Keys to the game
  • Akron lost 34-14 at Miami on October 17. Roggow went 22 for 38 for 234 yards and a touchdown, while four Akron turnovers became 21 Miami points.
  • Kent State recorded 228 yards, 15 first downs, 31:46 of possession and no offensive points in its October 17 loss at South Florida.
  • Broughton is listed questionable with a knee injury; Akron's last-game starter listing identifies Roggow at quarterback.
What beats it

On the spread. Kent State’s offense failed to score a touchdown at South Florida, and Akron’s Roggow produced 234 passing yards despite the four interceptions at Miami. If Akron protects the ball and Kent again stalls in the red zone, the home favorite does not justify laying three.

On the total. The market’s move upward may be correctly pricing Akron’s 18.9 points per game, weak defenses on both sides, clean weather and the chance that short fields or turnovers create scoring. Akron also passed for 234 yards last week.

Spread.Market first: Kent State’s two-point output at South Florida, alongside a season scoring average of 12, explains why a rivalry game between two losing teams is priced close to a field goal despite Kent being home. I lean Kent State, not a bet. Akron’s 34-14 loss at Miami included four interceptions, three of which Miami converted into 21 points, while Akron also allowed 324 rushing yards. Kent’s offense was poor at USF, but it moved the ball into scoring range three times and gained 228 yards against the stronger opponent. Our model’s Kent State number of minus 8.4 is much higher than the market, but its documented margin error and final-score learning prevent treating that gap as an edge. The case is a modest matchup and venue lean at minus 3 or better, not a signal to force action.

Total.Market first: the total rose from 42.5 to 46.5 at several captured books, which most plausibly reflects early adjustment away from an opener that was too low for two defenses allowing more than 32 points per game. I still lean under 46.5, not a bet, because the corrected number remains above the offensive evidence. Kent State averages 12 points and did not score an offensive point at South Florida, producing 3.4 yards per play. Akron scored 14 at Miami, but four interceptions handed Miami 21 points and masked an otherwise uneven output. Clear, mild weather removes the usual weather support for an under and makes the upward move meaningful. Our total model’s 49.73 forecast does not overcome its own stated lack of market edge and its inability to see current quarterback and skill-player availability.

Where our number looks wrong. The model makes Kent State materially stronger than the market despite Kent State averaging only 12 points and coming off a two-point game. Its final-margin inputs may be overvaluing Kent State’s narrow win over Ball State and underweighting its offensive limitations.

More key facts
  • Kent State generated 228 yards on 68 plays, went 0 for 3 in the red zone and recorded no offensive points against South Florida on October 17.
  • Akron lost 34-14 at Miami on October 17, with four turnovers and 21 Miami points off those turnovers.
  • Kent’s October 24 forecast calls for sunshine, a high near 59 degrees and south southwest wind near 7 mph.

Keys to the game
  • Broughton pulled in the first half at Minnesota with an apparent right knee injury, Roggow replaced him
  • Kent State lost 29-2 at South Florida, 31 second half yards, lost goal line fumble returned 96 yards
  • Akron 1-6, 0-3 MAC; Roggow 15 of 32, 180 yards, 3 INT at Central Michigan
What beats it

On the spread. Kent State's offense has produced 19 points in its last three games combined and turns red zone trips into nothing, so laying any points with it is uncomfortable. If Broughton returns healthy, Akron's offense with an up tempo spread is plausibly better than Kent State's and the line move from 3.5 to 3 suggests early money agrees with Akron.

On the total. Both defenses allow about 32 a game, Akron plays fast, the weather is benign, and Kent State scored 36 against Wofford and 26 against Ball State, so a couple of short field turnovers or a defensive score could push this over quickly. The market moved four points toward the over and our model sits above it.

Spread.Market first: Kent State -3 at home in a rivalry between two of the weakest MAC teams is close to a pure home field number, which says the market rates the teams roughly even on a neutral field. That is defensible. Against FBS opponents Akron has lost by 22, 34, 28, 24, 2 and 20; Kent State by 57, 56, 31 and 27 with a 13 point win over Ball State and a 3 point loss to Ohio. In MAC play the two profiles look alike. What tips me slightly to Kent State is Akron personnel: starting quarterback Cibastian Broughton left the Minnesota game on Sept 19 with a right knee injury and our Covers scan still lists him questionable, with backup Brayden Roggow throwing 3 interceptions at Central Michigan, and three Akron receivers listed out. The problem is Kent State's offense, which has scored 10, 7 and 2 in its last three. The spread moved from 3.5 to 3, against my side. This is a lean, not a bet.

Total.Market first: the total opened 42.5 to 45.5 and has been bet to 46 to 46.5, presumably on two defenses allowing 32 a game and Akron's up tempo spread, and our model agrees at 49.7. I lean the other way. Kent State has scored 10, 7 and 2 in its last three and about 8 a game against FBS teams. Akron is on a backup quarterback with three receivers listed out and has scored 16, 7, 10, 17, 23 and 14 against FBS opponents. Even granting each defense is bad, a sensible projection lands each side in the high teens to about 20, which sits below 46.5. The weather is clear and calm, which removes an under argument but does not create an over one. Lean under, not a bet, because the opening move went the other way and both defenses are genuinely poor.

Where our number looks wrong. Our -8.4 credits Kent State with a rating gap the box scores do not show: Kent State has scored 8 points a game against FBS opponents and has not looked six points better than Akron in conference play. The Akron rating also does not see that Akron has played mostly with a backup quarterback since mid September, which cuts both ways because the losses it learned from were already with that backup.

  • Captured spread Kent State -3 (FanDuel -2.5), Akron plus 3 at -110 to -115, opening -3 to -3.5
  • Akron QB Broughton questionable, three WRs and RB Gee out; Kent State RB, two WRs and K out
What beats it

On the spread. If Broughton sits and the receiver room stays gutted, Akron may be unable to score and Kent State's home field and the fact that it has beaten Ball State this year carry the cover. Kent State has also been outscored 67 to 9 in its last two games, so either side can collapse.

On the total. Both defenses give up about 32 points a game and Akron scored 45 against Robert Morris; short fields and turnovers can push this over with ease. The market move up may reflect real information I could not see.

Spread. The market makes Kent State a 3 point home favorite, which is a pick'em plus normal home field between two bad MAC teams. The strongest explanation for that number is simple: Kent State is at home and Akron has a long injury list (RB Gee out, WRs Monteiro, Riggins and Sivon out, QB Broughton and RB Patrick questionable per the Covers scan of 10/21). Kent State is not healthy either (RB Armentrout, WRs Stephens and Bierfeldt, K Tucker out), and the Golden Flashes have scored 12 points a game with a 2-5 record, including 2 points at South Florida and 7 at Western Michigan. Akron has been slightly better on the scoreboard at 18.9 points a game and lost to Eastern Michigan by 2. I could not find any live preview, beat writer note or confirmed QB status this week, so the injury edge cannot be priced with confidence. Akron plus 3 is a thin lean on the hook and the better offensive output, not a bet.

Total. The total has climbed from openers of 42.5 to 45.5 up to 46.5 at most books, which is a sizable move on a game between two teams averaging a combined 30.9 points scored per game. Kent State scores 12.0 a game and just managed 2 and 7 in its last two road games. Akron is missing three receivers and its lead back, and its QB is questionable. Weather is clear, 60 degrees and 4 mph wind, so nothing there pushes the number either way. The case for the over is that both defenses allow about 32 points a game and the market may be reading that, plus Kent State's K Tucker being out could push drives toward fourth down attempts. Still, with both offenses depleted at skill spots, the market looks stretched at 46.5. A lean on the under, not a bet, since I found no live news to confirm the injury picture.
