Old Dominion at App State. Lean: App State -9.5. Lean: Under 50.5.
The call
The panelists
- ODU lost 42-10 at Georgia State. Henicle completed 8 of 15 passes for 49 yards.
- Huff made his first career start against James Madison and passed for 261 yards.
- App State designated the ODU game as its October 10 Homecoming game.
On the spread. If Ryan Huff resumes the starting role and gives ODU the passing production shown against James Madison, App State’s defense and the inflated post-move price make laying nearly double digits unattractive.
On the total. App State’s offense has consistently reached the mid 20s or better, and ODU’s defense has allowed 88 points over its last two games, so an App State-led scoring burst defeats the under even if ODU remains inefficient.

Spread. The market is reasonably explained before using our rating: ODU is 1-4, has changed quarterbacks during the last two games, and just managed 10 points in a 42-10 loss at Georgia State. App State returns from an open date to a homecoming crowd after a competitive 41-31 loss at NC State. The move from DraftKings -5.5 to -9.5 and the broader -9.5 to -10 market have already charged for that contrast. I still lean App State at the available -9.5, as ODU’s 49 passing yards from Quinn Henicle last week leave a difficult path to staying attached if App starts cleanly. But the market has moved four points, and the visitor’s quarterback usage is not officially settled. Our -12.6 supports the direction but is not a usable edge given its documented ATS failure. Pass, lean App State -9.5.
Total. The under is the stronger directional case, but not a bet. The total fell from 51.5 to 50 or 50.5 across the captured board, so the market has already reacted to ODU’s offensive struggles. ODU scored 10 at Georgia State, with Henicle producing only 49 passing yards, and now travels for a second consecutive road game. The under retains some appeal at 50.5 because a limited Monarch offense can leave App State carrying most of the scoring burden, while the kickoff forecast is cool with moderate wind. The over case is real: App State has scored at least 26 points in all four games and ODU has allowed 42 and 46 in its past two. Pass, lean under 50.5.
Where our number looks wrong. The -12.6 rating likely overstates App State by treating four final margins, including FCS Maine, as durable signal while it cannot price ODU’s quarterback rotation, roster overhaul or the information behind the four-point market move.
- DraftKings splits showed App State -9.5 with 65% of handle and 42% of bets when checked.
- ODU scored 10 points at Georgia State, and Henicle completed 8 of 15 for 49 yards.
- App State lost 41-31 at NC State on September 27 after scoring 31 points.
- Boone’s October 10 forecast showed partly sunny conditions and 60 degrees at 1 p.m.
- Georgia State beat Old Dominion 42-10; ODU had 146 total yards and Henicle was 8 of 15 for 49 yards.
- Henicle missed the JMU game with an undisclosed injury; Huff started, 20 of 39 for 261 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT.
- ODU ranked 133rd in total offense at 287.5 yards per game entering the Georgia State game.
On the spread. App State has not beaten an FBS team by more than 5 this season and its defense allowed 41 at NC State; ODU allowed 42 and 46 in its last two but the 9/26 game with Huff produced 261 passing yards, and a backdoor cover late against a soft prevent look is very live at 9.5 to 10. The steam may simply be an overreaction to one ugly box score.
On the total. If App State gets to 38 or more against a defense that allowed 42 and 46 in its last two, ODU only needs 13 to push this over, and Huff's 261 yard game against JMU shows ODU can throw for garbage time points.

Spread.Market first: App State is a 9.5 to 10 point home favorite because Old Dominion has collapsed. The Monarchs are 1-4 after losing 46-20 to James Madison and 42-10 at Georgia State, where they managed 146 total yards and Quinn Henicle, back from an undisclosed injury, went 8 of 15 for 49 yards. They returned very little production and ranked near the bottom of FBS in total offense entering Week 5. DraftKings opened App State minus 5.5 on 10/4 and the whole market now sits at 9.5 to 10, so most of that collapse is already priced. App State adds a bye week (idle 10/3), a quarterback in Malachi Singleton averaging about 300 passing yards a game, and a home game in Boone against a team that cannot sustain drives. Against that, App State's FBS wins came by 3 and 5 points and its defense gave up 41 at NC State. I lean App State at 9.5 or 10, not a bet.
Total. The total opened 51 to 51.5 and has been bet down to 50 to 50.5 across all five books. The over case: App State has scored 26 or more in every game, Singleton throws for about 300 a game, and ODU allowed 42 and 46 in its last two. The under case: ODU has scored 10, 17 and 20 against FBS teams and fell to 146 yards last week, so it may not hold up its end, and App State's two other FBS wins finished at 47 and 51 total points. A realistic script is App State in the low 30s and ODU in the teens, landing near the number. Forecast wind near 11 mph is mild. I hold a slight lean to the under at 50.5 only.
Where our number looks wrong. Our minus 12.6 leans on ODU's in-season collapse and is directionally fine, but App State's rating is inflated by a 55-3 FCS win, and its three FBS games were a 3 point win, a 5 point win and a 10 point loss, so App State's margin against FBS teams is thinner than its rating implies. The model also cannot see ODU's quarterback instability.
- App State lost 41-31 at NC State; Singleton passed for 317 yards and 2 TDs, App State outgained NC State 349-304 in the second half.
- App State schedule shows no game on 10/3 and Old Dominion at home on 10/10.
- Singleton has 1,206 passing yards, 301.5 per game, 7 TDs.
- FanDuel lists App State minus 9.5, total 50.5.
- ODU totaled 146 yards in a 42-10 loss at Georgia State.
- App State results: 55-3 Maine, 27-24 at ECU, 26-21 Charlotte, 31-41 at NC State.
- Singleton averages 301.5 passing yards per game.
- Prior-season reporting indicates Quinn Henicle was Old Dominion's quarterback with an undisclosed injury; the year of that article is unclear and could not be tied to this week.
- Captured lines and line history from the pipeline dossier: App State minus 9.5 to 10, total 50 to 50.5.
On the spread. Old Dominion's offense has scored 10 to 21 in four of five games and its defense has allowed 42 or more three times; if the quarterback situation is poor, App State at home can win by two touchdowns. App State's offense at 34.8 points per game and 3-1 record supports the favorite.
On the total. If Old Dominion's offense stays at around 20 points, the under cashes easily; if it keeps allowing 40 plus, the over cashes with App State alone near 35.

Spread.Market-first: the number of App State minus 9.5 to 10 is easy to explain. Old Dominion is 1-4 with a 21-44 loss at Virginia Tech, a 20-46 home loss to James Madison and a 10-42 loss at Georgia State, scoring 19.8 per game while allowing 32.4, and it returns only 9.2 percent of production after a 10-3 season. App State is 3-1 at home with 34.8 points per game, and its only loss was 31-41 at NC State. The market has priced a collapsed roster against a competent home side. The one soft spot is the lack of proof the spread is wrong: DraftKings opened near 5.5 and moved to 9.5, so the move toward App State already happened, and a double-digit number for a team that lost a conference game to Charlotte-type margins (26-21 over Charlotte) leaves some room for the home side to under-deliver. I lean Old Dominion at the best captured plus number but hold no real edge. I could not verify quarterback status or any availability news for either team from current sources, so this is a lean, not a bet.
Total. No view on the total. The market has dropped from about 51.5 to 50 to 50.5, a small move toward the under. The over case: both defenses are bad, Old Dominion allows 32.4 per game and has given up 42 or more three times, and App State scores 34.8. The under case: Old Dominion scores only 19.8 per game and could fall behind and bleed clock, and App State has two games decided by 5 or fewer points. Combined scoring of 54.6 for App State's games suggests a fair line and the forecast is mild, so I see no weather angle. I could not verify quarterback status for Old Dominion, which matters for pace and scoring. A pure coin flip on missing information.
- Pipeline captured totals of 50 to 50.5 across five books.
The call, written up
Old Dominion is 1-4 and managed 146 yards and 10 points in a 42-10 loss at Georgia State on Oct. 3, with Quinn Henicle throwing for 49 yards, while App State comes off an Oct. 3 open date to a home game in Boone with Malachi Singleton passing for about 300 yards a game; DraftKings moving from -5.5 to -9.5 shows much of that is already priced.
The total fell from 51 to 51.5 at open to 50 to 50.5 at every book, and Old Dominion has scored 21 or fewer in all four FBS games, leaving App State to carry the scoring. Take under 50.5 at -112 at FanDuel.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.

Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins.
