Keys to the game
  • Newberry identified Gutierrez as the starter and Woodson as day-to-day with a high ankle sprain.
  • UAB's defense held Louisiana scoreless with 108 yards in the second half.
  • Navy had a bye; UAB faces a short preparation week for Navy's hybrid offense.
What beats it

On the spread. Gutierrez may preserve enough offensive production after the bye that Navy's quarterback downgrade is overstated. UAB's offensive limitations could leave its defense repeatedly defending short fields, and preparing for Navy on a short week could overwhelm the recent defensive improvement. A healthier-than-expected Woodson further weakens the UAB case.

On the total. Gutierrez's relief performance suggests Navy can still generate explosive offense. Navy's pass defense presents an opportunity for UAB to rebound, and defensive or special-teams scores can again bypass offensive limitations. Woodson contributing effectively would raise the offensive ceiling. Mild, light-wind conditions offer no protection against those outcomes.

Read Ace's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for Navy laying approximately seven is its preparation advantage: Navy comes off a bye while UAB has a short week to prepare for its unusual offense, and UAB's offensive execution remains poor. The reduction from the captured double-digit openers plausibly incorporates Navy's quarterback change; attributing the entire move to that news would be speculation. Monday's reporting names Jackson Gutierrez the starter and describes Woodson as day-to-day, contradicting the dossier's definitive out designation. UAB's improving defense supplies the directional case: it held Louisiana scoreless after halftime, allowing 108 second-half yards. However, its own touchdowns came from a defensive return and a short field following a punt return. Our Navy -6.1 versus market -6.5/-7 offers little separation, especially from an unproven model. I lean UAB but would require +7.5 at -110. The current seven does not adequately compensate for UAB's offensive weakness and Navy's preparation advantage.

Total. The strongest explanation for 51.5 is that the market has discounted Navy's quarterback situation and UAB's weak offense. The under case is substantive: UAB's 14 points at Louisiana included a defensive touchdown and an offensive touchdown set up at the opponent's 12. Our 56.94 projection likely overstates continuity from prior offenses and defenses. The over deserves respect, however: Gutierrez produced 100 passing yards, 75 rushing yards and three combined touchdowns in relief at FAU, while Navy's defense conceded 386 passing yards. Benign weather supplies no additional under advantage. Captured totals already fell from 52.5 to 54.5 at several books to 51.5. DraftKings' heavy under handle describes positioning, not an independent edge. I lean under but require 53 at -110; I would not chase 51.5.

Where our number looks wrong. The final-margin model cannot distinguish UAB's defensive touchdown and short-field offensive touchdown from sustained offensive production. It also misses Navy's quarterback transition and the preparation imbalance. The dossier's first_year_head_coach=false obscures Mortensen's first full season in charge, while new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham further weakens continuity assumptions. These omissions pull in different directions; Navy -6.1 is not a reliable fair-price anchor.

More key facts
  • UAB described 2026 as Mortensen's first full season as head coach.
  • UAB appointed Todd Grantham defensive coordinator on January 7, 2026.
  • UAB's two touchdowns at Louisiana came from a defensive return and a possession starting at Louisiana's 12-yard line.
  • Gutierrez threw for 100 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 75 yards and one touchdown in relief.
  • FAU's Veltkamp passed for 386 yards and five touchdowns against Navy.
  • DraftKings showed total 51.5, under -112, with 96% of handle and 33% of tickets on the under.
  • Friday forecast calls for partly cloudy conditions, northeast winds 5 to 10 mph during the day, becoming light Friday night.

Keys to the game
  • Woodson will miss the UAB game; Gutierrez to start; line opened Navy -10, now -7
  • Woodson sprained left ankle, MRI no major structural damage, week-to-week
  • 88% of early money on Navy yet line fell from -10 to -7; total 53.5 to 51.5
What beats it

On the spread. If Woodson plays even at 80%, Navy's option against a UAB team that lost to Louisiana is worth more than 7, and Navy has beaten UAB by 25, 23 and 14 in the last three meetings. Gutierrez also nearly led a comeback at FAU.

On the total. Clean weather, a poor Navy secondary and a UAB defense that allowed 38.3 points per game in 2025; if Woodson plays, Navy's offense is 42 points against Towson and 30 at FAU.

Spread.Market first: this line has already absorbed the big news. Navy opened -10 to -11.5 and is now -7 (FanDuel -6.5) because starting quarterback Braxton Woodson, the engine of the option at 148 rushing yards per game, sprained his left ankle at FAU on 9/12. Picks and Parlays reports 88% of early money on Navy while the number fell, which reads as professional money on UAB. Reports conflict on Woodson: Yahoo (9/23) says he will miss the game and Jackson Gutierrez starts, while the Navy-side coverage calls him week-to-week and a game-time decision after an MRI showed no structural damage. Our number, Navy -6.1, is close to the market and does not know about the injury, so it cannot help. My lean is UAB at +7: Navy's pass defense ranks 125th in explosives allowed per Yahoo, UAB quarterback Ryder Burton can attack it, and a backup-led option team is harder to trust laying a touchdown on the road. But if Woodson plays, -7 is cheap for Navy, and that single unknown decides the bet. Pass.

Total. Our totals model says 56.9, but it has no idea Navy may be on a backup quarterback, and the market has moved the other way, from 53.5 to 51.5 with the under now the juiced side at -111 to -115. Picks and Parlays reports the drop came against heavy public over money. The under case is that a Gutierrez-led option runs clock, Navy's run defense is strong, and UAB's offense scored 26 and 14 in its last two. The over case is Navy's pass defense, 125th in explosives allowed, against a UAB quarterback who can throw, plus dry 84-degree weather with calm wind. I lean under, but at 51.5 with -115 on it, the move has taken the value. Pass.

Where our number looks wrong.Navy's rating is still mostly its prior (13.8% returning production) and knows nothing about the quarterback. Our -6.1 matching the market is a coincidence of two errors, not agreement: a low prior offset by an injury the model cannot see.

Keys to the game
  • ESPN's season stat leaders show Braxton Woodson with 296 rushing yards (4 TD, 35 carries) while backup Jackson Gutierrez has only 6/12 passing (100 yds, 2 TD) this season
  • Navy QB Braxton Woodson is listed Out - Ankle as of 9/15 and 'will miss an extended period'
What beats it

On the spread. If Gutierrez or another ball-carrier can replicate even 70% of Woodson's rushing production in Navy's option scheme (built around reads, not just one player), or if UAB's own offense (21.0 ppg, 27.7 papg allowed) can't consistently move the ball, Navy could still cover -6.5/-7 comfortably against a UAB team that lost to Illinois by 19 and to Louisiana.

On the total. If UAB's offense finds rhythm against a Navy defense that already conceded 38 points to FAU, or if Navy's ground game holds up via committee without Woodson, this total could clear 51.5 comfortably.

Spread.Navy opened as a 10-11.5 point favorite and has been bet down to 6.5-7 across every tracked book, the largest single-week spread move on this slate, driven by starting QB Braxton Woodson's ankle injury (out, 'extended period' as of 9/15). Woodson wasn't just Navy's passer; he was the offense's leading rusher (296 yards, 8.5 ypc, 4 TD through 2 games), which matters enormously in an option scheme where the QB's own carries are structural, not incidental. Backup Jackson Gutierrez has thrown only 12 passes all season and has no meaningful sample as the primary ball-carrier at that spot. The market has already priced roughly 4 points for this loss, a real and fairly rare admission, but it may still be light: losing your best rusher and your QB in the same body is a bigger structural hit than a standard backup-QB discount captures, and UAB (79.6% returning production, positive portal net) is a live enough home dog against a downgraded Navy attack. Standard stake, not a max unit, given the number has already moved this far.

Total.Total has also come down (FanDuel from 54.5 to 51.5, DraftKings from 53.5 to 51.5) alongside the spread move, tracking the same Woodson-injury news, so I don't see a fresh inefficiency here the way I do on the spread. Navy's offense loses its most productive rusher and lead option-QB threat, which argues for fewer Navy points, but UAB's defense has already allowed 27.7 ppg this year and Navy's own defense gave up 38 to FAU, so points could still come from either side. Without a specific incremental data point beyond what already moved the number, I lean under but wouldn't bet a full unit at 51.5 today.

The call, written up

On the spread

Navy at UAB, Navy -7. The line opened Navy -10 to -11.5 and has been bet down to -6.5 to -7 across every book, the largest single-week move on the slate, tied to starting quarterback Braxton Woodson's ankle injury. Woodson was listed out as of September 15, though later coverage called him week-to-week after an MRI showed no major structural damage; Yahoo reported September 23 that he will miss the game with Jackson Gutierrez starting. Woodson accounted for 296 rushing yards on 8.5 yards per carry and 4 rushing touchdowns through two games, effectively the offense's leading rusher at quarterback, while Gutierrez has thrown only 12 passes all season. UAB's defense held Louisiana scoreless on 108 yards allowed in the second half on September 21. Our own model favors Navy by 6.1 points, matching the market's move by coincidence, since it has no visibility into the injury. The counter-case: if Woodson's status is closer to week-to-week than out, Navy has beaten UAB by 25, 23 and 14 points the last three meetings.

On the total

Under 51.5. The total opened near 52 to 54.5 and has fallen to 51.5 across every book, tracking the Woodson injury news. Navy's offense loses its most productive rusher at quarterback to a backup with a 12-pass season sample, an argument for fewer points, while UAB's defense held Louisiana scoreless over the final 108 yards allowed on September 21. The counter-case: UAB has allowed 27.7 points per game this season, including a 42-point game against Illinois, and Navy gave up 38 to FAU. Weather is a non-factor.
