South Florida at UTSA. Lean: South Florida +7.5. Lean: Under 50.5.
The call
The panelists
- USF said it was missing six starters against Temple, including Ayden Jackson, Sam Robinson, Thomas Shrader, Michael Wooten, Arhmad Branch and Jair Murphy.
- UTSA's beat report said tackle roles were being shuffled, Ben Rios was a game-time decision, and Traylor described the offense as surviving.
- Rice reported UTSA's 16 to 14 win and that UTSA was scoreless for the final 35:49.
On the spread. If several of USF's missing starters remain out, especially its two leading tacklers and offensive linemen, UTSA's home advantage and depth edge can justify a margin beyond seven.
On the total. The under loses its foundation if USF restores most of its missing starters, and UTSA's 59-point output against Colorado State shows the indoor setting can support a fast, explosive game.

Spread.Market first: UTSA moved from minus 6.5 or 7 to minus 7.5 while South Florida enters off a 13 to 17 home loss and had six missing starters in that game. That is a coherent adjustment for an injury hit, transfer-heavy Bulls roster facing UTSA's major home-field environment. Still, the available plus 7.5 crosses the key number and UTSA's own offense produced 16 points at Rice, with Traylor saying it is surviving rather than playing to its capability. UTSA also has unsettled tackle and guard roles, with Ben Rios a game-time decision. Our minus 6.5 is not evidence of an edge, but it agrees that the market has moved beyond a clean UTSA margin. Take South Florida only as a low-grade lean at plus 7.5.
Total.Market first: the total fell from 55.5 or 56.5 to 49.5 to 50.5, most plausibly pricing USF's personnel absences and consecutive low-output conference-level games rather than weather, since the Alamodome is indoors. The move itself removes much of the obvious under value, but 50.5 remains a low-grade under lean. USF scored 13 against Temple while missing six starters, and UTSA managed 16 at Rice after a scoreless second half. UTSA's offensive-line uncertainty adds to that case. The over argument is real: USF's absentees could return, UTSA scored 59 two games ago, and this model's 57.25 reflects prior offensive strength. That model is especially vulnerable with USF's rebuilt roster, so it does not outweigh the recent, dated personnel information.
Where our number looks wrong. The spread model cannot price USF's six absent starters, UTSA's offensive-line injuries or either staff's rapidly changing depth chart. Its flat 2.5-point home field can also understate the Alamodome, but its 0.8-point disagreement is far below its documented error.
- USF reported six absent starters in its 17 to 13 loss to Temple and totaled 319 yards.
- Rice reported UTSA's 16 to 14 win and its scoreless final 35:49.
- UTSA's Oct. 6 report described offensive-line shuffling and an offense not yet at its capability.
- Temple beat USF 17 to 13; Van Buren 17 of 32 for 205; Reuben fumble late; next game at UTSA Thursday; UTSA 33-5 at home under Traylor.
- Hartline: right now we have to wake up on offense; 108 first half yards; 1 of 6 on third down.
- USF outscored 68 to 19 by FBS teams in first halves; scored 19, 28, 14, 13 in four games before Temple.
On the spread. USF's defense has allowed 14.6 points per game and held Temple to 274 yards even while shorthanded; if Jackson and Robinson return, a game played in the low forties makes a full touchdown a lot to lay. UTSA's offense managed 16 points against Rice with drops and protection breakdowns, and a 7 point margin is the single most likely final result, so laying 7 risks a push and laying 7.5 risks losing on the key number.
On the total. UTSA's home games have trended over, UTSA scored 59 and allowed 45 against Colorado State in this building, and a dome removes weather. If USF's defense is still missing starters, UTSA could score in the 30s alone, and an overcorrection from the opener is possible after two fluky low scoring weeks.

Spread. The strongest explanation is that the South Florida offense has not replaced last year's production under first year coach Brian Hartline: against FBS teams the Bulls have scored 19, 28, 14 and 13, and they were outscored 68 to 19 in first halves before the Temple loss. Michael Van Buren Jr. went 17 of 32 for 205 yards against Temple, the run game managed 3 yards per carry, and Hartline said the offense has to wake up. UTSA is 33 and 5 at home under Jeff Traylor. The reported absence of several USF defensive starters, including top tacklers Ayden Jackson and Sam Robinson, would tilt this further toward UTSA if it holds, but I could not confirm it from a primary source. I hold a small lean to UTSA at 7, not a bet: the line already sits on the key number and UTSA's own offense stalled against Rice.
Total. The market opened 52.5 to 56.5 and has been driven down to 49.5 to 50.5 at every book, a move of three to six points. That move fits the recent evidence: USF has scored 14 and 13 in its last two FBS games and allows 14.6 points per game, and UTSA scored 6 at Texas and 16 at Rice. Our totals model at 57.25 is mostly last year's offenses, including a USF attack that no longer exists, so I discount it heavily. The over case is real: UTSA put up 59 and allowed 45 to Colorado State, it is a dome, and UTSA home games have gone over regularly. On balance I lean under 50.5, but the market has already taken most of the value, so this is a lean, not a bet.
Where our number looks wrong. Our USF rating still leans on a preseason prior built partly from last year's 40.5 points per game offense, which left with the coaching staff and most returning production (12.6 percent returning). The in-season refit has dropped USF to -1.04, which looks closer to right; the remaining gap to market is small and our number is not the reason for this lean.
- UTSA 16, Rice 14; McCown 19 of 29 for 148 with an interception; offense stalled after first four drives; Traylor cites drops and protection.
- Pickswise lists UTSA -7.5 current, original line UTSA -7, analyst playing UTSA to -8.
- BetMGM preview lists UTSA -7.5, USF 2-3 ATS and UTSA 3-2 ATS this season.
- USF offense struggled vs Temple: 319 total yards, 13 points.
- UTSA offense stalled vs Rice after first four drives; 16 points.
- BetMGM preview notes UTSA has gone over in its last seven home games.
- USF beat Army 28-24 on a late Van Buren touchdown pass, first-year coach Hartline
- USF opened the Hartline era with a 19-9 win over FIU
- Van Buren named USF starting quarterback
On the spread. UTSA is at home with a high-scoring offense, USF's offense produced 13 points against Temple and 14 against Bowling Green, and a young quarterback on the road can stall. If UTSA scores 31 or more, USF needs 24 to cover.
On the total. UTSA's offense scored 59 and 45 in two games, USF's offense has 59 points in a game against a weak opponent, and the sharp move already took the number down.

Spread. The market has UTSA as a 7 to 7.5 point home favorite, and the strongest explanation is the Alamodome home field plus a UTSA offense that has scored 45, 31, 59 and 16 and a USF offense that went quiet in a 13 to 17 home loss to Temple. Both teams are 4-1 and both sit in the American. USF's defense is the better unit, allowing 14.6 points a game against UTSA's 26.2, and the spread opened at 6.5 to 7 and drifted to 7.5 at some books, so the market has already paid for UTSA. I found no verified injury or quarterback news this week that changes the picture, so this is a lean on the points with the best number, not a bet. A first-year coach and a young offense add variance in both directions.
Total. The total has fallen from 52.5 to 56.5 at open down to 49.5 to 50.5 now, so the market has already corrected a lot of the early points inflation. The over case is UTSA's scoring record, 59 against Colorado State and 45 in week 1. The under case is USF's defense at 14.6 points allowed, a USF offense that has scored 14 and 13 in two of its last three, and UTSA's 16 point output at Rice last week.
- USF defense held Army to 24 and FIU to 9
The call, written up
South Florida at UTSA, UTSA -7.5. The plus side crosses the key number of 7 after UTSA moved from 6.5 or 7 at open, and UTSA's own offense scored 16 at Rice on 10/3 with Jeff Traylor saying it is surviving rather than near its capability; our UTSA by 6.5 sits within a point of the market.
Under 50.5. The total fell from 52.5 to 56.5 at open to 49.5 to 50.5 after South Florida scored 13 against Temple and UTSA scored 16 at Rice, and the Alamodome roof removes weather. Under 50.5 at -110 at FanDuel.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
