UTEP at New Mexico. Lean: UTEP +23. Lean: Under 48.5.
The call
The panelists
- UTEP's official recap reports 222 total yards, 34:23 possession, and EJ Colson Jr. at 16 of 23 for 119 yards in the 33-7 Oregon State loss.
- New Mexico's official recap says it forced turnovers on consecutive defensive snaps and scored both times in the 42-18 win at New Mexico State.
- A current market page lists UNM -22.5 after opening -21.
On the spread. New Mexico's pressure and turnover production can give its efficient rushing offense repeated short fields, making UTEP's possession edge irrelevant and supporting a margin beyond 23.
On the total. Sunny conditions and New Mexico's ability to produce defensive short fields could let the Lobos reach the mid-30s or higher, leaving little room if UTEP creates even two scoring drives.

Spread. The market-first case for New Mexico is compelling: UTEP has scored seven or fewer in two of three FBS games, produced 222 yards against Oregon State, and now faces a New Mexico defense that has held eight straight opponents to 20 or fewer points. That explains the move from UNM -21 to -22.5. Still, the market has already charged a large premium for that profile. UTEP held possession for 34:23 against Oregon State and New Mexico's 42-18 win at New Mexico State included two turnover-created scores, not a uniformly dominant offensive outing. At the captured +23, that creates a small backdoor-cover case rather than a reason to oppose the market aggressively. Pass with a UTEP lean at the lone +23 receipt.
Total. The strongest explanation for 48.5 is UTEP's depressed FBS offense against a New Mexico defense that has allowed 20 or fewer points in eight straight games. The market also absorbed a sharp DraftKings move from 53.5 to 48.5, so the low-scoring thesis is no longer fresh. The small under lean survives because UTEP generated only seven points and 222 yards last week, while New Mexico has a running quarterback and backs who can sustain a game script that drains possessions. Clear, mild weather removes an environmental reason to buy the under, and New Mexico's 42 points last week shows the favorite can threaten this number alone. Pass, under only at 48.5.
Where our number looks wrong. The -25.9 model number is likely too aggressive because it stretches early final-score results, while New Mexico's latest 24-point win was materially aided by turnover scoring and UTEP's lopsided FBS losses came against Oklahoma, Michigan and Oregon State.
- UTEP's official September 27 recap reports seven points and 222 total yards against Oregon State.
- New Mexico's official September 26 recap states the defense has allowed 20 or fewer points in eight consecutive games.
- Current market listing shows total 48.5 after a 53.5 opening.
- New Mexico 42, New Mexico State 18: 427 total yards, 253 rushing, three takeaways, plus 14 season turnover margin.
- New Mexico has allowed 20 or fewer points in eight straight games; Humphrey over 100 rushing yards by the school's count.
- Oregon State 33, UTEP 7: total yards 451 to 222, UTEP 3 of 13 on third down, Colson 16 of 23 for 119 yards.
On the spread. UTEP may simply be unable to score. The Miners have 24 points in three FBS games and convert few third downs, and New Mexico's defense creates takeaways by design, not only by luck, with multiple in every game. If the Lobos get two more short fields or a defensive score, 35-7 or 38-10 is the natural landing spot and the favorite covers. UTEP's defense gave up 401, 431 and 451 yards to its three FBS opponents, and New Mexico ran for 253 last week. The market has also moved toward New Mexico all week, and the Lobos have covered every game so far by the BetMGM blog's count. If Mingo returns and Fa'avae keeps improving as a passer, the offense is better than its September sample.
On the total. UTEP's defense has been run over by every FBS opponent, and New Mexico rushed for 253 last week, so the Lobos could reach 40 by themselves. Defensive and short-field scores push totals up as easily as they push margins, and New Mexico's defense forces them every week. A garbage-time UTEP touchdown late against reserves, the kind that produced 17 at Michigan, would be enough to tip a 38-10 game over. Altitude, a dry field and no wind all help offense, and our own model has the game seven points higher than the market.

Spread. The market case for New Mexico -22.5 is easy to state: the Lobos are 3-1, have held eight straight opponents to 20 or fewer, lost by only eight at Oklahoma, and UTEP has gained 198, 150 and 222 yards in its three FBS games while losing them by 51, 35 and 26. The line has moved toward the favorite all week, from 21 to 22.5. Our number is bigger still at 25.9, but that comes from a calibration map that stretches large margins, and the raw figure is 22. What I think the price leans on too heavily is how New Mexico built its margins. The Lobos are plus 14 in turnover margin through four games, a pace no team sustains, and they play slow and run first: 57 to 69 plays a game, with a quarterback who was named the full-time starter only this week and a receiver room missing two or three bodies. With a total of 48.5, laying 22.5 asks that offense for roughly five scores without short fields. I lean UTEP plus the points as a small position, not a bet, because the Miners offense gives me nothing to trust.
Total. The over case is real: UTEP's defense allowed 51, 52 and 33 to its FBS opponents, New Mexico scored 38 and 42 on the two weak FBS teams it has played, the weather is ideal, and our totals model reads 55.7. But that model is mostly last year's units and its 7.2 point gap sits well inside its own error. What I see on the field points lower. New Mexico runs 57 to 69 plays a game and leans on the run, UTEP has scored 24 points in three FBS games, and the Lobos have held eight straight opponents to 20 or fewer. A chunk of New Mexico's scoring has come off takeaways, which will not keep arriving at this rate. The market already took DraftKings from 53.5 to 48.5, so most of this is priced. I lean under 48.5 as a small position, not a bet.
Where our number looks wrong. Our -25.9 is the raw 22 run through a calibration map that the dossier itself says stretches big favorites, so the 3.3 point gap to the market is mostly an artifact and I give it no weight. The rating also learns from final margins only, and New Mexico's margins include a 70-7 win over an FCS team and scores inflated by a plus 14 turnover margin; it cannot see that the Lobos lost their starting quarterback before the season and run a slow, run-heavy offense. On the other side it may be too kind to UTEP, whose rating barely moved from the preseason prior despite three non-competitive FBS losses.
- Preview lists New Mexico favored by 21 with a total of 48.5; Fa'avae taking first-team reps; Mingo hopeful to return.
- UTEP preview: Colson the primary quarterback, More III a change of pace runner, no injuries reported; Eck noted UTEP's difficult schedule.
- Jack Layne out for the season after a second elbow surgery.
- UTEP box scores: 56 plays for 198 yards at Oklahoma, 43 plays for 150 yards at Michigan.
- New Mexico box scores: 69 plays for 364 yards against Central Michigan, 57 plays for 185 yards at Oklahoma in a 14-6 loss.
- New Mexico has allowed 20 or fewer points in eight straight games.
- UTEP managed 222 yards and 7 points against Oregon State and allowed 451 yards.
- FanDuel listing of New Mexico -22.5 and a total of 48.5; SportsGrid model projects New Mexico by 20.0 and sides with the over.
- Saturday forecast for Albuquerque: sunny, high near 75, calm wind.
- Albuquerque Journal preview: Fa'avae first team reps, Mingo could return, Colson stats
- Oregon State beat UTEP 33-7 at the Sun Bowl
On the spread. If UNM's offense (39 points per game, 70-7 and 38-7 wins) shows up against a UTEP defense allowing 36.5 per game, a margin of 28 or more is plausible. If instead UNM's offense looks like the Oklahoma game and Fa'avae struggles, UTEP covers easily with Colson's efficient passing.
On the total. A UNM team that scores 38 or more again, even with UTEP getting to 14, clears 48.5 comfortably. Fast scoring by a favorite in a blowout is the main over route.
Read Buck's full case
Spread. The strongest explanation for that number is the schedule: UNM is 3-1 with a 42-18 win at New Mexico State and a 6-14 loss at Oklahoma, while UTEP is 1-3 and lost 0-51 at Oklahoma, 17-52 at Michigan and 7-33 to Oregon State at home. Common opponent Oklahoma gave UNM a margin of minus 8 and UTEP minus 51, which is the whole story of the number. Against that, UNM scored only 6 against a real defense, and UTEP quarterback E.J. Colson has been efficient in the passing game. The line has crept from 21 to 22.5 at some books, so the move toward UNM is already in. I cannot find incremental evidence that the market has mispriced a 22.5 point spread in either direction, and a generic big underdog argument is not enough.
Total. The total sits at 48.5 everywhere, having opened as high as 53.5 at DraftKings and 49.5 at BetMGM and settled lower. The over case: UNM averages 39 points per game and UTEP gives up 36.5, and UTEP's offense has put up 51 against a weak opponent and 17 against Michigan. The under case: UNM's defense allows 11.5 per game, UTEP has scored 0, 7 and 17 against power conference opponents, and a lopsided game often leaves the favorite running the ball with a clock that keeps moving. Weather is clear, 70 degrees and calm, so it adds nothing. The number has already come down from the high opens, which absorbs most of the under case. I lean slightly toward the under at a price but do not hold a bet.

The call, written up
UTEP at New Mexico, New Mexico -22.5. The news favors New Mexico on its face: the Lobos are 3-1 and have allowed 20 or fewer points in eight straight games, while UTEP lost 33-7 to Oregon State on September 26 after gaining 222 yards. Stack notes the model stretches big favorites and that New Mexico is plus 14 in turnover margin through four games. The counter-case is that the Lobos rushed for 253 last week and force takeaways, so short fields could push the margin past 23. Buck had no view.
Under 48.5. DraftKings opened at 53.5 and now sits at 48.5, so much of the case is priced. The forecast is clear, 70 degrees, wind about 2 mph, so weather adds nothing. New Mexico has allowed 20 or fewer points in eight straight games, and UTEP scored 0, 17 and 7 in its three FBS games. The counter-case is New Mexico reaching 40 alone, as it did with 42 at New Mexico State. Take Under 48.5 at -105 at FanDuel.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
