Spread.Louisiana Tech +19.5 is a modest price-based lean. EL makes Baylor -8, but I reject interpreting that discrepancy as an 11-point betting edge. Tech's offensive collapse against LSU and Baylor's rebuilt defensive front justify a substantially bigger favorite. Conversely, Tech recorded 11 tackles for loss at LSU, giving it a plausible way to disrupt Baylor while the Bears' quarterback situation remains unresolved. Baylor also played last week without starting center Koltin Sieracki and receiver Jadon Porter; their Saturday availability is unverified. The captured move from DraftKings -17.5 to -19.5 already prices considerable Baylor superiority, while the falling total makes a three-touchdown margin more demanding. Bennett's successful relief start is the strongest counterargument: Baylor need not have Lagway to dominate. I retain the dossier's timestamped DraftKings +19.5 because conflicting public listings could not be established as newer executable quotes. This is a small lean, with Tech's ability to sustain drives the primary risk.

Total.Under 53.5 is the stronger position. EL's 56.56 projection depends heavily on historical scoring, whereas Baylor's new defensive coordinator and rebuilt front challenge that baseline. Tech produced only one offensive touchdown at LSU, on a fourth-quarter explosive play; sustained scoring is the concern. Unresolved Baylor quarterback, center and receiver availability adds downside without assuming anyone is out Saturday. The over deserves respect: Bennett led a comfortable win, warm weather and light winds favor execution, and defensive pressure can generate short fields or return touchdowns. Also, the captured decline from 55.5 means much of the under case is already priced. Nevertheless, I prefer the remaining 53.5 at BetMGM to chasing FanDuel's 52.5. No verified tempo change supports an additional pace adjustment.

Where our number looks wrong.Baylor -8 likely understates the defensive mismatch. Final margins obscure Tech's defensive touchdown and offensive failure at LSU, while the 80-point FCS opener is a poor guide to this matchup. Baylor hired Joe Klanderman and rebuilt its defensive front, making last year's defensive baseline questionable. The model's 56.56 total consequently looks high. Baylor's own reports also conflict on Bennett's exact passing statistics, so I avoid treating those figures as settled.

Spread. This is the game where I think our own number is simply wrong. Louisiana Tech's rating is an 80-6 win over FCS Northwestern State; its one FBS test was a first half at LSU with zero net yards and no first downs, its only points before halftime coming on a pick-six. Baylor's defense allows 10.0 points a game, 15th in FBS, held Auburn to 17 in a one-point loss and gave up 70 first-half yards to Prairie View. Baylor also controls the clock at 32:32 while Louisiana Tech ranks 133rd at 25:22, which is the profile of a favorite that keeps scoring while the dog goes three-and-out. The real risk is DJ Lagway's high ankle sprain and the Big 12 opener against Colorado on 9/26. I want the best number: -18.5 at FanDuel, not -19.5.

Total. The market has already been moving my way - every book has come down from 55 or 55.5 to 52.5 or 53.5 - and I still think there is room. Baylor's defense is 15th nationally at 10.0 points allowed and Louisiana Tech's offense has produced seven offensive points against the only real defense it has faced. Baylor's own offense ranks 75th at 30.0 points and scored 16 against Auburn, with a starting quarterback whose high ankle sprain is unresolved and a backup who threw two interceptions last week. Baylor also averages 32:32 of possession, which suppresses total plays. My honest projection is something like Baylor 34, Louisiana Tech 13. The over case is a hot, still, 97-degree afternoon, a Louisiana Tech defense ranked 92nd, and a Bulldogs offense that goes three-and-out fast enough to hand the ball back 14 times.

Where our number looks wrong.Badly, and in the exact way the dossier warns about: 'against an FCS opponent the number is least reliable.' Louisiana Tech sits at minus-1.04 in the in-season rating, barely below a preseason prior of minus-0.746, because the refit fed on an 80-6 win over Northwestern State. Strip that game out and what remains is an offense that produced zero yards in a half against LSU and seven offensive points all night. Baylor at plus-3.612 is meanwhile under-credited: the rating sees a one-point loss and a 41-point FCS win and has no idea that the loss came against an SEC team without its starting quarterback for part of it, or that the defense is top-fifteen nationally in scoring. Our minus-8 would make sense if Louisiana Tech were the team its rating describes. It is not. I would put fair at Baylor by about 20, which is roughly where the market is and about twelve points from where we are. This is the game on my slate where I would most want the calibration map revisited before any FCS blowout enters the refit.

Spread.Baylor's line has moved up all week, from -17.5/-18 open on 2026-09-13 to -18.5/-19.5 now, even though QB DJ Lagway's ankle status for this game is unresolved as of my research. Lagway suffered a high-ankle sprain against Auburn in Week 1 (333 yards, 2 TDs before leaving) and sat out Week 2's 44-3 win over FCS Prairie View A&M with Nate Bennett starting; I could not find a 2026-09-14 practice report confirming whether Lagway will play Saturday, which is a real known-unknown the market appears to be pricing optimistically. Our own model shows an -11.1 gap ('Pick'), seeing Baylor as only an 8-point favorite versus the market's roughly 19. Baylor's best 2026 output (44-3) came against an FCS opponent with the backup quarterback in, a thinner signal than the market number assumes. Louisiana Tech hung within a field goal at LSU into the second quarter (trailing 10-7) before fading; if Bennett or a limited Lagway starts again against a real Sun Belt front, I like Louisiana Tech to keep this closer than 19.

Total.Louisiana Tech is averaging 47 ppg (inflated by an 80-6 FCS blowout) and Baylor 30 ppg; both offenses can move the ball when at full strength. The forecast is hot and dry (95F, 8.3 mph wind), which in Texas in September tends to tire both lines late and can open up scoring as much as it drains players. The Lagway question cuts against the over if he sits again (Bennett was efficient but conservative against an FCS defense), but Louisiana Tech's defense has already shown it can be had, allowing 45 points to LSU. I lean Over, lightly, with real uncertainty tied to the Baylor QB situation.

Where our number looks wrong. The model is working off Baylor's full-strength Week 1 performance against Auburn and Louisiana Tech's preseason priors, and it has no way to weigh Lagway's ankle, Baylor's other receiver injuries (Williams Jr. out since Aug 21, Porter questionable), or that Baylor's best 2026 output came against an FCS opponent with the backup quarterback in. Those all argue the true gap could be smaller than even our -11.1 read suggests, not larger.

On the spread

Louisiana Tech at Baylor, Baylor -19. The line opened -17.5 to -18 on September 13 and has climbed all week to -18.5 to -19.5. Baylor quarterback DJ Lagway suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Week 1 loss to Auburn and sat out the September 12 win over Prairie View, where backup Nate Bennett went 23 of 35 for 301 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions; Lagway's status for Saturday is unresolved. Louisiana Tech had zero net yards in the first half at LSU on September 12 and lost 45-14, its only first-half points coming on an interception return. Our model has Baylor favored by only 8 points against a market number of 19.1, an 11.1-point gap the panel majority confirmed as a strong lean. The dissenting panel argues our model is simply wrong here, pointing to Baylor's top-15 scoring defense and a Louisiana Tech rating inflated by an 80-6 FCS win. Take Louisiana Tech +19.5 (FanDuel).

On the total

Under 53.5. The total has fallen at every book since September 13, from 55 or 55.5 down to 52.5 to 53.5 now. Baylor's defense allows 10 points a game, 15th in FBS, while Louisiana Tech has scored just seven offensive points against the only real defense it has faced, at LSU on September 12. The dissenting panel takes the over, citing 95-degree heat and Louisiana Tech's defense allowing 45 points to LSU. Take Under 53.5 (DraftKings).
