Navy at Air Force. Lean: Navy +3.5. No call on the total.
The call
The panelists
- Navy's preview gives the rushing rankings, Woodson's one UAB snap and Gutierrez's FAU start production.
- Szarka produced 171 rushing yards and two touchdowns at Nevada.
- DraftKings displayed Navy plus 3 at 68 percent of handle and 40 percent of bets.
On the spread. If Woodson remains unavailable and Air Force's home rushing attack controls field position, the market's move is justified and Navy plus 3.5 has little cushion beyond the key number.
On the total. Woodson remains out, Gutierrez is contained by Air Force's option familiarity, and long run-heavy possessions create the low-possession script the market has already priced.

Spread.Market first: Air Force moved from roughly a pick or short dog at some openers to a 3 to 3.5 point favorite, with Woodson's ankle absence at UAB the clearest explanation alongside Navy's third straight road game and Colorado Springs altitude. Navy's official preview still identifies it as second nationally in rushing offense and eighth in rushing defense, while Gutierrez ran for 134 yards in his first quarterback start at FAU. That makes Navy plus 3.5 the directional side because it retains the key number against an Air Force offense that also lives on the ground. This is only a lean: Woodson's Saturday status is unverified, the market already made a substantial adjustment, and Navy's thin experience and road setup support the home favorite. Our number, Air Force minus 2.5, is essentially market-consistent and supplies no independent edge.
Total.Market first: the total fell from 49.5 to 51.5 at early captured openers to 45.5 to 46.5, chiefly consistent with the option-on-option matchup and Woodson's ankle absence. That explanation is credible, but the current number has compressed too far for a clear, low-wind morning. Air Force's two FBS games have totaled 70 and 69, and Navy's official preview shows both teams averaging 333.7 rushing yards per game. Navy's 20-point UAB outing without a functional Woodson role is the main objection. Our 58.1 projection is too dependent on prior-year scoring and does not create a bet, but it agrees with the remaining over case at 46.5.
Where our number looks wrong. The spread model is not materially different from the market, but its flat 2.5-point home field treatment misses the altitude and Navy's third consecutive road game. It also cannot price Woodson's ankle status or the service-academy rushing matchup.
- Navy's preview reports both teams at 333.7 rushing yards per game.
- Air Force's Nevada recap details the 36-33 double-overtime result and Szarka's production.
- The matchup page listed a 66-degree forecast, zero percent rain and 3 mph wind.
- Newberry expects Woodson and Gutierrez to play vs Air Force; Szarka 33 carries, 171 yards at Nevada
- Navy rushing defense 64.7 yards per game, rushing offense 333.7; home team 10-3 in last 13 meetings
- Navy lost 24-20 at UAB with Gutierrez starting; two late fumbles
On the spread. If Woodson is limited or Gutierrez starts again, Navy's passing threat disappears and ball security was already a problem at UAB. Air Force is at home at altitude, the home team dominates this series, Szarka is the Mountain West offensive player of the week, and the steady move from a pick to 3 or 3.5 across every book may be informed money. Navy's run defense numbers came against Towson, FAU and UAB, not a triple option.
On the total. Over: Air Force's defense has been soft and Navy's offense with a healthy Woodson scores efficiently, while overtime nearly pushed the Nevada game well past this number. Under: two triple option teams limit possessions, the sharp side of the move is down, and a limited Woodson would stall Navy.

Spread.Market first: Air Force opened near a pick and has been bet to 3 at most books and 3.5 at FanDuel. The strongest case for that number is Navy's 1-2 start, a roster with very little returning production, a backup quarterback who fumbled late at UAB, and a series in which the home team has won 10 of the last 13. The news tilts slightly toward Navy: Brian Newberry said on 9/28 he expects Braxton Woodson back from his ankle sprain, and a large part of the move came while Woodson was out. Navy's run defense has allowed 64.7 yards per game, which matters against an Air Force offense that runs almost every snap through Liam Szarka, and Air Force gave up 38 points to North Dakota State and 27 in regulation at Nevada. Navy has won the last two meetings. That is enough for a lean on Navy plus 3 at a good price, not a bet, because Woodson's mobility on a bad ankle is unconfirmed and the move toward Air Force may reflect information I cannot see.
Total.Market first: this total opened as high as 51.5 and has been bet down to 45.5 to 46.5 across every book. Two option offenses that run the clock shorten the game, and this series has produced several very low scoring games. Our totals model says 58, but it is mostly last year's scoring with venue terms and has no pace input for a game where both teams average over 330 rushing yards. The over case is real: Air Force has allowed 38 and 33 points and scored 34 per game, Navy scored 30 or more twice, and the forecast is clear with light wind. The under case is the matchup pace, Navy's strong run defense, and uniform downward movement. These pull in opposite directions with no incremental edge, so I hold no view.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating sees no quarterback availability: Navy's in-season number was dragged down by a UAB loss with the backup starting, so if Woodson is healthy the Navy rating is probably a little too low. It also applies a flat 2.5 home field, while this series has shown a stronger home edge, which cuts the other way. Net, the model and market agree and neither has a demonstrated edge here.
- Air Force won 36-33 in double overtime at Nevada
- Navy rushing offense 333.7 and rushing defense 64.7 yards per game
- Air Force 36-33 double overtime at Nevada, tied 27-27 in regulation
- Woodson dressed and warmed up but did not start vs UAB
- Covers leans Navy +3.5 at the early-week number
- Navy fell at UAB while Air Force won a close game at Nevada
On the spread. Air Force has a home edge at altitude, and Navy may start a backup quarterback with multiple running backs and its tight end questionable. A field goal loss pushes at 3, and a 4 point loss loses.
On the total. Air Force games have reached 70 and 68 combined points, and both defenses are leaky. Closing the gap from 51.5 means the under value may be spent.

Spread. The market has Air Force as a short home favorite at 3 to 3.5, which is roughly a home-field allowance between two similar run-heavy option-style offenses. Air Force is 2-1 with a loss to North Dakota State and a 36-33 escape at Nevada, so its defense gave up 33 or more twice. Navy is 1-2 but both losses were by 8 and 4 points on the road, and the roster is the defending 11-2 program's core. The line also moved toward Air Force from near pick'em at some books, so the market already pays for the home side. Navy's quarterback Woodson is questionable with an ankle sprain; backup Gutierrez started last week and lost by 4 at UAB. I could not verify Woodson's status this week. Taking the 3 at a near even price is a small lean, not a bet, because no incremental edge beyond the number is identified.
Total. Two run-first, clock-draining offenses point to fewer possessions, and the total has dropped from openers of 47 to 51.5 down to 45.5 to 46.5, so much of the under is already priced. Forecast is clear and calm (65F, 3 mph wind), which removes a weather angle either way. Both defenses have allowed 24 to 38 points in 2026, and Air Force's two scoring games were shootouts, which is the over case. A possible backup Navy quarterback supports a slower, more conservative Navy script. Net, a small lean under at 46, not a bet.
- Covers early leans favor the under
- Navy QB status uncertain
The call, written up
Navy at Air Force, Air Force -3.5. The market moved toward the home side: DraftKings from -1.5 to -3 and FanDuel from Navy -1.5 to Air Force -3.5 since September 27. Navy quarterback Braxton Woodson missed the 24-20 loss at UAB with an ankle sprain, and Denver Gazette (September 28) reports his coach expects him back, unconfirmed. Navy ranks eighth nationally in rushing defense at 64.7 yards per game (Navy Athletics, September 28), a real asset against an option offense. DraftKings splits on September 30 showed 68 percent of handle and 40 percent of bets on Navy +3. The counter-case is home field at altitude in a series the home team has won 10 of the last 13, and a Woodson setback would leave Navy thin at quarterback. Take Navy +3.5 at -118 at BetMGM.
No pick on the total. One leans under on option pace and Navy's run defense, and one holds no view.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
