Spread.Edge Labs makes Central Michigan -4, but I price this closer to CMU -0.5. The model’s flat 2.5-point home field and margin-based ratings understate how dysfunctional CMU’s offense has been: 212.5 yards per game, 53 passing yards per game and no passing touchdowns. Wyoming has also struggled, but Tyler Hughes is the confirmed starter and its 288.5-yard offense offers slightly more balance. The market has recognized that distinction: DraftKings moved from CMU -2.5 to -1.5, with current split pages showing most spread action on Wyoming. That movement is already pricing CMU’s poor start, so this is only a small edge. Wyoming’s two-time-zone trip and 11 a.m. Mountain body-clock kickoff subtract value, while rain favors mobile CMU quarterback Angel Flores. Still, in a game totaled below 40, taking rather than laying 1.5 is meaningful. No official availability report exists for this nonconference matchup, and I could not corroborate the aggregator injury labels through either team.
Total. The opener as high as 43.5 has already been hammered down, so most of the obvious under case is priced. Even so, 39.5 remains slightly above Edge Labs’ 38.26 projection, and the matchup supports another modest reduction: CMU averages 3.8 yards per play and 53 passing yards, while Wyoming averages 5.1 yards per play and 139.5 passing yards. Both offenses are likely to lean on the run, keeping the clock moving, and the kickoff forecast calls for showers or thunderstorms. The over case is turnover-driven short fields, these quarterbacks have combined for six interceptions, and wind near 8 mph is not prohibitive. Those risks keep this below strong-position confidence, but sustained scoring drives should be scarce.
Where our number looks wrong.CMU -4 appears too high. The rating rewards relative final-margin strength and applies a generic 2.5-point home edge while missing CMU’s collapse to 3.8 yards per play, 29.6% on third down and essentially no downfield passing game. My news-adjusted number is roughly CMU -0.5, making the model about 3.5 points too optimistic on the Chippewas.

Spread. This is a pick'em between two teams that cannot score. Our number (CMU -4) actually likes the home side MORE than the market's -1.5, but the rating reads only final margins and cannot see CMU's quarterback carousel. CMU is rotating Jadyn Glasser (5-of-14, 24 yds, INT early) and Angel Flores (10-of-19, 71 yds, 2 INT), has scored 7 at New Mexico and 13 vs FCS Colgate, and averages 10 PPG. Wyoming has settled on Tyler Hughes (W&M transfer, 18-of-26, 149, 2 TD vs Northern Colorado) plus a working run game in Markell Holman, and averages 17 PPG. In a heavy-rain, possible-thunderstorm game, the side with steadier QB play and a run identity travels better than CMU's interception-prone passing. Home field is real but does not fix an offense this broken. I take the point with the road dog. Near coin flip, hence the modest number.
Total.Strong environmental and personnel case for the under. NWS forecasts showers and possible thunderstorms through the 1pm ET kickoff window with a 90% chance of heavy rain and high near 65F, which suppresses passing and clock-stopping plays. Both offenses are among the worst in the matchup pool: CMU 10 PPG behind a two-QB carousel that has thrown multiple interceptions, Wyoming 17 PPG. Recent FCS tune-ups totaled 23 (CMU-Colgate) and 34 (Wyoming-Northern Colorado). The market already dropped this from FanDuel's 43.5 open to 39.5, and our totals model sits at 38.26, below the number. Rain plus two broken passing games plus a sub-40 baseline points under. Not a max bet because the total is already low, but a clear lean.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating has CMU favored by ~4 (our_number_home -4) versus the market's -1.5, i.e. it likes CMU more than the market does. That is backwards from the news: CMU has the worse offense and an unresolved two-QB rotation with multiple interceptions, while Wyoming has the more stable quarterback. The model is leaning on last year's/priors and does not read CMU's QB mess, so its edge on the home side is not one I trust.

Spread. Our EL model has CMU -4 at home vs a market that has sat rock-steady at CMU -1.5 all week (BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel all -1.5 as of 9/16), a 2.5-point gap our own gap_reading calls a pass. Two independent computer models line up closer to the market than to us: SportsGrid's model has Wyoming winning outright by 1 (55/45), and Dimers has CMU favored by only 0.5 (51/49) off 10,000 sims (sportsgrid.com, dimers.com, both 9/16). CMU's offense has scored just 10 ppg through two games, a 7-38 blowout loss at New Mexico and a 13-10 escape over FCS Colgate, while Wyoming, playing without starting QB Taylor Hasselbeck (ACL, out for the season since August per 7220sports/gowyo) and WR Tayvion Nystrom, is averaging 17 ppg with both of those absences already priced in for weeks. RB Duke Hubbard (knee) is questionable for Wyoming, the one fresher injury note that could tilt this toward CMU, but nothing offsets CMU's own offensive struggles. Taking Wyoming as the value side against a soft, stable home number.
Total.Rain and overcast with 10.4 mph wind and an 84% precipitation chance at kickoff (EL captured forecast, 9/16) argues down, not up. Our totals model sits at 38.26 against a market total that has been bet down from an early-week high of 43.5 at FanDuel to 39.5 across every tracked book by 9/16, the market moved toward our number, not away from it. Public and trend data agree: Covers shows 53% of bettors on the under, and both teams carry heavy recent under trends (Wyoming 8-of-11 under in recent games, CMU under in 5 straight). Central Michigan's offense has managed just 10 points per game through two weeks and Wyoming is missing its starting QB and a starting WR. Taking the under.
Where our number looks wrong. Our rating still leans heavily on preseason priors (CMU -7.2, Wyoming -10.66 composite) after just two games, and the calibration map stretches that into a -4 home number. Two market-facing independent models (Dimers, SportsGrid) both read this as close to a true coin flip rather than a 2.5-4 point CMU edge, and our own held-out testing shows no proven ATS edge at any gap size, a 2.5-point disagreement with a stable, unmoved market shouldn't be trusted here on its own.
The call, written up
Wyoming at Central Michigan, Central Michigan -1.5. The line opened Central Michigan -2.5 and has settled to -1.5, with tracked spread splits showing most tickets and money on Wyoming. All three panels backed Wyoming. The dated reporting supports that lean: Central Michigan is averaging just 10 points and 212.5 yards per game behind a rotating, interception-prone quarterback situation, while Wyoming has settled on Tyler Hughes and pairs him with a functioning run game, even while missing its preseason starting quarterback and a starting receiver, both out since August. Our own rating prices Central Michigan as a 4-point home favorite, well above the market, and two independent computer models read this closer to a true coin flip than a Central Michigan edge. The counter-case: Central Michigan's mobile quarterback fits a rain-soaked game, home field carries some value, and no official availability report exists for either roster this week.
Under 39.5. Kickoff calls for rain and thunderstorms with wind near 10 mph, and both offenses are banged up: Central Michigan's quarterback carousel and Wyoming's absences at quarterback and receiver. All three panels took the under. The counter-case is turnover-driven short fields, since the projected starters have combined for several interceptions already this season.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own.

The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins.
