Keys to the game
  • Fresno State held Washington State to 182 total yards, 30 rushing yards, nine first downs, five sacks and two turnovers in a 26-6 win.
  • Utah State’s official preview says its four losses came against opponents then a combined 15-4 and lists its schedule as 24th toughest through six weeks.
  • Utah State used Brosterhous as the starter and rotated Hillstead for most of the Boise State game.
What beats it

On the spread. Washington State’s reported reassessment of offensive duties produces a cleaner game plan, while Utah State’s continued quarterback rotation creates giveaways or stalled possessions, making the move from minus 1.5 to minus 5.5 an overreaction.

On the total. Clear, mild conditions and Utah State’s quarterback rotation can create more explosive offense than its season scoring average, while a WSU offensive reset or short fields can erase the value of 44.5 quickly.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market first: Utah State moved from roughly minus 1.5 to minus 5.5 because Washington State’s offense has become the matchup’s defining liability, while the Aggies’ poor record came through a substantially harder opening slate. The market has already charged a meaningful premium for that read, so this is only a lean at the captured minus 5.5. Fresno State held WSU to 182 yards, 30 rushing yards, nine first downs and no touchdown on October 3. Utah State then produced 18 points at Boise State with Grady Brosterhous and McCae Hillstead rotating, a more functional showing than its final margin suggests. The EL number, Utah State minus 1.1, disagrees, but its documented final margin only rating and flat home field treatment are poorly suited to price WSU’s fresh offensive changes and the Aggies’ schedule quality. The four point move means there is no normal unit case.

Total.Market first: the total was cut from FanDuel’s 46.5 opener to 43.5 after Washington State managed six points and no touchdowns against Fresno State. That adjustment is sensible, but the captured 44.5 under remains a modest lean because it is a full point above the lower captured market. The case is weakened by favorable weather and Utah State’s more productive 18 point showing at Boise State with two quarterbacks involved. EL’s 44.29 projection is essentially the market and adds no support. This is price selection, not a model driven wager.

Where our number looks wrong. The EL rating’s Utah State minus 1.1 is too forgiving of WSU’s October 3 offensive collapse and too willing to read Utah State’s early final margins without enough schedule context. Its flat 2.5 point home field is also a crude fit for a Friday conference opener.

More key facts
  • Fresno State held Washington State out of the end zone and allowed 182 yards, including 30 rushing yards, on October 3.

Keys to the game
  • Washington State 21 of 34 for 152 yards, sacked five times, one interception in 26-6 loss to Fresno State; Utah State favored by 5.5, total 44.5, moneyline WSU +168
  • Boise State 37, Utah State 18; Javen Jacobs 10 carries for 139 yards
  • Utah State 2026 results: L 17-29 Idaho State, L 14-16 at Washington, L 0-33 at Utah, W 21-10 Troy, L 18-37 at Boise State; starters Brosterhous and Hillstead
What beats it

On the spread. The move from -1.5 to -5.5 is the market correctly downgrading a Washington State offense that cannot protect Pinnick, and Utah State's run game (Jacobs 139 yards on 10 carries at Boise) can exploit a Cougar defense that allowed 34 to Kansas State and Arizona. Friday night at Maverik with a road team on a short week favors the Aggies, and if the line keeps rising the lean is simply on the wrong side of the steam.

On the total. Weak defenses on both sides, a clear mild night, and Utah State's explosive run game (Jacobs 139 yards on 10 carries) could produce big plays; turnovers from Pinnick (5 INT) and Brosterhous (6 INT) can hand short fields and inflate scoring. A 24-21 type game clears 43.5 easily.

Read Stack's full case

Spread.Market first: books opened Utah State -1.5 to -4 on 10/4 and every captured book now sits at -5 or -5.5. The best explanation is the Cougars' offense: 6 points against Fresno State with five sacks allowed, and only 47 points in four FBS games under first-year coach Kirby Moore and UC Davis transfer QB Caden Pinnick. Add a Friday night home game in Logan and the move makes sense. What I think the move overstates: Utah State is also 1-4, lost at home to FCS Idaho State 29-17, was shut out at Utah, and scores 14 points per game. Two bad offenses in a low total compress margins, which makes 5.5 a fairly wide number between near equals. That is a lean on Washington State +5.5, not a bet: the steam is against me and I have no availability edge.

Total.Over case: both defenses have leaked, Utah State allowed 29 to an FCS team and 37 at Boise, Washington State allowed 34 twice, and the forecast is clear and mild with light wind. Under case: the offenses are worse than the defenses. Washington State has scored 10, 7, 24 and 6 against FBS teams; Utah State has scored 17, 14, 0, 21 and 18. Their combined game totals average about 39 for Utah State and about 44 for Washington State including the Duquesne blowout. FanDuel opened 46.5 and was bet down to 43.5 while two books sit at 44.5. I lean under 43.5 at the cheaper price, not a bet, because the edge is small and both offenses could get healthier.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating still leans on Washington State's preseason prior (high returning production, prior SP+ 3.8), which does not see that the Cougars' new staff and FCS transfer QB have produced 6, 7 and 10 points in three of four FBS games and a leaky pass protection. The market moving four points against our direction is consistent with that blind spot, so I would not treat our -1.1 as the fair number; my own fair is closer to Utah State -4 to -4.5.

What beats it

On the spread. Washington State just lost 26-6 at home to Fresno State and was beaten by Kansas State and Washington, while Utah State beat Troy at home. The late move toward Utah State may reflect real information on quarterback or injury status that I could not verify, and a first-year coach staff with a thin skill group is a poor spot on the road on a short Friday week.

On the total. Defenses allowing 25 a game each and Utah State at home with clear weather could push scoring into the high 40s, and Washington State has shown it can score 48 against a weak opponent.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The market has moved Utah State from an opener of 1.5 to 4 up to 5 to 5.5 at home, so the explanation for the number is a home-field and recent-form story: Utah State beat Troy 21-10 at home while Washington State lost 26-6 to Fresno State at home. But both teams are 1-4 and both are bad on offense, 14 points a game for Utah State against 19 for Washington State, and Utah State was shut out 33-0 at Utah and lost 37-18 at Boise State. Washington State's only win is over Duquesne. With two weak offenses and a total in the low 40s, 5.5 points is a lot of cushion, and the move toward the home side looks like it has already priced the Fresno State result. I lean Washington State at plus 5.5 as a small lean only; I found no verified news this week that adds a real edge, and thin college availability data keeps this from being a bet.

Total. Both offenses are struggling: Utah State averages 14 points a game and was shut out at Utah, and Washington State averages 19 and scored 6 against Fresno State. The market total of 43.5 to 44.5 sits above what either recent output suggests, though the over case is that Washington State put up 48 on Duquesne and both defenses allow 25 a game, which points to scoring in the mid 40s from the defensive side. Weather is clear, 72 degrees and light wind, so it adds nothing for the under. The total opened 43.5 to 46.5 and has been steady at 43.5 to 44.5. I lean under at 43.5 as a small lean, not a bet, since the under case rests mostly on offensive form and I could not verify availability.

The call, written up

On the spread

The market moved from Utah State -1.5 to -4 at open to -5 and -5.5 after Washington State's 26-6 home loss to Fresno State on Oct. 3, but Stack and Buck argue the move overstates the gap between two 1-4 teams with weak offenses, since Utah State lost 29-17 at home to FCS Idaho State and was shut out 33-0 at Utah, and two struggling offenses in a low total compress margins. The number is Washington State +5.5 at -108 at BetMGM.

No call on the total

The under case is two poor offenses, with Washington State scoring 10, 7, 24 and 6 against FBS teams and Utah State not topping 21 points in a game, and FanDuel's total falling from 46.5 to 43.5. The over case is that both defenses have allowed about 25 points a game, the forecast is clear at 72 degrees with light wind, and our totals model at 44.29 sits on the market. No pick on the total.
