Keys to the game
  • Anderson ruled Hampton unavailable and identified Lyddy as this week's quarterback.
  • Official preview identifies first-year coach Blake Anderson and more than 70 new players.
  • Tulane's pass rush and third-down defense remain concerns.
What beats it

On the spread. Lyddy could perform comparably to Hampton against a Tulane defense generating little pressure. If McClure and Lewis remain unavailable, Tulane's offensive inconsistency becomes a greater obstacle to an 18-point win; a late Southern Miss touchdown is a credible cover route.

On the total. Southern Miss's defensive breakdowns could let Tulane score into the upper 30s, while Lyddy exploits limited pressure or adds late points. McClure returning would strengthen the over case. Conversely, ineffective quarterback play and continued Tulane offensive inconsistency could produce a comfortable under.

Read Ace's full case

Spread. The strongest explanation for Tulane -17.5 is Southern Miss's consecutive decisive FBS losses, rebuilding roster and confirmed quarterback change. Those justify a substantial favorite despite Tulane's uneven offense. Hampton's absence was public Monday, so it is largely priced information. Our -14.5 suggests taking points, but its foundation is suspect: Southern Miss officially describes a new head coach and more than 70 newcomers, contradicting the dossier's coaching-continuity flag and raising serious questions about 90.2% returning production. I lean Tulane at the captured -17.5/-106, with Thursday's FanDuel article showing -18.5 providing modest price support, although timestamps are not synchronized. This falls short of a normal-unit bet: Tulane has averaged only 17 points, and beat reporting identifies just one defensive sack through three games. Lyddy also produced 194 passing yards in relief, so assigning a large automatic quarterback downgrade would overstate the case. Captured opening spreads moved in both directions across books; that is not clear evidence of informed backing.

Total. The market's 52.5 balances Southern Miss's defensive failures against two inconsistent offenses; the captured decline from selected 53.5 to 54.5 openings already discounts scoring concerns. The strongest under case is Hampton's confirmed absence, Southern Miss's protection problems and Tulane's uncertain skill-player availability. The over case is substantial: Southern Miss conceded 48 to UConn, Lyddy supplied 194 passing yards in relief, and Tulane's weak pressure could sustain visiting drives. Favorable weather supplies no independent under edge. McClure's possible return would also help scoring. I have no actionable view at 52.5; the under designation represents a higher-price watch position, not panel support at today's receipt.

Where our number looks wrong.Southern Miss's first_year_head_coach=false is contradicted by its official introduction of Blake Anderson's first season. The reported roster overhaul also makes the 90.2% returning-production input questionable, although I cannot calculate a corrected percentage. Together with an unmodeled quarterback change, these weaken the apparent three-point Southern Miss advantage. They warrant discounting -14.5, not mechanically inventing a replacement fair spread.

More key facts
  • Published sportsbook context shows Tulane -18.5/-106 and total 52.5.
  • Southern Miss lost 48-20; Lyddy produced 194 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception in relief.
  • McClure's season debut remained uncertain after a fall-camp injury.
  • Covers lists Page out and McClure and Lewis questionable; these are secondary-source designations.
  • Saturday area forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions, a high near 87°F and northeast winds 5 to 10 mph.

  • Tulane RB Jamauri McClure out with foot injury, has not played all season, eyeing return at Army Oct 10
What beats it

On the spread. Southern Miss's defense has been shredded by FBS offenses (43, 48 allowed) and Lyddy is an untested road starter; Tulane at home could reach 35+ and cover comfortably, which is exactly the outcome the -17.5 is built on. If Tulane's home offense shows up, this dog lean loses clean.

On the total. Southern Miss's defense has allowed 43 and 48 to FBS offenses; if Tulane's home offense clicks, this sails over on the favorite's scoring alone, and USM's own weekly point totals (25.7 ppg) are not as low as their FBS games suggest.

Spread.Market-first: -17.5 says a home-field power team should run a road backup QB and a leaky offense out of the building. But two things undercut a full lay. First, the price moved the wrong way: books opened -18.5/-19 and settled to -17.5 even after Southern Miss lost QB1 Ethan Hampton (hand) on 9/21-22, the number should have climbed toward Tulane, and it fell, which reads as money on the dog. Second, Tulane's own offense is thin: 17 ppg, 3 at Duke and 20 at Kansas State, only 28 at home vs South Alabama, and their lead back Jamauri McClure has not played all year. Laying 17.5 with a 17-ppg favorite is uncomfortable. Against that, Southern Miss's defense is genuinely bad (43 to Auburn, 48 to UConn) and Landry Lyddy is a career backup on the road, so a blowout is live. Net: a mild lean to the points, not a bet, the number is large and two-way.

Total. Both offenses have struggled against real competition. Southern Miss will start backup Lyddy on the road and scored just 8 at Auburn and 20 vs UConn (its 49 came against FCS Alcorn); Tulane sits at 17 ppg without its lead back. That points under a 52.5. The total already ticked down from ~53.5-54.5 to 52.5, our totals model sits a shade under at 51.25, and Tulane home games have gone under 61% of 72 gradable spots, descriptive, not predictive, but directionally consistent. Weather is a non-factor: 84F, wind ~4 mph, no rain, so no scoring suppression to bank on. The real over case is Southern Miss's dreadful defense (43 and 48 allowed), which could let Tulane pile on at home.

Where our number looks wrong. Our -14.5 is a pure ratings number that never saw Hampton's injury, Lyddy starting, or McClure missing; it also flattens home field to 2.5 for every venue. It cannot know the market drifted toward the dog. Treat the 3-point gap as noise, per its own no-ATS-edge holdout.

  • Southern Miss QB Ethan Hampton (hand) not expected to play vs Tulane; HC Blake Anderson called the injury 'pretty significant'
  • Landry Lyddy set to make his first career start at QB for Southern Miss vs Tulane
  • Lyddy's 2026 relief stats through week 3: 20-of-33, 265 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
What beats it

On the spread. If Lyddy struggles in his first start and Tulane's defense (which held Duke and South Alabama under 25) forces multiple turnovers, this could be a laugher well beyond 17.5, Southern Miss just lost by 23 and 28 points the last two weeks against comparable-or-weaker competition, and a limited receiving corps (WR G. Page also out, elbow, no return timetable) makes a repeat blowout plausible.

On the total. If Lyddy settles in and Tulane's leaky defense (31 allowed to K-State) can't slow him, or Tulane's own offense breaks out at home in a get-well spot, this goes well over 52.5; conversely a clean Tulane blowout with an early running clock could go well under.

Spread. That convergence signals an efficiently priced number, not a market mistake. The strongest explanation for -17.5: Southern Miss was blown out by Auburn (43-8) and UConn (48-20) the last two weeks, and starting QB Ethan Hampton (hand) is now out, handing the offense to Landry Lyddy for his first career start (Yahoo Sports, SI, 9/21). Tulane, despite its own 1-2 record, lost competitively to Duke (14) and Kansas State (11), not by blowout, and is at home off a first-year coaching change. Still, Tulane's offensive line has been a real problem, 6 sacks and 12 tackles-for-loss allowed at K-State (Yahoo Sports, 9/20), and Tulane is averaging only 17 ppg. A 17.5-point margin needs Tulane's shaky O-line offense to function well above its season rate. That gap is the only lean I hold, and it isn't strong enough given the number is already efficiently priced across every book.

Total.Total sits at a converged 52.5 across all books, down from opens between 52.5 and 54.5, a modest but consistent downward move that lines up with Hampton's hand injury becoming known (9/21-22), which plausibly trims Southern Miss's expected scoring under a first-time starter. Tulane's offense (17 ppg, porous O-line: 6 sacks/12 TFL at K-State) is unlikely to run up a big number on its own, but Tulane's defense hasn't been stout either, it allowed 31 to Kansas State. A blowout-shaped 17.5-point spread can break either way on the total (garbage-time volume vs. clock-killing in a running-clock win). I don't have unpriced pace, tempo, or personnel-usage data to separate over from under with real conviction, and the books' own move already reflects the QB news. No genuine read here.

The call, written up

On the spread

Southern Miss at Tulane, Tulane -17.5. Southern Miss lost its last two games by a combined 63 points, 43-8 to Auburn and 48-20 to UConn, and now travels to New Orleans without starting quarterback Ethan Hampton (hand, ruled out 2026-09-21), turning to Landry Lyddy for his first career start. Two of three panels take the points anyway, citing Tulane's own offense, just 17 points per game through three weeks, and an offensive line that allowed six sacks and 12 tackles for loss at Kansas State on 2026-09-20, a tall order for a 17.5-point favorite. One of those panels also notes the number drifted from -18.5/-19 toward Southern Miss even after Hampton's injury became public, which it reads as money on the underdog rather than a correction. The dissenting panel takes Tulane instead, pointing to Southern Miss's new head coach and roster turnover as reasons our own -14.5 line may already overrate Southern Miss, with the team's recent blowout losses adding to that case.

On the total

Under 52.5. The total slid from opens between 52.5 and 54.5 to 52.5 as Ethan Hampton's hand injury became known, trimming Southern Miss's expected scoring under first-time starter Landry Lyddy. Two panels hold a mild lean under, pointing to Southern Miss's own offense, just 8 points at Auburn and 20 against UConn the last two weeks, and Tulane averaging only 17 points per game. The counter-case is Southern Miss's defense, which has allowed 43 and 48 points in those same games, giving Tulane's offense room to push this over at home.
