Keys to the game
  • Navy's Oct. 10 recap recorded Gutierrez's 232 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, 386 team rushing yards and the upcoming fourth road game in five.
  • The American's Week 6 notebook listed UTSA at 5-1, 2-0 in conference play and Navy at 2-3, 1-2.
  • Covers listed Walker, Chalmers, Barlow and Norris as questionable, and Donnell as out.
What beats it

On the spread. Gutierrez and Navy's 386-yard rushing attack against Tulsa can keep possession and shorten the game, while any favorable resolution of the listed Navy RB and TE questions improves the underdog's ability to stay inside seven.

On the total. UTSA has scored 31 or more in four of six games and Navy's Tulsa game reached 60 despite four Navy turnovers, so efficient explosive plays or short fields can defeat the possession-based under case.

Spread.Market first: UTSA is 5-1, 2-0 in league play and at home, while Navy is 2-3 with an 0-3 road record, so a home favorite near a touchdown appropriately prices venue and résumé. I still lean UTSA at the available -7 plus money. Navy's Tulsa result was explosive but turnover-aided and came at home; it now makes its fourth road trip in five games. UTSA has won three straight and returned from its Thursday game with nine days before kickoff. Navy quarterback Jackson Gutierrez is confirmed active from last Saturday, but several Navy skill players have unverified statuses.

Total.Market first: the total opened around 56.5 and the consensus has settled mostly at 55.5 to 56, which reflects Navy's run-heavy possession profile but preserves room for UTSA's offense and the Alamodome environment. I lean under only at the captured FanDuel 56.5, with 56 still acceptable. Navy's 34-26 win over Tulsa featured 34:31 of possession, two fourth-quarter drives lasting 6:43 and 6:16, and four Navy turnovers, a volatile path to 60 points rather than clean evidence for an over. UTSA's recent 31-24 South Florida result supplies the counterweight. The dome removes weather as a handicap.

Where our number looks wrong. The rating likely overstates UTSA because it learns only final margins and gives no credit for Navy's option-specific rushing performance or the effect of Navy's unresolved skill-player availability.

Keys to the game
  • Gutierrez 41 carries for 232 yards and 3 TD, Navy 386 rushing yards and 8 of 11 third downs in 34-26 win over Tulsa.
  • UTSA allows 184.7 rushing yards per game (119th in FBS); Navy has three road losses by 10 or fewer.
  • Gutierrez named starter over Woodson; Woodson had a left ankle sprain from the Week 2 FAU loss.
What beats it

On the spread. Gutierrez's Tulsa game may be an outlier against a defense that had no film on him; UTSA had nine days to prepare for the option after its Thursday game, while Navy is on a normal week and on the road again, where it is 0-3. If several of the questionable Navy backs sit, the option loses depth, and UTSA's passing game with McCown could open a two-score margin. Our own rating and the -8.5 line in one preview both point toward UTSA.

On the total. If Navy's option controls the clock the way it did against Tulsa, the game could have nine or fewer possessions per side and stay in the high 40s; if UTSA's run defense collapses and McCown keeps pace in the dome, 60 plus is easy. Neither outcome is clearly favored at 55.5 to 56.

Spread.Market first: UTSA at 6.5 to 7 reflects a 5-1 home team with a settled quarterback in Owen McCown against a 2-3 Navy side that lost most of last year's production and changed quarterbacks midseason. The news since then cuts toward Navy: Jackson Gutierrez took the job and ran 41 times for 232 yards in a 34-26 comeback win over Tulsa on 10/10, with Navy rushing for 386 yards and converting 8 of 11 third downs. UTSA allows 184.7 rushing yards per game, near the bottom of FBS, and its wins over Texas State, Rice and South Florida came by 5, 2 and 7 points. It stays a lean because Gutierrez has one good start and UTSA has extra rest after a Thursday game.

Total.Market first: 55.5 to 56 reflects a UTSA offense scoring 31.3 per game indoors against a Navy side whose games have landed at 57, 68, 44, 23 and 60. The under case is the quarterback change: Gutierrez threw only seven passes against Tulsa and ran 41 times, which means long clock-eating drives and fewer possessions for both teams. The over case is just as real: UTSA cannot stop the run, so those drives end in touchdowns, and UTSA has posted 59, 45 allowed and 31 points in a dome this year with no weather factor. Those forces offset, the market already sits on our number, and I hold no side I would take at a captured line.

Where our number looks wrong. The in-season refit has dragged Navy from a -0.9 preseason rating to -4.5 on results mostly produced with an injured or benched Woodson. It cannot see the switch to Gutierrez, whose first full start produced 386 team rushing yards, and it applies a flat home field to a UTSA team that has won its last three one-score games. I think the -10.9 number overstates UTSA by several points.

More key facts
  • UTSA beat South Florida 31-24 on Thursday night, McCown 22 of 31 for 209 yards.
  • Gutierrez 5 of 7 passing with 41 rushes against Tulsa; Navy 481 total yards.
  • UTSA has scored 31 or more in four of five wins and allows 184.7 rushing yards per game.

What beats it

On the spread. If the Navy backs return and the option controls the clock, Navy +6.5 or +7 covers easily. If UTSA's offense runs as it did against Colorado State, the favorite can win by two scores.

On the total. If Navy's offense moves at pace and UTSA scores freely, the game clears 56 easily. If Navy grinds the clock, the game stalls well below the number.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The market has UTSA as a 6.5 to 7 point home favorite in the Alamodome, which fits a 5-1 home team with a high scoring offense against a 2-3 Navy team that returned very little production and has lost to FAU, UAB and Air Force. The strongest explanation for the number is that Navy is no longer the 2025 team, while UTSA has quality wins over South Florida and Colorado State. Against that, Navy's option offense limits possessions and keeps underdogs live, UTSA's defense gives up 25.8 points a game, and Navy's last outing was a 34 to 26 win over Tulsa. Several Navy backs and tight ends carry undisclosed questionable tags that I could not verify. My live searches returned almost nothing current, so I cannot find an edge the price has missed on either side. The lean is a mild UTSA tilt, not strong enough to act on.

Total. The total sits at 55.5 to 56.5. The case for the over is UTSA scoring 31.3 a game with results like 59-45 and 45-16, plus a roof and no weather. The case for the under is Navy's option rushing offense, which limits possessions and runs the clock, and several Navy skill players carrying questionable tags. Navy's own games average 50.4 combined points, below the number, while UTSA games average 57.1. The two profiles roughly balance against a number that already splits them. I could not verify pace data or injury news this week, so this is a coin flip at the captured price and I hold no view.

The call, written up

No call on the spread

Navy at UTSA, UTSA -6.5. No pick. The market has held between 6.5 and 7 since open. The UTSA case: UTSA was 5-1 and 2-0 in the American as of Oct. 11, beat South Florida 31-24 on Oct. 8, and Navy makes its fourth road trip in five games (Navy Athletics, Oct. 10). The Navy case: Jackson Gutierrez ran 41 times for 232 yards in a 34-26 win over Tulsa on Oct. 10, Navy rushed for 386 yards, and UTSA allows 184.7 rushing yards per game (preview, Oct. 13). Four Navy backs and tight ends were listed questionable on Oct. 14. No pick on the spread.

No call on the total

No pick on the total. The game is indoors, so weather is not a factor. The under case is Navy's possession game: 34:31 of possession against Tulsa on Oct. 10 with two fourth quarter drives over six minutes. The over case is a UTSA offense scoring 31.3 per game against a Navy run game facing a defense that allows 184.7 rushing yards per game.

How to read this page

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all. Records against the number and on the total join these once our closing-line history is restored; the straight-up splits are live now.
