Keys to the game
  • Sacramento State reported 53 total points in six losses, no offensive touchdown in the first three quarters against an FBS opponent, and a 1 to 6 record entering this game.
  • Ball State reported Luster’s 195 passing yards, 125 rushing yards and the Cardinals’ 32 to 31 overtime victory at Bowling Green.
  • The injury listing showed five Sacramento State skill players out and one tight end questionable, plus multiple Ball State skill players questionable.
What beats it

On the spread. Ball State has allowed 37.9 points per game and its own reported receiver, tight end and running back availability is unsettled. If those absences materially reduce Luster’s supporting cast, Sacramento State can stay within two touchdowns despite its offensive limitations.

On the total. Ball State allowed 37.9 points per game through seven contests and Sacramento State’s recent opponents scored 35, 38 and 48. A Ball State offensive breakout, defensive or special teams scores, or late Hornets garbage-time production defeats the under.

Spread.Market first: the five point move from Ball State minus 9.5 to minus 14.5 is best explained by Sacramento State’s disastrous FBS transition, five straight losses, and an offense that has not scored an offensive touchdown in the first three quarters of an FBS game. Ball State’s overtime win at Bowling Green and Keldric Luster’s productive dual threat performance reinforce that case, while Sacramento State’s reported skill position absences deepen it. That information is mostly in the price, and public support is also heavily on Ball State, so this is a lean rather than a bet. At the better captured Ball State minus 14, the Hornets’ offense remains too limited for me to oppose the favorite. Our spread model has no number because Sacramento State is unrated, so it supplies no independent edge.

Total.Market first: the total rose from 49.5 to 50.5 at opening to 51 or 51.5, likely reflecting Ball State’s 32 point overtime output at Bowling Green and its improved recent yardage. The under case is Sacramento State specific, not a generic low total call. Its team preview documents only 53 points over six losses, with 10 offensive points or fewer in every FBS game, and the reported absent backs and receivers make a sustained response harder to project. Ball State can drive scoring itself against a weak defense, which prevents a bet, but the mild, low wind forecast removes any need to discount the current total further.

Where our number looks wrong. The model is appropriately silent because Sacramento State is unrated, but its FCS transition blind spot, flat home field input and lack of injury or quarterback context make it especially unsuitable for creating a spread edge here.

More key facts
  • Sacramento State’s official preview states that it has totaled 53 points in six losses and was limited to 10 offensive points or fewer in each FBS game.
  • Ball State reported 370, 360 and 435 yards of total offense in its last three games.
  • The forecast showed a mild Saturday with wind near 7 mph in Muncie.

Keys to the game
  • Ohio 48, Sacramento State 7; Hornets 1-6, 0-4 MAC, five straight losses.
  • Ball State 32, Bowling Green 31 in OT; Luster 195 passing and 125 rushing yards.
  • Preview posted earlier this week (exact date not shown) had Ball State -10.5 to -11.5 with totals 50.5 to 51.5.
What beats it

On the spread. A 14.5 point favorite that is 2-5 with a defense allowing 37.9 points per game is not a team that reliably wins by margin; Ball State's receiver room carries several questionable tags, and a homecoming game with a big lead invites a soft fourth quarter and a backdoor score. The move from 9.5 may also be an overreaction to one bad Ohio result.

On the total. Sacramento State's defense has allowed 28 or more in six of seven, Ball State scored 41 on Stony Brook and 32 at Bowling Green, and a 45 to 10 type game alone clears the number; the total has also been bet up, and perfect weather plus a defensive or special teams score from either side can push it over.

Spread.Market first: the number opened Ball State -9.5 at DraftKings, BetMGM and FanDuel on 10/18 and has been bet to -14 to -14.5 everywhere, so the market has already repriced Sacramento State after a 48-7 home loss to Ohio. We have no model number because Sacramento State is unrated in its first FBS season, so this is a pure read on form. The Hornets, under first year coach Alonzo Carter, have scored 3, 10, 6, 10 and 7 in their last five, all losses, including 6-35 to Massachusetts. Common opponent Bowling Green: Ball State won 32-31 in overtime on the road while Sacramento State lost 10-38 there. Ball State's quarterback Keldric Luster ran for 125 yards and threw for 195 in that win, and the Hornets are listed without two running backs, a tight end and two receivers. Ball State is a homecoming home side whose losses came mostly to Ohio State, Liberty and Northwestern. I side with Ball State, but the move from 9.5 to 14.5 has eaten most of the value, and Ball State's own receiver injury list caps it at a lean.

Total.Market first: 51 to 51.5 reflects Ball State's defense allowing 37.9 per game, and six of seven Ball State games went past 51. Against that, Sacramento State has scored 3, 10, 6, 10 and 7 in its last five, and four of its seven games finished under 51. The Ball State overs came against Ohio State, Liberty, Toledo and Northwestern, offenses far better than this one. A likely script is Ball State in the low 30s with a run heavy quarterback and the Hornets in the low teens, which lands in the mid 40s. Our totals model at 53.1 is mostly built on last season's FCS scoring and does not see the current offense or the Hornets' missing backs and receivers. Calm, dry weather at 68 degrees removes any weather help for the under, so this is a lean, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. There is no spread number at all because Sacramento State is unrated, which is a gap for a full MAC member playing a full FBS schedule; the totals model also leans on last season's 33.8 points per game FCS offense that bears no resemblance to the current 15 per game team.

More key facts
  • Sacramento State in first FBS season in the MAC under first year coach Alonzo Carter.
  • Ohio 48, Sacramento State 7 with the Hornets' only score a fourth quarter touchdown pass.
  • Ball State and Bowling Green tied 17 late in regulation before a 32-31 OT finish.

Keys to the game
  • Preview coverage confirms 3:30pm ET kickoff, Ball State homecoming and Ball State as favorite
  • Betting preview lists Ball State as favorite with scoring averages 20.3 for and 37.9 against, and Sacramento State 15.0 for and 32.7 against
What beats it

On the spread. Ball State could win comfortably at home against a team that scored 7 and 10 in its last two road or conference games, with the Sacramento State skill group depleted. Or Ball State's defense could leak enough points that a cover of 14.5 is out of reach even in a win.

On the total. Ball State allows 37.9 per game and Sacramento State 32.7, and a 38-30 type game clears the number easily. Short fields from turnovers and a home team that scored 32 last week argue for the over.

Spread. The market has moved Ball State from 9.5 to 14.5 at most books, and the strongest explanation is plain: Sacramento State is a first-year FBS side that has been outscored badly (lost 38-10 at Bowling Green and 48-7 to Ohio last week) and its dossier injury list shows four skill players out (two RBs, a WR, a TE). Ball State is also poor, but it won at Bowling Green 32-31 two weeks ago, which gives a rough common-opponent line of Ball State by about two touchdowns. That matches the number, so the move looks like it already prices the news. I found no fresh public injury report or betting split that adds anything beyond the lines. Laying 14.5 with a team that allows 37.9 per game is uncomfortable, and taking 14.5 with an offense scoring 15 per game is no better. No incremental edge either way.

Total. The market total of 51 to 51.5 is high relative to how these offenses are performing: Sacramento State averages 15 points and Ball State 20.3, and Sacramento State is missing two running backs, a receiver and a tight end, which should lean the offense toward short drives and clock use. The over case is real, since both defenses allow 33 and 38 points per game and Ball State just played a 32-31 game. Weather is mild (68F, light wind, no rain) so it adds nothing. A big Ball State win with a running-clock finish also trims points. I hold a small lean to the under at 51 or better, not a bet, because the defenses are bad enough that a lopsided score with 50 or more total points is easy to see.
