Northwestern at Oregon. Pick: Northwestern +3.5. Our total call on this game opens with membership.
The call
The panelists
- Lanning does not anticipate Moore returning this season and named Jay Johnson to coordinate the offense.
- Chiles accounted for five touchdowns against Rutgers; Northwestern exceeded 500 offensive yards.
- Oregon outgained Illinois 426 to 314 but lost 21 to 10; Illinois rushed for 225 yards.
Johnson improves Oregon's scoring conversion without needing a wholesale offensive rebuild. If Northwestern remains without Fitzgerald and Fussell while Oregon regains receiving options, the Ducks can exploit the secondary. Northwestern's recent offensive output also came against Rutgers, while Braun acknowledged uneven defensive tackle play. Those considerations keep this a lean.

Spread. The strongest explanation for Oregon minus 3.5 is Autzen, its roster ceiling and an offense whose production exceeds its recent scoring. Oregon outgained Illinois 426 to 314 despite losing 21 to 10. That supports a rebound case under new coordinator Jay Johnson. Northwestern's case is more specific than taking points: Aidan Chiles supplied three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns against Rutgers, while Oregon surrendered 225 rushing yards at Illinois. Oregon also confirmed Monday that Dante Moore is not expected back this season. Our Oregon minus 1.5 provides context, but its unproven spread calibration cannot establish value. The captured DraftKings move from minus 7.5 on October 21 to minus 3.5 has already removed substantial Oregon premium; other books first appeared at minus 3.5. I pass on a unit because Oregon's yardage rebound case and Northwestern's secondary absences leave insufficient demonstrated mispricing after that adjustment.
Where our number looks wrong. The final-margin refit cannot distinguish Oregon's quarterback change from ordinary performance variation. Earlier Moore-led games can overstate current offensive strength, while the Illinois result understates the yardage Oregon produced. Its flat home adjustment also cannot establish Autzen's value here. I would not treat the two-point disagreement as an independently validated edge.
- Inside NU listed Fitzgerald, Fussell, Petrucci and Dehnicke out for Rutgers.
- Braun discussed Jon Jon Stevens replacing Fitzgerald and identified inconsistent defensive tackle play.
- The availability tracker lists Northwestern at Oregon as pending, with its first report expected Wednesday evening.
- Lanning says Dante Moore is not expected to return for the 2026 season
- Moore will not return this season from his concussion
- Raiola 6 of 19, two INTs vs UCLA and benched; Thomas 9 of 20, one INT vs Nebraska; Raiola expected to start at Illinois
Oregon's defense and roster talent are still far ahead of Northwestern's (blue chip ratio 0.60 vs 0.05), the Illinois loss came with Oregon outgaining Illinois 426 to 314, and a new play caller may simplify things for Raiola. Northwestern travels two time zones to Autzen and its one road loss to a good team (Indiana) came by six. If the Oregon offense normalizes, -3.5 is a cheap number on the home side.

Spread.Market first: Oregon -3.5 at home is the market saying Oregon still has the deeper, more talented roster and gets Autzen, but has been marked down hard for a broken offense. Dante Moore has been out since the September 26 USC game and Lanning said Monday he is not expected back in 2026. Since then Oregon has scored 15, 17 and 10 against UCLA, Nebraska and Illinois, rotating Dylan Raiola and Brock Thomas, and the offensive coordinator was fired with analyst Jay Johnson taking over play calling. DraftKings opened Oregon -7.5 on 10/21 and the whole market now sits at -3.5, so most of this is priced. Northwestern is 6-1, has won four straight, and Aidan Chiles accounted for five touchdowns against Rutgers. Our number is Oregon -1.5, two points shy of the market and pointing the same way, but it cannot see the quarterback situation at all, which, if anything, argues the rating already lags. I lean Northwestern +3.5: the side with the functioning quarterback getting more than a field goal. It is a lean, not a bet, because the move has already happened and a play caller change adds variance both ways.
Where our number looks wrong. The in-season rating has Oregon and Northwestern near level, but it learns only from margins and carries no quarterback adjustment. It still holds some preseason Oregon prior (26.2 preseason) built around Moore, so if anything it overstates the current Oregon offense. Its home field of 2.5 is flat; Autzen is usually worth more, which partly offsets.
- Oregon OC fired, analyst Jay Johnson calling plays; Raiola likeliest starter vs Northwestern
- Illinois beat Oregon 21-10 despite Oregon outgaining Illinois 426 to 314
- Northwestern 42, Rutgers 14; Chiles 219 passing yards, 83 rushing, five total TDs; Wildcats 6-1
- Oregon QB Dante Moore (concussion since the Sept. 26 USC game) was ruled out of the Oct. 24 Illinois game, his third straight missed game; Lanning gave no timeline and Dylan Raiola was the likely replacement.
- Evan Stewart (WR) also ruled out at Illinois on the Big Ten availability report.
If Moore returns cleared, Oregon is a materially better offense than the 10 to 17 point outputs suggest and 3.5 is cheap for a home team with far better talent, so Northwestern's schedule (Rutgers, Ball State, Michigan State by 3) would be exposed. Oregon's defense has held opponents to 20.7 per game.

Spread. The market has Oregon at home by 3.5, a short number for a program that was a heavy favorite against this same opponent a year ago. The strongest explanation for that price is Oregon's brand and Autzen against a Northwestern team that was 7-6 last year, balanced by Oregon's 4-3 record, three losses, and offense stuck at 10, 15 and 17 points in three of its last four with Dante Moore sidelined by a concussion. Northwestern is 6-1, ranked 20th, scoring 34.7 and allowing 16.6 per game, and just beat Rutgers 42-14. The line fell from 7.5 at DraftKings to 3.5 everywhere, so most of the correction is done. I still lean Northwestern with the points: the quarterback question is unresolved, but the number already prices an Oregon offense that has struggled, and 3.5 sits over the common margin of 3.
The call, written up
Northwestern at Oregon, Oregon -3.5. DraftKings opened Oregon minus 7.5 on October 21, while the captured market was Oregon minus 3.5 on October 27. On October 26, Oregon announced that Dante Moore was not expected to return this season and that Jay Johnson would coordinate the offense. Northwestern’s Aidan Chiles accounted for five touchdowns against Rutgers on October 24. The strongest countercase is Oregon’s 426 to 314 yardage edge in its October 24 loss at Illinois, plus a home setting and a new play caller that could improve its scoring conversion.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.
