Southern Utah at Colorado State. Our picks: Southern Utah +20.5 (medium). Under 56.5 (medium).

The picks come first on this page. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit under them as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. Tiers are how decisively the evidence agreed, never a win probability.

Panel reasoning

On the spread

Southern Utah at Colorado State, Colorado State -20.5. The line opened -20.5 at DraftKings and FanDuel and has been unchanged through the 9/10 capture, a confident number despite Colorado State's rough 2025. Colorado State blew out Wyoming 35-13 in Jim Mora's coaching debut, Hauss Hejny throwing 5 touchdown passes and the defense forcing interceptions. Our spread model has no number here, since Southern Utah is an unrated FCS side, so there is no model-versus-market edge to lean on. Southern Utah's offense is real: 514 total yards and 47 points on Weber State, Floyd Chalk and Will Burns combining for heavy rushing production, and a one-score, 28-21 loss at then-No. 2 Montana. The counter-case is that Colorado State's blowout could mark a genuine turnaround under Mora, and Southern Utah has also allowed 35 points a game itself this year. All three panels judged 20.5 points too many off one FBS sample. Take Southern Utah +20.5, unchanged at DraftKings and FanDuel.

On the total

Under 56.5. The total opened at 56.5 (DraftKings) and 57.5 (FanDuel) on 9/7-9/9 and stayed there through the 9/10 capture. Kickoff weather, partly cloudy with a high near 79-81F and roughly 12 mph wind, is not a factor. Southern Utah's ball-control style and Colorado State's takeaways both work against total possessions, and a 20.5-point mismatch raises the odds of second-half, backup-snap football that further suppresses scoring. Our totals model reads 53.34, 3.7 points under the market, but that gap sits below its own 12.86-point signal threshold, so it counts as a same-direction nudge rather than a confirmed lean. The counter-case is Southern Utah's explosive Weber State output, 514 yards and 47 points. Take the Under 56.5 at DraftKings.

Context, not a call. The spread number is our rating difference plus home field. The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

The panel

Panel A

Southern Utah +20.5

Under 57.5

Take Southern Utah +20.5. Edge Labs has no spread number here, so there is no measurable model-versus-market edge. My lean comes from the underlying opener performances: Colorado State benefited from three Wyoming interceptions, and its 22-point victory accompanied a more modest 5.9 to 5.2 yards-per-play advantage. Southern Utah’s productive quarterback rushing gives the underdog a plausible way to sustain possessions and stay within three touchdowns. The counterargument is substantial: SUU allowed Weber State 464 yards, and Hejny’s successful debut suggests CSU’s rebuilt offense can exploit that defense. Those positives are already public and partly reflected in the sizable favorite price. Captured book lines are unchanged; a secondary tracker reports an initial -21, insufficient evidence of meaningful sharp action. I could not verify betting splits, complete current depth charts, an official availability report, or fresh suspension updates. Last-game quarterback participation is confirmed; Saturday availability is not. These gaps keep this below a clear 60-confidence position.

Total. Under 57.5 is a small price-sensitive lean, 4.16 points above the model's 53.34, not a validated statistical edge. The strongest over case is SUU’s 514-yard performance alongside 464 yards allowed, plus Hejny’s five touchdown passes: explosive scoring on both sides is credible. The under case is that SUU’s rushing emphasis can consume clock, while CSU's three takeaway opportunities and five passing touchdowns need not repeat. SUU, Weber also included a blocked-punt touchdown and short-field scoring, making its 89 points an aggressive baseline. Weather does not justify a strong under: forecasts suggest warmth and only modest storm risk, with kickoff wind unconfirmed independently. I prefer the extra point at FanDuel over DraftKings' 56.5 and keep conviction near a coin flip.

Where our model looks wrong

The spread model cannot price SUU, and CSU's margin-only rating upgrade risks overvaluing a turnover-assisted final score. The totals model's 53.34 may be too low given SUU's current rushing production and CSU's quarterback change. Its documentation also contradicts itself: it claims no weather input while explicitly subtracting 2.38 points for wind. That adjustment needs auditing rather than another weather deduction.

Panel B

Southern Utah +20.5

Under 57.5

Our model has no number here (SUU is an unrated FCS side), so this is a market read. CSU (1-0) looked the part in the Jim Mora debut, thumping rival Wyoming 35-13 with Hauss Hejny throwing 5 TDs and the defense grabbing 3 INTs, and -20.5 vs an FCS team is a fair line on paper. But this is a classic backdoor spot. Southern Utah's identity is a high-volume, ball-control offense that moves the ball on anyone: 510 total yards and ~44 minutes of possession at No. 2 Montana (28-21 loss), then 514 yards and 47 points on Weber State. QB Will Burns is a dual-threat and RB Floyd Chalk is a physical, productive back (183 yds, 3 TD wk1). An offense that good, paired with FBS starters coming out once CSU pulls ahead, tends to find a late score and land inside three-plus touchdowns. I would rather have the 20.5 points with a live offense than lay them on a one-game FBS sample vs a weak Wyoming.

Total. Both offenses can score, so 57 is not a soft number, but the shape of this game points under. Southern Utah plays a grinding, ball-control style (they held the ball nearly 44 minutes at Montana), which suppresses total possessions for both teams even when yardage piles up. CSU's defense forced 3 INTs on Wyoming; extra takeaways shorten drives and kill scoring chances. Add the usual FBS-over-FCS pattern of the favorite easing off and emptying the bench with a big lead, and the scoreboard tends to stall in the second half. Our totals model also leans under (53.3 vs 57), though below its own 12.86 gap threshold, so I treat it as a nudge, not a signal. Weather is a non-factor: mild, mostly clearing evening, light wind. I take the higher number (57.5) for the under. Lean only.

Where our model looks wrong

The model produces no spread at all because the FCS side is unrated, so it offers zero read on a game where the market number (20.5) is the whole question. Its rating is also a preseason prior lightly nudged by one CSU game vs weak Wyoming; it cannot see that SUU fields a genuinely productive, clock-eating offense that raises the floor of the underdog, nor that CSU's blowout margin will be capped by pulling starters.

Panel C

Southern Utah +20.5

Under 56.5

CSU opened -20.5 at both DraftKings and FanDuel by 9/7-9/9 and it hasn't moved through the 9/10 capture, the market is confident. CSU looked sharp in Jim Mora's debut, blowing out Wyoming 35-13 with Hejny throwing 5 TDs and the defense forcing 4 turnovers (the-messenger.com, 9/6). But our own spread model carries no number here, SUU is an unrated FCS side, so there is no model-based edge to lean on, and the preseason CSU prior (-10.852, 3.66 expected wins) reflects a 2-10 2025 team that clearly undersold the Mora turnaround. Against that, SUU is not a pushover offensively: Floyd Chalk and Will Burns combined for 5 rushing TDs and 368 yards on the ground in a 47-42 win over Weber State, and SUU lost by only a touchdown at FCS No. 2 Montana (standard.net, 9/5). Mora himself called SUU's triple option 'very hard to prepare for.' Laying 20.5 off one FBS game, against a team that has shown it can move the ball and keep games close, is more number than the evidence supports. Take Southern Utah +20.5.

Total. Our totals model reads 53.34 against a 56.5/57.5 market (diff -3.7), but that's below its own 12.86-point lean threshold and it is still built mostly on CSU's dreadful 2025 offense (18.5 ppg), it hasn't absorbed the 35-point Mora debut yet. Context cuts both ways: SUU's offense has been explosive (368 rush yards, 47 points vs Weber State) and SUU's defense is soft (35 ppg allowed across two games), which argues for a shootout; but a 20.5-point FBS-FCS mismatch also carries real garbage-time risk, once CSU pulls away, expect run-clock offense and backup snaps that suppress the second-half total. Weather (79-81F, ~12 mph wind, ~20% precip) is a non-factor either way. On balance, side with the model's direction plus the blowout-compression pattern common in 20+ point FCS mismatches: Under 56.5.

Where our model looks wrong

Two issues. First, the model has no number at all for this game because SUU is FCS/unrated, so it offers zero read on what is likely the largest lean of the week. Second, even the preseason CSU prior (-10.852, first-year head coach, 3.66 expected wins) is already stale after one game, Mora's Rams looked like a different team beating Wyoming 35-13 and earning Hejny a Pac-12 Player of the Week nod, and the in-season refit (-6.477) still hasn't caught up because it is only one data point deep.

Confidence: medium

Three independent analyst panels (A, B and C) worked the same evidence pack and the week's news independently, each returned a side, and each then ranked its five strongest picks for the week. Every panel was on this side. Medium is a decisiveness label for how firmly the panel agreed, never a win probability: high means every panel was on this side and ranked it among the week's best; only high picks count on the record and go free.

Conditions at kickoff

Partially cloudy. 79F · wind 12 mph · 13% chance of precipitation

Provenance: schedule and finals from the Edge Labs database (2026 season); the line is the latest capture for this game with the book named; our number is the EL rating read (in-season once a team has played, preseason before that) plus 2.5 home field, none at neutral sites, and it is context on this page rather than the call. Signals come from the trend engine, each with its real sample; a tier is how decisively the evidence agreed and is never a win probability. Once the game kicks off this page stops computing and reads our pick lock ledger instead: the pick and the spread we were locked at, written once at kickoff, never updated, graded against that same number. Line movement comes from our permanent capture log, one book across both ends and never a capture taken at or after kickoff, so the second number is the last pregame line and after kickoff it is the close; a game the log has captured only once shows no movement rather than an invented one. Weather is the captured forecast for the venue, and the chip appears only when it is worth saying (wind at 12 mph or more, a 50 percent or better chance of rain, or 35F or colder), never on an indoor venue. Injury counts are our latest daily scan, real report rows only, and a team the scan does not cover is left out rather than shown as zero. The write-up is assembled from those same stored rows, never written around them: the case comes from the lock row, the signals from the trend engine with their own samples, the series from our game database from 2013 forward, and the scoring profiles from completed games only, each with the number of games it averages. A section with no data behind it is left out instead of filled in, it refreshes while the game is pregame, and it can never be edited once the game has kicked off. Trends are descriptive only, computed by the same shared module the write-up uses so the two cannot disagree: straight-up splits come from completed games in our database, situational splits look back three seasons and need at least eight decided games, records against the number and on the total arrive with the closing-line restore, and every line carries the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of them enter the confidence read. The totals block is a read and not a pick: our number is EL CFB Totals v1 (edgelabs.el_cfb_totals, season 2026, model_version v1, docs/el-cfb-totals-v1.md), a registered candidate that loses to the closing total, so it never posts to the board or the record; the market total beside it is the same capture the spread comes from before kickoff and the frozen consensus the model priced against after it, and the gap is measured against whichever number is printed. The totals trends under it are the trend engine's own rows for this game, deduped on the headline, each carrying its sample. On the games the analyst panel works each week (the games our model prices off the market plus the ranked and Power Four games, at most twenty), the pick and the total call are the panel's synthesis: three independent analyst panels, the same evidence pack, their own research, one side each, tiered by how firmly they agreed, never a win probability. A panel majority on a side is what makes a pick; without one the game is a published no-pick, printed as No pick rather than left blank. Research and context, never a guarantee, 21+.
