UAB at Memphis. Pick: UAB +14.5. Lean: Under 54.
The call
The panelists
- Memphis announced its 59-8 win at Charlotte and the Oct. 10 home game against UAB.
- The official Memphis game center lists Stokes as QB with 1,371 passing yards.
- UAB’s official preview quotes Mortensen on the Samford offensive performance and identifies Ryder Burton as the quarterback under discussion.
On the spread. Memphis’ passing efficiency, home field and UAB’s two road losses can make the corrected -14 price too cheap if UAB’s offense again fails to execute.
On the total. A cleaner-than-forecast game, Memphis’ explosive passing offense and short fields against a UAB attack forced to chase could defeat the already-discounted total.

Spread.Market first: Memphis merits favorite status after its 59-8 conference-opening win at Charlotte and with Marcus Stokes directing a productive offense, while UAB is 0-2 away from Birmingham. The retreat from openers of Memphis -14.5 to -15.5 into a broadly available -14, despite that visible Memphis result, is the strongest reason not to lay the favorite. UAB coach Alex Mortensen also called the Samford offensive showing below standard, so this is not a bullish UAB football case. It is a thin price case: +14 is preferable to joining the favorite after the market has already discounted Memphis. Our -14.6 rating is only 0.6 points from the receipt and supplies no independent edge.
Total.Market first: the total was cut from 58.5 to 59.5 openers to 52.5 to 54, a sharp correction that most plausibly reflects forecast concern and skepticism that UAB can supply its share against Memphis. At 54, that adjustment is already substantial, so this is only an under lean, not a bet. The current forecast calls for rain around the 7 p.m. ET kickoff and temperatures near 63F. That remains incrementally useful for an outdoor game, but wind and rainfall intensity are not settled. Memphis’ offense is the direct counterweight: Stokes has operated efficiently and the Tigers just scored 59.
Where our number looks wrong. The model’s Memphis -14.6 is effectively the market and its documented margin error overwhelms the 0.6-point difference. It also cannot distinguish Charlotte’s 0-5 profile from a stronger opponent or account for current availability.
- Covers lists Ferguson as questionable, with no Memphis injuries listed, but the UAB player designation is not independently confirmed.
- UAB’s official Oct. 5 preview says its offense fell below standard against Samford.
- Memphis confirmed its 59-8 win at Charlotte on Oct. 4.
- The official game center lists the game at outdoor Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
- Stokes 20 of 25 for 318 yards and five TDs, Memphis 59 Charlotte 8, next game vs UAB
- UAB 3-2 under Alex Mortensen, Ryder Burton starting QB, game scheduled Oct 10 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium on ESPN2
- UAB beat Memphis 31-24 on Oct 18 2025; Burton 20 of 27 for 351 yards and three TDs
On the spread. Memphis has the clearly better offense, is at home, and just won by 51; if Stokes keeps that efficiency and UAB's offense (24 points per game, much of it against weak opponents) stalls in rain, Memphis can win by three or four scores. If the weather forecast softens, the low scoring margin compression disappears. Line movement toward UAB may also be noise from a small market rather than informed money.
On the total. If the forecast holds or worsens, with steady rain and wind near 20 mph at kickoff, both passing games suffer and a game in the 40s is very plausible; the market move may reflect sharper weather information than ours, and UAB's offense has been modest against FBS opponents.

Spread.Market first: Memphis at 14 reflects a first-year staff that has found a quarterback in Marcus Stokes (20 of 25, 318 yards, five touchdowns in the 59-8 rout of Charlotte on Oct 3) and a 4-1 start whose only loss came at Boise State, against a UAB side that is 3-2 with modest wins over UL Monroe, Navy and FCS Samford. The line opened 14.5 to 15.5 and has been bet down to 14 at four of five books, while the total fell from 58.5 to 59.5 into 53.5 on a wet, windy forecast. A lower scoring environment compresses margins and makes a two touchdown cover harder. UAB has not lost any 2026 game by more than 19, lost at Louisiana by 7, and beat Memphis 31-24 last October with Ryder Burton at quarterback, who remains the starter. That is a lean to the points at 14, not a bet: the Memphis offense is clearly better than last year and a blowout is in its range.
Total. The total opened 58.5 to 59.5 and has dropped to 52.5 to 54, almost entirely on a rain and wind forecast captured four days out. Our totals model, which already subtracts about 3.5 points for 17.7 mph wind, still lands at 55.1. Memphis is scoring 38.6 per game with an efficient passing game, and the two teams' season scoring profiles sit in the mid 50s. Under case: steady rain and gusty wind cut passing efficiency, UAB plays slow and lost 14-21 at Louisiana, and the market move may be informed. Over case: a five to six point weather adjustment on a forecast still days away is large, and forecasts that soften leave the number short.
Where our number looks wrong. Our number sits within half a point of the market, so there is no disagreement to exploit. The model does not see weather, which the market has clearly priced into the total; a wind and rain game should shade expected margin toward the underdog slightly, which the rating ignores. The rating also cannot see that Memphis has a new starting quarterback producing at a high level, which argues the in-season refit may still be understating Memphis, so the two blind spots roughly offset.
- Outside preview number had Memphis by 10.5 before the week 5 results
- Memphis scored 59 against Charlotte with Stokes throwing for 318 yards; that game was moved earlier because of anticipated bad weather
- UAB 2026 results: 23-42, 26-20, 14-21, 24-20, 33-14
- UAB beat Memphis 31-24 in 2025 with Ryder Burton throwing three touchdowns
- Game scheduled October 10 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, Burton the UAB quarterback
On the spread. Memphis scored 59 last week and has a clear talent edge; if the rain is lighter than forecast or Memphis scores early on turnovers, the favorite covers easily. The UAB tight end is questionable and I could not verify other availability.
On the total. Memphis has scored 42, 45 and 59 at home or on the road in three of five games, and a forecast can change by Saturday; a dry game with Memphis scoring 40 clears this number.

Spread.Market explanation first: Memphis is 4-1 with a 59-8 win at Charlotte, a first-year coach and a much deeper roster, while UAB has a rebuilt roster and a 4-8 2025 record, so a number near 14 is the market paying for form and talent. The spread has already come in from 14.5 to 15.5 at open to 14 at most books, and the total dropped about five points, so the market has priced the wet forecast (rain, wind near 18 mph) as a total and partly as a spread. Rain and wind compress possessions and favor the underdog on a two-touchdown number, and UAB beat Memphis outright last October with Ryder Burton at quarterback. That is a thin lean, not a bet: I could not verify availability for either team beyond a questionable UAB tight end, and the weather edge is largely priced.
Total. The total fell from 58.5 or 59.5 to 52.5 to 54 on a forecast of rain with wind near 18 mph, so the market has already taken most of the weather out. The case for the under is that wet conditions slow the pass game and shorten the game, and the first-year-coach Memphis offense that just hung 59 may be flattered by a weak Charlotte defense. The case for the over is Memphis scoring 38.6 per game and UAB allowing 23.4. I lean under at 53.5, a small lean since the drop is large and I cannot verify the exact rain timing at kickoff.

The call, written up
UAB at Memphis, Memphis -14. The spread opened between 14.5 and 15.5 and has come down to 14 at four of five books, with FanDuel holding at 14.5. Memphis beat Charlotte 59-8 on Oct 3, with Marcus Stokes throwing for 318 yards and five touchdowns (AP, Oct 3). UAB is 3-2, and its coach called the Oct 3 offensive showing against Samford below standard (Oct 5). UAB TE A. Ferguson is listed questionable (Covers, Oct 7); no Memphis availability news was found. UAB won last year's meeting 31-24 with Ryder Burton at quarterback. The counter-case: Memphis has the better offense, is at home, and if UAB's offense stalls again a three or four score margin is in range. No panel graded this a bet. Take UAB +14.5 at FanDuel, -122.
Under 54. The total opened at 58.5 to 59.5 and now sits at 52.5 to 54, with the captured forecast showing rain and 17.7 mph wind for the Oct 10 kickoff. Wet conditions can slow the passing game, but a drop of five to six points has priced much of that already.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

- Memphis games go OVER 59% at home (n=73)Multi-season split: Memphis at home landed over 59% of 73 gradable games (2013-2025). A genuine venue tendency, one of several reasons to lean over, not a standalone edge.
