Keys to the game
  • SDSU’s Sept. 30 update reported 14 confirmed mumps cases and one probable case within a single athletic team, without naming athletes.
  • Sutton and Kinnard were reported questionable for Texas State after their injuries at Toledo.
  • Jackson threw five first-half touchdowns and Burgess rushed for 140 yards against UIW.
What beats it

On the spread. The move from Texas State -2.5 to -4.5 or -5 has already priced SDSU’s poor form, quarterback questions and much of the injury concern. If the affected athletes are largely outside the football rotation and either running back returns effectively, home field and Texas State’s weak defense make -5 expensive.

On the total. Texas State’s offense has generated consecutive 600-yard games, SDSU’s defense allowed 41 at Toledo, and clear, hot conditions provide no conventional weather brake. A healthy enough SDSU skill group and Texas State explosiveness can clear this number.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market first: Texas State moved from roughly -2.5 to -4.5 or -5 because SDSU is 1-3, just lost 41-16 at Toledo, has a sputtering quarterback situation, and may be without both primary running backs. That explanation is credible and much of the generic form edge is gone. I would still lay the FanDuel -4.5. The incremental issue is SDSU’s Sept. 30 update reporting 14 confirmed mumps cases and one probable within a single athletic team, while the school will not identify athletes. That follows specific uncertainty at both running backs and makes an already compromised offense thinner. Texas State’s starting quarterback and featured runner were productive in the Sept. 26 win, though that result came against FCS UIW and must be discounted. Our 7.2 Texas State model number supports but does not create the play.

Total. The under is a lean at 59.5, not a bet. SDSU has quarterback instability, both primary backs are unresolved, and the Sept. 30 outbreak creates further offensive personnel uncertainty. The strongest over case is substantial: Texas State has produced consecutive 600-yard games, SDSU allowed 41 at Toledo, and a sunny, hot day creates no wind or rain impediment. Texas State’s most recent 63-point output was against FCS UIW, so it is not enough by itself to erase the under case. I would accept the captured 59.5, but the unverified availability distribution prevents a normal-unit position.

Where our number looks wrong. The model’s 7.2 Texas State number is not a standalone edge and may overread a 63-10 FCS result. Its calibrated number also conflicts with its raw home margin, so the market and verified availability carry more weight.

Keys to the game
  • SDSU football mumps outbreak up to 14 confirmed and 1 probable case; coach declined to name players
  • Sutton and Kinnard injured at Toledo; SDSU rushed for 48 yards and was out-gained 494 to 296
  • SDSU three offensive line lineups in four games; Texas State 523.3 yards per game
What beats it

On the spread. San Diego State had a top defense in 2025 and is home in its first Pac-12 game, with a late 7:30 pm local kickoff and a Texas team traveling two time zones. Texas State's pass defense is the worst in the Pac-12 by yards allowed and it is poor on third down, so if Denegal gets time the Aztecs can move the ball through the air. If Sutton and Kinnard both play and the mumps cases are mostly reserves, the true number is closer to 3 to 4 and this bet is only a small edge. Texas State has also been beaten badly by the best team it played. Public touts have already backed Texas State, so part of the value may be gone.

On the total. Texas State is scoring freely against everyone but Texas, San Diego State's defense has regressed badly, Texas State's pass defense is the worst in the conference, and a short field from Aztec turnovers could push this into the 60s quickly. Sean Lewis offenses have played fast historically, which adds possessions.

Spread.Market first: Texas State opened near 3.5 and has been bet to 4.5 to 5.5 because San Diego State is 1-3, 0-4 against the spread, and has scored 10, 13 and 16 in three FBS games while Texas State averages 523 yards per game. Our number makes Texas State a 7.2 point favorite, so the model and the move agree, and the market is still cheaper than our number by about two points. Our rating has no proven edge, so the case rests on the news. The news is all one direction and it is still getting worse after most of the move: the Aztecs lost their top two running backs, Lucky Sutton and Javion Kinnard, early at Toledo and both are questionable, the offensive line has used three different lineups in four games, and the university said on 9/30 that the team's mumps outbreak has grown to 14 confirmed cases and one probable, with no names released. Texas State's run defense is second in the Pac-12, which fits badly for an Aztec offense that ran for 48 yards at Toledo. I take Texas State at 4.5 as a standard bet and would still play it at 5.5.

Total.Over case: Texas State games have landed on 66, 57, 84 and 73, its offense gains 523 yards per game, San Diego State's defense has allowed 28.8 per game, and the weather is clear and 84 degrees with light wind. Under case: San Diego State has scored 10, 13 and 16 against FBS teams and now may be without both lead running backs and an unknown number of players with mumps, so the home side may need Texas State to carry nearly 40 by itself. Texas State's run defense is strong, which pushes the Aztecs into a passing game led by a quarterback with five interceptions. I lean under at 59.5 because the Aztecs' scoring floor is low, but a Texas State blowout alone can get this over, so it is a lean, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. The in-season rating still leans on a preseason prior that had San Diego State as a 7.6 win team built on a 2025 defense that allowed 15.4 points per game. That defense has allowed 28.8 this year, and the rating cannot see the running back injuries, the line shuffling or the mumps outbreak, so if anything our 7.2 understates the gap today. Texas State's 7-59 loss at Texas also drags its rating down more than it should for a Pac-12 road game.

What beats it

On the spread. San Diego State is at home and its 2025 defense was strong; Texas State lost 59-7 at Texas and allowed 35 to North Texas, its 63-10 win came against an FCS opponent, and its own receivers are questionable. Desert travel on a late kickoff and a possible half-point move make laying five unattractive.

On the total. Texas State can reach 40 on its own, SDSU defense has allowed 26 or more in three straight games, and a late desert kickoff in clear weather gives no help to the under.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The market explanation comes first: Texas State is laying 4.5 to 5 on the road because San Diego State lost its two top running backs, Sutton (high ankle sprain) and Kinnard (knee), at Toledo, both listed questionable, and the Aztecs have lost three straight by 18, 13 and 25 after a Portland State opener. The number has moved from Texas State -2.5 to -3.5 at open to -4.5 to -5.5, so the injury news is largely priced. What the price may still miss is how thin the Aztec offense is: a backup quarterback already lost to a broken collarbone, Denegal pulled late at Toledo after a pick-six, and a run game that just got shut down. Texas State scores 36 per game and can move the ball, though its defense is leaky and its receivers are banged up.

Total.Over case: Texas State averages 36 points and allows 34, and SDSU allowed 41 at Toledo, so the Bobcats can score freely in clear 84F weather. Under case: SDSU scores 23 per game and is now without its top two backs and thin at quarterback, which should slow its offense and shorten drives, while Texas State's 63 points came against an FCS team. The 59.5 already prices Texas State's scoring.
