Kent State at South Florida. Pick: Kent State +21. Pick: Under 45.5.
The call
The panelists
- USF announced the 7 p.m. ET Saturday game at Raymond James Stadium on 2026-10-05.
- Kent State’s official schedule records the 0-3 road start and the 38-7 loss at Western Michigan on 2026-10-10.
- The matchup page lists DeShields as Kent State’s quarterback in each recent game and summarizes both teams’ current production and injuries.
On the spread. Kent’s low-efficiency offense fails to sustain drives, the questionable back and receivers are unavailable, and USF’s defense turns field position into a comfortable margin beyond 21.
On the total. USF converts the favorable matchup into repeated short fields or explosive scores, and Kent contributes enough late passing production to make the opener-to-current total decline look excessive.

Spread.Market first: USF is laying this price because Kent State has been outscored 154-20 in three road games, produces only 4.5 yards per play, and now faces a home favorite after USF’s two losses. The market has also already moved USF from -16.5 to -20.5 or -21, so it has fully recognized that basic mismatch. Kent State +21 is a modest lean because the final four-point move exceeds the on-field evidence from USF, which has scored 14 against Bowling Green and 13 against Temple before losing at UTSA. DeShields has remained Kent’s starter and threw for 223 yards last week. Our -15 number supports the dog only as context, not proof: its documented error is too large for this gap. I would pass, but accept the key number of 21.
Total. The strongest explanation for 45.5 is Kent State’s weak road offense, USF’s recent defensive games against FIU, Bowling Green and Temple, plus the market’s three to four-and-a-half point move down from openers near 48.5 to 49.5. That move has removed most of the easy under value. Still, under 45.5 at -110 is a slight lean: Kent averages 13.7 points overall, only 3.1 yards per rush, and has reached 10 points or fewer in four of six games. The forecast is mild with no precipitation at kickoff, so weather is not a standalone under case. Our 49.3 total is not persuasive because its 3.9-point disagreement is far inside its documented error and it does not capture current roster context.
Where our number looks wrong. The model’s USF -15 estimate appears too low if Kent State’s road blowouts and its bottom-tier current offensive efficiency are more predictive than its rating inputs. It also cannot price the reported availability concerns or USF’s new coaching staff.
- USF’s official schedule records the 14-6 Bowling Green win, 13-17 Temple loss and 24-31 UTSA loss.
- Kent State’s current offensive production, recent quarterback logs and listed injury designations are published on the matchup page.
- The 2026-10-15 Tampa hourly forecast lists intermittent clouds and 75 degrees at 7 p.m. local time.
- Western Michigan beat Kent State 38-7; DeShields 223 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT; Kent State fell to 2-4
- UTSA rallied for a 31-24 win over South Florida; Van Buren 16 of 29 for 177 yards
- Michael Van Buren Jr. named USF starter under first-year coach Brian Hartline
On the spread. Kent State's offense is among the worst in FBS and its defense was crushed by every strong team it played; if USF wins the turnover battle or scores on defense, a 24-0 or 31-7 game covers easily. The line moved four points toward USF at FanDuel, a sign that informed money agrees with the market, not our number. Covers lists Kent RB D. Armentrout and WRs M. Stephens and W. Bierfeldt as questionable, which would thin an already weak offense.
On the total. Kent State's defense allowed 57, 59 and 38 in three of its four FBS losses, so a lopsided USF night could reach 40 points on its own and push the total over even if Kent scores little. Tampa wind forecasts can soften by kickoff, and the market drop may have overshot.

Spread.Market first: South Florida -20.5 rests on a real talent gap. Kent State is 2-4, scores 13.7 a game, lost 38-7 at Western Michigan last week and was shut out at South Carolina, so books priced a home rout and the number climbed from 16.5 to 19.5 at open up to 20.5 and 21. That steam toward the Bulls deserves respect. The incremental case for the dog is the USF offense under first-year coach Brian Hartline and quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr.: excluding the FCS game against Delaware State, the Bulls have scored 19, 28, 14, 13 and 24, about 19.6 a game against FBS opposition, and they lost their last two to Temple and UTSA. Covering 21 asks an offense that has topped 28 only against FCS to win by three scores. Kent State's defense allowed 57 and 59 to SEC and Big Ten teams, but held Ball State to 13 and Ohio to 13. With gusty wind possible, a slower, lower-possession game helps the points. I lean Kent State, but the line move and Kent's own inept offense keep it a lean, not a bet.
Total.Market first: the total opened 48.5 to 49.5 and has been bet down to 45 and 45.5, likely reflecting two offenses that have struggled against FBS teams and a windy forecast. Our model says 49.3, but it leans on USF's 2025 offense of 40.5 points a game under a different coach and quarterback, which no longer exists. Over the Bulls' five FBS games their totals were 28, 52, 20, 30 and 55; Kent State's FBS games against non-power opponents finished 39, 23 and 45. A 17.9 mph captured wind further caps the passing games. The over case is real: Kent's defense gives up big plays and USF scored 59 against an FCS team, so a USF blowout of 38-10 clears the number alone. Much of the drop is already priced, so this is a lean under rather than a bet.
Where our number looks wrong. Our -15 may be too short if the market is correctly reading Kent State as a bottom-tier FBS team after the 38-7 loss at Western Michigan, but the preseason USF prior of 1.178 and the 2025 offense of 40.5 points a game with a different coach and quarterback overstate the Bulls offense; the in-season refit has pulled USF to -1.2, which is closer to what I see. The model also ignores the wind, which narrows margins.
- Legion Report lists USF -20.5 across books, totals 45.5 to 47.5
- Dimers lists total 45.5 with a projected 33-13 score, a 46 point total
- USF lost 31-24 at UTSA with Van Buren throwing for 177 yards
- SportsLine lists Kent State and several South Florida receivers as undisclosed injuries and shows 7pm ET 10/17 kickoff
- SportsGrid game page for the matchup, no odds or picks available to the public
On the spread. Kent State has been shut out or held to single digits in three of six games and gives up 32.5 per game, so a South Florida home team playing for bounce back could win 41-10. A thin, generic underdog lean without incremental news is exactly what this panel should not overrate.
On the total. South Florida can score 35 on its own against a defense allowing 32.5 per game, and Kent State only needs one touchdown to push this over. Wind forecasts can fade by evening and the forecast is 20 percent precipitation only.

Spread. The market makes South Florida a 20.5 point favorite, up from openers between 16.5 and 20, so the move has already priced Kent State's collapse (0-57 and 3-59 against power opponents, 7-38 at Western Michigan, 13.7 points per game). The strongest explanation for the number is that the Bulls should dominate a MAC team with the worst offense on the board. Against that, South Florida is a first-year-coach team that has lost two straight (13-17 to Temple, 24-31 at UTSA) and scores 26.2 per game. A 20.5 spread implies roughly a 33 to 12 result, which asks the Bulls for an offensive output they have reached against only weaker opposition, and an 18 mph forecast wind trims big margins. Kent State's one competitive game was a 10-13 loss to Ohio. Several receivers on both sides are questionable and unverified.
Total. The total has dropped from openers of 46.5 to 49.5 down to 45 to 45.5, so sharp money already leaned under. The case for the over is that South Florida can score 35 or more on a Kent State defense allowing 32.5 per game, and a blowout often adds garbage-time points. The case for the under is a Kent State offense scoring 13.7 per game and held to 10 points or fewer in four of six, plus 17.9 mph forecast wind that hurts the passing game and kicking, and South Florida's own offense running only 26.2 per game. Kent State likely tops out around 10, so the Bulls need about 35 to push the over, which they reached in two of six.

The call, written up
Kent State at South Florida, South Florida -21. The market has moved hard toward the Bulls: since the 10/11 open the spread has climbed from between -16.5 and -20 to -20.5 or -21 at every captured book. Kent State is 2-4, scoring 13.7 per game, shut out at South Carolina and beaten 38-7 at Western Michigan. But South Florida, under first-year coach Brian Hartline, has lost two straight, 13-17 to Temple and 24-31 at UTSA, and has averaged 19.6 points against FBS opponents, so three scores is a lot to ask. Counter-case: Kent State's defense allowed 57 and 59 to power opponents, and several skill players on both sides are questionable.
Under 45.5. Kent State averages 13.7 points and has scored 10 or fewer in four of six games, while South Florida has averaged 19.6 against FBS opponents. Counter-case: Kent State allows 32.5 points per game, so a South Florida blowout could clear the number alone.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
