Keys to the game
  • Hejny practiced fully October 19, and Mora said he would start against San Diego State.
  • Denegal left the Fresno State game injured and Saunders replaced him.
  • CSU's official game-week release lists an offense at 445.3 yards per game, SDSU at 292.9, and both defenses in the bottom 10 percent nationally.
Ace's case for Colorado State and Under 63.5

Spread.Market first: the move from San Diego State -2.5 to -3 toward -1 to -1.5 is best explained by Colorado State quarterback Hauss Hejny returning to full practice and being named the planned starter, paired with San Diego State starter Jayden Denegal leaving Saturday's game injured. The current near-pick'em has already absorbed much of that information. I lean to CSU +1.5 because Hejny's early production was materially better than the backup's and Denegal has not been cleared, but this is too small a cushion to bet before SDSU supplies a practice or availability update. Our model's CSU +5 is directionally supportive only and its documented ATS record does not turn that gap into an edge.

Total.Market first: the four-point rise from 59.5 to 60.5 into 63 to 63.5 correctly reflects two poor defenses, CSU's 445.3 yards per game, and the expected return of Hejny. That makes the over case real, rather than a blind reaction to high recent scores. I still lean under 63.5 because the price now assumes a fully functional CSU passing game and discounts SDSU's unresolved quarterback injury. SDSU's most recent game finished 26-23 despite 204 rushing yards, and the forecast is cool for kickoff.

Where our number looks wrong. The calibrated model makes CSU a 5-point underdog despite its raw home margin pointing the other way. Its final-margin inputs omit the quarterback changes, so the current injury news makes that calibrated spread especially hard to trust.

What beats it

On the spread. If Denegal practices and starts effectively, or if Hejny is limited after the hamstring absence, the market's move has likely exhausted the CSU value and SDSU's rushing offense becomes the cleaner matchup advantage.

On the total. Hejny's stated return, CSU's productive offense and the combined defensive weakness can produce the kind of efficient game the market anticipated, especially if Denegal also starts.

More key facts
  • Line tracking shows the spread moving from SDSU -3 to -1 and the total rising from 60.5 to 64 during October 18 to 19.
  • CSU reported both defenses are in the bottom 10 percent nationally, CSU averages 445.3 yards per game and SDSU averages 292.9.
  • SDSU's 26-23 win featured Denegal leaving injured, Saunders taking over, and 204 SDSU rushing yards.
  • Hejny fully practiced October 19 and was identified by Mora as Saturday's planned starter, while Vick remained a potential game-time decision.
  • Total tracking shows a rise from 60.5 to a sequence reaching 63 to 65 on October 18 to 19.

  • Farrar will not start in Week 8 vs San Diego State, per TheDNVR.
  • Denegal left with an ankle injury in the second quarter vs Fresno State, x-rays negative; Saunders 6 of 11 for 61 yards; Sutton 110 yards on 18 carries.
Stack's case for San Diego State and Under 63.5

Spread.Market first: San Diego State opened a 3 point favorite and has been bet down to 1 to 1.5. The strongest explanation is quarterback news on both sides. Colorado State gets Hauss Hejny back from a hamstring injury that cost him most of four games, and San Diego State lost Jayden Denegal to an ankle injury against Fresno State, with freshman Stone Saunders (6 of 11 for 61 yards in relief) reported as the likely starter. That move is fair, and it is roughly the size of a starting quarterback swap at this level. Our number makes San Diego State a 5 point favorite, but it sees neither quarterback change, so most of its 3.7 point gap is already explained by news it cannot read. What keeps me on San Diego State as a lean is matchup: Colorado State has allowed 41, 59, 56 and 66 in four straight losses, gave up a school record 503 rushing yards at Texas State, and changed defensive coordinators midseason. San Diego State is a run first team that just got Lucky Sutton back (110 yards on 18 carries) and its defense held Fresno State to 276 yards. A ground game should travel with a freshman passer. It is a lean at a short number, not a bet.

Total.Market first: the total climbed from 59.5 to 61.5 at open to 63 to 63.5 now, and the best explanation is Hejny's return to a Colorado State offense facing nothing it fears, plus a Rams defense that has allowed 41 or more in four straight games. Colorado State games have averaged nearly 79 points. The under case rests on the other side: San Diego State scores 23.3 per game, has been held to 16 or fewer in three FBS games, and is likely starting a freshman quarterback in his first start on the road. With Sutton healthy, the Aztecs should lean on the run, shorten the game and keep their own total low. A 53 degree evening with wind near 11 mph trims a little more. Our model's 58.4 agrees in direction, but the market has moved the other way, so this stays a lean.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating does not know San Diego State is likely starting a freshman quarterback or that Colorado State gets its starter back, so its SDSU -5 overstates the Aztecs by most of the 3.7 point gap. It also leans on SDSU's 2025 profile (15.4 points allowed per game) when the 2026 defense has allowed 33.3 per game, and it does not see Colorado State's midseason defensive coordinator change.

What beats it

On the spread. Hejny is a dual threat starter who led the Rams to their two wins, Colorado State has had nine days of rest since a Thursday game, the home altitude favors the Rams, and SDSU's offense has scored 16 or fewer in three of its five FBS losses even with Denegal. A freshman making his first road start, plus a reported mumps issue in the SDSU program, could leave the Aztecs unable to score enough to win, and if Denegal's status is unclear all week the line could keep drifting toward Colorado State.

On the total. Colorado State's defense is bad enough that even a freshman led SDSU could score 30 or more on the ground, while Hejny gives the Rams a functioning offense against an SDSU defense that allowed 66 to Oregon State and 41 to Toledo. Sean Lewis runs an up tempo system, and turnovers by an inexperienced quarterback could hand Colorado State short fields. The 4 point move up is real money and may be right.

More key facts
  • SDSU 3-4, 2-1 Pac-12; allowed 276 yards vs Fresno State, fewest of the season; Sutton missed three of four games before returning.
  • Texas State rushed for 503 yards and 716 total in a 66-27 win over Colorado State; Farrar started for the injured Hejny.
  • SDSU opened as a 3 point favorite at DraftKings; SDSU has dealt with key injuries and a mumps infection.
  • Texas State 66, Colorado State 27; 503 rushing yards allowed, most ever by a CSU defense.
  • Denegal out of the Fresno State game with an ankle injury; Saunders 6 of 11 for 61 yards in relief.
  • Hejny will start for Colorado State vs SDSU.
  • Forecast high around 63 and partly cloudy per the Weather Channel as of Oct 19.

Buck's case for Colorado State and Under 63.5

Spread. The market moved from San Diego State -2.5 or -3 at the open to -1 to -1.5 now, a number that treats two weak sides as near equals with a small home-field credit to Colorado State. The strongest case for that number: SDSU is 3-4 with a 14-66 road loss at Oregon State and an offense that scored 26 or fewer in five of seven games, while CSU is 2-4 with a 27-66 loss at Texas State and a defense allowing 43.2 per game. The move toward the home side suggests the market is pricing SDSU quarterback J. Denegal, who left the Fresno State game hurt (ankle, x-rays reported negative), and Colorado State's first-year-coach home spot. Both quarterback rooms are unresolved: CSU's Hejny has a hamstring designation and SDSU's Denegal is questionable, with a freshman who finished the Fresno game as the alternative. I could not verify either status this week, and a line this close with both quarterbacks uncertain gives no price edge to either side.

Total. The total rose from 59.5 to 61.5 at open to 63 to 63.5 now, a rise driven by two porous defenses: CSU allows 43.2 per game and SDSU 33.3. The over case is real, since CSU games this year totaled 48, 82, 64, 104, 82 and 93 and neither defense has stopped anyone good. The under case: SDSU's own games totaled 73, 38, 39, 57, 60, 80 and 49, so its typical game is far below this number, its offense scored 26 or fewer in five of seven games, and the 80 came from a 66-point blowout. A hurt quarterback on either side shortens drives, and wind near 11 mph with 53F is a mild drag. After a 3.5 point rise I lean under at a captured 63.5 or better, as a lean only.

What beats it

On the spread. Colorado State at home as a near pick'em could be a lean on the home side, but its defense gave up 66 at Texas State and the Hejny hamstring has lingered for weeks. San Diego State has won two of its last three and has a rivalry-style close win, but it was blown out 14-66 on the road at Oregon State.

On the total. CSU games have averaged about 78 total points and its defense cannot get stops; if both quarterbacks play and the SDSU backup passes more, 64 is easy to reach. The late-October altitude and a bad CSU defense also support the over.

On the total

Under 63.5. San Diego State's games have totaled 73, 38, 39, 57, 60, 80 and 49, and it may start a freshman. The counter-case: Colorado State games have totaled 48, 82, 64, 104, 82 and 93, and both defenses rank in the bottom 10 percent nationally (CSU release, Oct. 20). Take Under 63.5 at -110 at BetMGM.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
