at 44.5, a small lean only.

How to read this page

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
