Arkansas State at Southern Miss. Lean: Under 62.5. No call on the spread.
The call
The panelists
- Anderson reported Briggs out for the season, Sledge out four to six weeks, and Lassiter expected to return.
- A-State totaled 516 yards and Owens passed for 418 yards against South Alabama.
- Southern Miss allowed Troy 437 rushing yards in a 55-34 loss.
On the spread. Southern Miss's extra rest, home field, and Landry Lyddy's 316 passing yards at Troy can turn this into a shootout, while A-State's 56 points allowed leave little room for a favorite to separate.
On the total. Owens and Lyddy both enter after high-volume passing performances, and either defense repeating last week's tackling and coverage failures would make 62 too low.

Spread.Market first: Arkansas State laying 6.5 to 7 reflects Southern Miss's four-game skid, its 55-point defensive collapse at Troy, and its confirmed loss of RB Robert Briggs. The number also credits A-State's 516-yard, 49-point performance against South Alabama. The strongest case for Southern Miss is that A-State allowed 56 points last week and the market is asking the visitor to clear a full touchdown on the road. Our model calls Southern Miss plus 2.3, but its documented margin error and final-score-only inputs make that disagreement insufficient. I lean Arkansas State minus 7 at plus money, not a bet, because Southern Miss has an extra recovery window and the Red Wolves' defense has not shown it can close a game cleanly.
Total.Market first: the total rose from 56.5 to 61.5 openings to 62 to 62.5 after each team played a 105-point game. That adjustment is rational. A-State generated 516 yards and Southern Miss generated 512 at Troy, with both quarterbacks producing explosive plays. The under case is price, not a claim that either defense is sound. At 62, the market already assumes another unusually clean offensive game despite a 12 mph captured wind forecast, Southern Miss losing its leading available running option, and both staffs addressing execution failures. The over remains live through Owens and Lyddy, plus each defense's recent breakdowns.
Where our number looks wrong. The model's Southern Miss plus 2.3 number is too charitable to a 76-newcomer roster whose coach identified assignment errors, tackling failures, and turnover problems. It also cannot price Briggs's season-ending injury or the current quarterback changes.
- A-State scored 49 points on 516 yards against South Alabama.
- Southern Miss had 512 yards, including 391 passing yards, in its 55-34 loss at Troy.
- Southern Miss confirmed Briggs is out for the season.
- Ethan Hampton estimated return 10/31/2026 after hand injury
- Hampton expected to miss significant time with a hand fracture; Lyddy becomes starter
- Arkansas State 2-4 and coming off a 56-49 loss to South Alabama; Southern Miss 1-4
On the spread. Southern Miss has lost three of four games by 23 or more, gave up 55 at Troy last time out, and is thin at receiver; if Lyddy struggles the way the offense did against Auburn, Arkansas State and quarterback Trey Owens can cover a touchdown easily, and the Dimers projection already has the visitors by nine.
On the total. Both defenses are bad enough that either offense can score 35, Arkansas State threw for big numbers in a 49 point game last week, and a market move this large across every book usually reflects sharp over money rather than recency noise.

Spread.Market first: Arkansas State is laid 7 on the road because Southern Miss is 1-4, has been blown out by Auburn, UConn and Troy, and is playing without its opening day quarterback Ethan Hampton (hand fracture, Rotowire estimated return 10/31) and two receivers on our Covers scan. Our number has Southern Miss +2.3, a 4.6 point gap, but the rating sees none of those absences, so most of the gap is explained by information the market has and we do not. What keeps a small lean on the home side is that 7 is a key number, Landry Lyddy has already started for weeks and beat this same opponent in relief last year, and Arkansas State is no road juggernaut: among the lowest returning production in our preseason data, losses at Memphis, TCU and Louisiana, and 56 allowed at home to South Alabama in its last game. Laying a full touchdown on the road with that defense is not something I would do. I would take Southern Miss +7 as a lean only, not at 6.5, and not as a bet.
Total. The over case is real: these teams just played 89 and 105 point games, both defenses have been shredded, and the market moved from 56.5 to 57.5 at the open up to 62.5 at every major book. The under case: Southern Miss is on its backup quarterback with two receivers out, has scored 8, 20 and 21 in three of four FBS games, and the forecast carries 12 mph wind. Our totals model sits at 55.9, but it is a candidate model that the market beats out of sample. The move of five to six points looks like it has priced the recent shootouts in full, so I hold a thin under lean at 62.5, not a bet.
Where our number looks wrong. The rating does not know Southern Miss is on its backup quarterback and missing two receivers, so its Southern Miss +2.3 is too generous to the home side; most of the 4.6 point gap to the market is that missing injury information, not an edge.
- Arkansas State -6.5, total 62.5, projected score 35-26
- Total 62.5 at Dimers, consistent with captured quotes
- Hampton out with estimated return 10/31
- Hampton expected out four to six weeks with a hand fracture; Lyddy is the starter in his absence
- Lyddy remains the starter while Hampton is out, estimated return 10/31
On the spread. Southern Miss at home with a competent backup quarterback could keep it close against a defense that gave up 56 to South Alabama. The opposite case is that Southern Miss has lost four straight by double digits in three of them and Arkansas State should score freely.
On the total. Both defenses are giving up 50 plus in recent games, Arkansas State just played to a 49-56 game, and totals in poor Sun Belt matchups often run past the number. Southern Miss scored 34 at Troy even with the backup quarterback.

Spread. The market makes Arkansas State a 7 point road favorite, which is the strongest explanation for the number: Southern Miss is 1-4, lost 34-55 at Troy last time out, and has been without starting quarterback Ethan Hampton since a hand fracture in the UConn loss, with Landry Lyddy starting. Arkansas State is 2-4 with a softer résumé of one-score losses but also a 49-56 home loss to South Alabama. Both teams are poor and both defenses leak points, so a 7 point spread between two similarly flawed Sun Belt sides is not obviously wrong. I found no incremental news this week that the number misses: no confirmed Arkansas State quarterback or skill-position news beyond a season-ending running back loss, and no Southern Miss update beyond Hampton's extended absence. Taking the home points is the generic underdog narrative without new evidence, so I do not hold a view on the side.
Total. The total opened 56.5 to 61.5 and has risen to 62.5, so the market has already priced a high scoring game after both teams allowed big numbers in recent weeks. Strongest case for the over: Southern Miss allowed 55 at Troy and Arkansas State allowed 56 to South Alabama, and neither defense is stopping anyone. The case for the under is that this number now asks for more than either team's season scoring average combined with the other's average allowed would suggest, roughly 59, and Southern Miss is playing a backup quarterback with its top two receivers also listed out. Forecast shows 65 degrees and clear with 12 mph wind, which is a mild drag. I lean under at 62 to 62.5 but it is a small lean, not a bet.
- Southern Miss QB Hampton out four to six weeks, Lyddy starting
The call, written up
Arkansas State at Southern Miss, Arkansas State -7. No pick. The line sits at 7 at most books and 6.5 at FanDuel. The case for Arkansas State: Southern Miss is 1-4 and allowed 437 rushing yards in a 55-34 loss at Troy (Southern Miss athletics, Oct. 7), coach Blake Anderson said on Oct. 12 that running back Robert Briggs is out for the season, and quarterback Ethan Hampton remains out with a hand fracture, with Rotowire estimating an Oct. 31 return (Oct. 14). The case for Southern Miss: 7 is a key number, Landry Lyddy has started for weeks, and Arkansas State allowed 56 at home to South Alabama on Oct. 8. Our rating has Southern Miss +2.3 but sees none of those absences. No pick on the spread.
Under 62.5. The total opened 56.5 to 61.5 and has climbed to 62 to 62.5 after two shootouts: Southern Miss lost 55-34 at Troy on Oct. 6 and Arkansas State lost 56-49 to South Alabama on Oct. 8. The captured forecast has 12 mph wind, a mild drag. Southern Miss plays without Hampton, and receivers G. Page and J. Himes are listed out on an Oct. 14 Covers scan. The counter-case: both defenses just allowed 55 or more, and a move this large across every book can reflect informed over money. Under 62.5 at -110 at BetMGM.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
