Spread.Take North Texas +3, available at BetMGM through the refreshed odds screen. EL makes UNT a 5.1-point favorite, but that eight-point disagreement substantially overstates the evidence. Texas State outgained UTSA 481 to 398 despite losing; UNT’s 38-point win included four takeaways and a goal-line stand. Final-margin ratings miss those distinctions. Nevertheless, UNT’s 6.6 yards per play versus 4.2 allowed against UNLV provides support beyond the scoreboard, and taking three offers protection in a competitive matchup. Sparks’ uncertain availability slightly favors UNT, although his absence last Saturday was public before these lines opened and should already be partly priced. The counterargument is Texas State’s productive running game and continuity against a rebuilt visiting roster. I put this much closer to the market than EL’s number and prefer the underdog only modestly. Captured spreads have been stable; I verified no credible betting splits or overlooked late-breaking availability advantage.

Total.Under 63.5 is the stronger lean. EL’s 67.5 projection relies heavily on prior offenses, especially a North Texas attack whose coach and major producers departed. UNT ran 38 times in 67 plays against UNLV; that supports a possible clock-consuming script, though one lopsided game cannot establish season-long tempo. Sparks’ uncertain status adds downside to Texas State’s passing ceiling. The over case is credible: Texas State just generated 481 yards, UNT averaged 6.6 yards per play, and benign weather permits explosive offense. BetMGM’s captured rise from 62.5 to 63.5 also argues against ignoring scoring potential. Still, extrapolating UNT’s 44 points without its four takeaway opportunities is risky. I shade below the market, with moderate conviction because productive rushing can also create quick touchdowns.

Where our number looks wrong.UNT -5.1 is too aggressive given roster turnover and two volatile results. The margin-only update rewards a turnover-assisted rout and penalizes Texas State despite its yardage advantage against UTSA. The totals model also carries too much historical offensive identity: Eric Morris, Drew Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins and Wyatt Young moved to Oklahoma State, confirmed by Oklahoma State Athletics on 2026-02-04. Neither model justifies treating the apparent gap as a proven betting edge.

Spread. The market is treating these teams as even on a neutral field. I do not think they are. North Texas beat UNLV 44-6 on 9/12 with 444 yards, four takeaways and four sacks against a defense that had not allowed more than 27 all year - that is a complete performance, not an opponent no-show. Texas State is 0-2 and its passing game is broken: Brad Jackson threw two interceptions for 192 yards against UTSA while receivers Beau Sparks and Zechariah Sample sat out, and the kicker missed a 26-yard field goal and an extra point in a four-point loss. Preseason SP+ had North Texas at plus-13.8 and Texas State at plus-2.3, so the market's pick-em read requires discounting the entire Neal Brown rebuild on one blowout loss at Indiana. Our number says North Texas by 5.1 and I agree with the direction if not the size. The real risk is the ground: Texas State ran for 248 yards on UTSA and North Texas is 117th nationally in third-down defense.

Total. Our ridge's 67.5 is the least trustworthy number in this dossier. It is fit mostly on prior seasons, and both offenses have changed identity: North Texas scored 45.1 a game in 2025 under Eric Morris and now has a first-year head coach, 49 transfers and 2.5 percent returning production, while Texas State's passing game produced 192 yards and two interceptions in its only competitive game. The 2026 evidence points lower than 63.5. Texas State has scored 7 and 26; North Texas's 44 came against a UNLV team it also stripped four times. Both teams are winning on the ground - 248 rushing yards for Texas State, 124 on 12 carries for Jahiem White - which is clock-burning football. I get roughly North Texas 31, Texas State 26. The over case is real: 95 degrees, sunny, no wind, and a Texas State defense allowing 45 a game.

Where our number looks wrong. Our plus-5.1 is directionally right but too big, and for a reason that cuts both ways. The in-season refit moved North Texas from a plus-1.431 preseason prior to plus-4.512 after two games, which means the 44-6 win did most of that work - one home blowout of a team that then looked broken is thin evidence for a roster with 49 transfers and no shared history. The rating also cannot see that this is North Texas's first road trip to a competitive FBS venue under a new staff, at 11am local in 95-degree heat, which is exactly the spot where a rebuilt team looks worse than its rating. On the other side, the model is blind to Texas State's two missing receivers and its kicker, both of which the market has probably underweighted too. Fair here is North Texas by about 2 on a neutral field, so roughly pick-em to plus-1 on the road, not plus-5.1. That leaves a point or two of value at plus-3, not eight, which is why this is a 58.

Spread. Our model likes North Texas by roughly 5 points on a neutral canvas, while the market currently has Texas State favored by about 2.5-3 (consensus has held near -3 since opening on 2026-09-13). That's an 8-point gap, though only our own 'Lean' and the model carries no demonstrated ATS edge. An independent 2026-09-13 handicapping preview (blog.youwager.lv) reaches the same side from different math, projecting North Texas 34-31 and backing North Texas +2.5 on the road. Texas State is 0-2 and has been outscored 90-33, including a 59-7 loss at Texas, with a defense allowing 45 ppg through two games. North Texas answered a 52-16 Week 1 loss at Indiana with a sharp 44-6 win over UNLV, QB Tayven Jackson going 23-of-29 for 215 yards and 2 TDs plus a rushing score. I'll back the visitor, though the model's own weak gap size caps how hard I lean.

Total. Both offenses are live and both defenses are shaky. Texas State ran for 289 yards on 50 carries (5.8 ypc) against UTSA even in a loss, and its defense has allowed 45 ppg through two games; North Texas is averaging 30 ppg with Jahiem White scoring twice on the ground in Week 2. Weather is a non-factor per the captured forecast: clear, 85F, with only 5.9 mph wind. With two defenses that have struggled to stop the run in a Saturday noon kickoff in Texas heat that could wear down whichever unit tires first, I lean Over.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating still leans on 2025 numbers and preseason priors (Texas State was 7-6 a year ago with much stronger scoring margins) and hasn't fully absorbed how bad Texas State's defense has looked in 2026 (45 ppg allowed) or that North Texas is running a true offseason reset (portal net +16, but only 2.5% returning production) that looked lost against Indiana but sharp against UNLV. Two games is thin signal for either team, and the model can't see any in-state rivalry or extra-motivation factors for either Group of 5 program.

On the spread

North Texas at Texas State, Texas State -3. The line opened at -3 across most books on September 13 and has not moved, with FanDuel a half point shorter at -2.5. Texas State is 0-2 and outscored 90-33, including a 59-7 loss at Texas, and lost two starting receivers to injury on September 12 while a missed field goal and extra point turned a four-point loss into what could have been a win. North Texas answered a 52-16 loss at Indiana with a 44-6 win over UNLV on September 12, Tayven Jackson passing for 233 yards and two touchdowns. Our model has North Texas favored by 5.1, an 8-point gap the panel treats as a weak lean rather than proven edge, since one blowout is thin evidence for a 49-transfer roster reset. The counter-case is Texas State's run game, which gained 289 yards on the ground against UTSA, and North Texas's weak third-down defense. Take North Texas +2.5, or +3 at BetMGM and DraftKings.

No call on the total

No total pick. The dissenting panel ranked the over in its top five, noting both defenses have been shaky, Texas State allowing 45 points a game, and clear, 85 degree weather with light wind offering no resistance to scoring. No pick on the total.
