Keys to the game
  • Temple’s September 28 game guide says the Owls rushed for at least 176 yards in each of their first four games, including 217 against Army.
  • Ajani Sheppard went 11 for 20 for 242 yards and two touchdowns against Army on September 25.
  • USF said Michael Wooten was out injured and the Bulls used a fourth different starting offensive line at Bowling Green.
What beats it

On the spread. If Smolik remains out, Sheppard’s explosive Army output proves nonrepeatable on the road, and Wooten returns or USF’s reshuffled line stabilizes, the market’s move through -6 is justified and Temple’s cover case weakens.

On the total. Rain or a weather delay, Smolik remaining unavailable, Temple’s thin receiving group, and another compromised USF passing game would validate the sharp move down and leave the under case stronger despite the reduced number.

Spread.Market first: USF’s unbeaten record, Temple’s 1-3 record, Jaxon Smolik’s foot issue, and the move from USF -5.5 or -6 to -6.5 explain the favorite price. That is a reasonable adjustment, but Temple showed a functional alternative at quarterback against Army: Ajani Sheppard produced 242 passing yards and two long touchdown passes, while the Owls continued their four-game rushing run. USF also entered its last game with a fourth different starting offensive line and regular tackle Michael Wooten out, then managed 214 yards. Temple +6.5 is a low-confidence lean, not a bet, because the market has already moved toward USF and neither team has published a final availability update for the relevant offensive injuries.

Total.Market first: the total fell from 51 to 53.5 at openers to 48 or 48.5, a move consistent with Smolik’s absence against Army, USF’s 14-6 grinder behind a disrupted line, and a Tampa thunderstorm forecast. The under case is therefore already substantially priced. Over 48.5 is the small lean because Temple’s replacement quarterback generated 242 passing yards and two long scores against Army, Temple has exceeded 176 rushing yards in every game, and USF still has a back-to-back 100-yard rusher in D.J. Crowther. The supplied 56.2 projection supports the direction but is not independently sufficient, especially because it misses quarterback status, line injuries, and weather. Pass rather than bet because the weather and availability concerns are unresolved.

Where our number looks wrong. The supplied USF -8.5 rating is only two points above market and is too insensitive to USF’s unsettled offensive line and Temple’s quarterback substitution. Its result-only inputs also risk treating USF’s 4-0 record as cleaner evidence than the 214-yard Bowling Green performance warrants.

More key facts
  • Jaxon Smolik did not play against Army because of a lingering foot issue, according to the September 25 report.
  • Temple’s September 28 game guide says it has rushed for at least 176 yards in all four games and identifies 220.3 rushing yards per game.
  • USF reported that D.J. Crowther ran 23 times for 143 yards and a touchdown at Bowling Green on September 26.
  • The National Weather Service forecast for Saturday October 3 in Tampa calls for chance showers and thunderstorms, with approximately 81 degrees at 7 p.m. and southeast wind near 7 mph.
  • Action Network listed the game’s opening total at 51.5, providing independent context for the subsequent lower captured total.

Keys to the game
  • USF beat Bowling Green 14-6; Van Buren 7 of 11 for 52 yards, six sacks allowed, fourth different OL combination
  • Temple lost to Army 21-17; Sheppard started for injured Smolik, 242 passing yards, 2 TD, no turnovers; Temple 459 total yards
  • Smolik split reps with Sheppard Monday and did not finish with the first team
What beats it

On the spread. USF has won its three FBS games by 10, 4 and 8, never covering a big number with this offense, and a sixth sack game against a Temple front could leave it scoring in the teens again. Temple is 2-0-1 or better against the spread this season per VegasInsider and has led late in two of its losses. If Wooten stays out and Sheppard keeps producing explosive plays, a one score game with a backdoor cover is very live.

On the total. Temple's defense is below average and gave up 49 at Toledo, Van Buren threw for 300 against Delaware State the week before the Bowling Green dud, and Temple's offense has hit explosive plays with Sheppard. Two turnovers or short fields and this clears 48.5 easily; the total has also already moved a lot, so value may sit on the over.

Spread.Market first: South Florida -6.5 reflects a 4-0 home favorite under first-year coach Brian Hartline with a defense allowing 14 points per game, against a 1-3 Temple team still sorting out quarterback after Jaxon Smolik's foot injury. The one common opponent agrees in direction: USF won at Army 28-24 while Temple lost at home to Army 21-17, which after venue adjustments reads closer to double digits than 6.5. Against that, the USF offense has been stale against FBS teams (19 at FIU, 14 at Bowling Green), the line is on its fourth starting combination with Michael Wooten out, and Van Buren took six sacks last week. Temple's offense moved the ball with Ajani Sheppard (459 yards vs Army). Net, I lean USF at the current 6.5 because the defensive matchup and common opponent support it, but the offensive line questions keep this a lean, not a bet.

Total.Market first: the total fell from 51 to 53.5 at open to 48 to 48.5 across all five books, pricing USF's low scoring FBS games (totals of 28, 52 and 20) and a wet forecast. Our totals model says 56.2, but it is mostly last season's 40 points per game USF offense, which no longer exists under a new staff and a patched line. Over case: Temple's defense allowed 49 to Toledo and 27.8 per game, and Sheppard gives Temple explosive plays. Under case: USF wins with defense and the run game, likely shortens the game with D.J. Crowther carries, and showers are likely around kickoff. The drop has absorbed most of that, so this is a narrow lean under at 48.5, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating does not see that USF's offense has been built on the run and is playing behind a patched line, so its 30 points per game is inflated by a 59 point FCS game. It also does not see Temple's quarterback situation, which may cut either way since Sheppard has outperformed Smolik's early output. The -8.5 is probably a point or so too high on USF, which is why I only lean at 6.5.

Keys to the game
  • Sheppard started vs Army with Smolik hurt; Smolik still not fully healthy as of Monday
  • Temple injury list includes Smolik questionable foot, OL Hills out, CB Ward-Grant out
What beats it

On the spread. South Florida's offense has produced only 14 and 28 points in its two road games and the defense has held up, so a 7 point win margin is not assured; Temple's backup has played competitively in two close losses and a rainy game compresses margins, favoring the underdog.

On the total. Both offenses have scored heavily at times (Temple 48 at Toledo, South Florida 59), the forecast rain may not materialize or may arrive late, and the steam on the under already captured most of the weather and quarterback value.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The market explanation is straightforward: South Florida is 4-0 at home against a 1-3 Temple team that has lost three straight and is starting a backup quarterback, Ajani Sheppard, with Jaxon Smolik still questionable with a foot injury. The spread is 6.5 at every book and has drifted from 5.5 to 6 at some books to 6.5, so the news is already priced. The Bulls' recent results are narrow: a 28-24 win at Army and 14-6 at Bowling Green, under a first-year head coach, while Temple lost by 4 to Army and by 1 at Toledo. Nothing I could verify points to a stale number in either direction. Taking Temple with points is a generic underdog play and taking South Florida at 6.5 lays a full price without incremental evidence. I hold a slight directional preference for the home side on the quarterback gap but not at a number I would accept.

Total. The market has already cut the total from 51 to 53.5 at open down to 48 to 48.5, a move of 3 to 5 points, which prices in rain, South Florida's defense and Temple's quarterback change. The strongest explanation for the current number is that move. Over case: Temple scored 48 at Toledo and 38 against Rhode Island, and South Florida hung 59 on Delaware State, so both offenses can score. Under case: South Florida's last two were 14-6 and 28-24 on the road, Temple's offense is led by a backup quarterback and several questionable receivers, and the captured forecast shows rain at kickoff. I lean under at 48 or better but the move means much of the value is gone, so this is a lean, not a bet.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
