Liberty at Coastal Carolina. Lean: Under 50.5. No call on the spread.
The call
The panelists
- Purdie has started all three games; he completed 13-of-20 passes for 211 yards and three touchdowns against Ball State.
- Purdie rebounded after being pulled against Gardner-Webb; Liberty's third-down conversions improved from 2-of-12 to 10-of-13.
- Coastal gained 385 yards at Delaware and was stopped on fourth down at the Delaware 13 late in the fourth quarter.
On the spread. Bailey’s explosive passing and Coastal’s better-than-score production at Delaware can overturn the Liberty matchup advantage. If Liberty’s offensive-line depth remains compromised, pressure and gusty conditions could erase its downfield advantage; that downside makes laying the current price unattractive.
On the total. If gusts ease or affect the field less than forecast, both quarterbacks can generate explosive touchdowns against vulnerable defensive units. Coastal's poor finishing at Delaware could reverse, while short fields or special-teams mistakes would defeat an under even with modest play volume.

Spread. The strongest explanation for Liberty -2.5/-3 is its passing matchup against Coastal’s vulnerable secondary, reinforced by Purdie’s rebound against Ball State. Coastal also returns from Delaware on a short week. Those explanations fit the move toward Liberty without assuming informed injury money. Our supplied number, Liberty -1.3, disagrees modestly; its unproven ATS record gives no reason to automatically oppose the market. I lean Liberty because its offensive matchup is more persuasive than the rating gap. However, Purdie was pulled against Gardner-Webb before rebounding, and Liberty’s third-down conversions jumped from 2-of-12 to 10-of-13. That improvement needs regression rather than extrapolation. Coastal’s 14 points last week also conceal 385 offensive yards and a late failed scoring opportunity. Bailey gives the home team a credible explosive-passing countercase. The best captured Liberty -2.5 costs -112, and the favorable matchup appears substantially priced. I would require -1.5 at -110; this is a pass, not a normal-unit wager.
Total. The strongest market explanation for 50 to 50.5 is that wind and inconsistent offensive execution have already pulled the total down from the receipt’s initial 52 to 54.5 range. The under case is matchup-specific: both quarterbacks attack deep, while NWS forecasts north winds around 13 to 14 mph with 25-mph gusts near kickoff. Published play counts are approximately 65 per team, offering no obvious volume cushion. The over case deserves equal weight: Bailey has eight touchdown passes without an interception, Liberty just scored 51, and Coastal moved the ball better than its 14-point result suggests. A few completed deep shots could overwhelm the weather effect. Our 49.49 projection is only 1.01 below 50.5 and already includes a wind deduction. I lean under but require 52.5 at -110; chasing the current number lacks sufficient margin.
Where our number looks wrong. The final-margin model cannot distinguish Purdie’s developing passing matchup from an unsustainably efficient third-down performance. It may understate Liberty’s matchup advantage, but Coastal’s 385-yard performance in a 14-point loss also shows why final scores can underrate its offense. I cannot defend replacing Liberty -1.3 with a precise new fair spread. The totals documentation also contradicts itself: the supplied calculation explicitly subtracts 2.951 points for wind despite saying the model sees no weather.
- Published analysis placed Coastal's pass defense 109th in EPA per pass.
- Displayed Liberty spread shares were 58% of bets and 63% of money; these do not establish sharp-money causation.
- Preseason injuries reduced Liberty's offensive-line depth, with Anthony and Anderson specifically discussed; this is historical context rather than current designation evidence.
- The 7 to 8 p.m. forecast brackets kickoff at 67 to 70°F, north winds 13 to 14 mph, gusts 25 mph and precipitation probabilities declining from 28% to 19%.
- Bailey completed 49-of-88 passes for 826 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions through three games.
- Both quarterbacks ranked top three nationally in average depth of target, supporting both an explosive-play countercase and sensitivity to wind.
- Published plays per game were 65.0 for Liberty and 64.7 for Coastal.
- Liberty beat Ball State 51-15 with 460 yards; Chadwell focused on a short week
- Coastal Carolina lost 22-14 at Delaware, scoreless over the final 38 minutes
- Coastal QB Bailey 8 TD 0 INT, 55.7% completions, 10 sacks; Liberty QB Purdie 5-0 TD/INT, 36 of 64
On the spread. If Purdie hits deep shots early, Coastal's offense has not shown it can keep pace.
On the total. Both offenses throw deep and Coastal's defense is 109th in EPA per pass; if the wind settles to 8-10 mph by kickoff as the evening forecast suggests, the market may have over-adjusted, and Coastal has cleared the number in 8 of 10.

Spread. The best explanation is last week's results: Liberty scored on six of its first seven drives and rolled up 460 yards against Ball State, while Coastal was shut out for the final 38 minutes of a 22-14 loss at Delaware. Covers also has Coastal's defense 109th in EPA per pass against a Liberty quarterback, Deshawn Purdie, who leads the nation in average depth of target. Our number is Liberty -1.3, only 1.4 points from the market and inside a model with no proven ATS edge, so it adds little. I found no availability news that moves this either way; the Covers RB and TE rows were listed for the Ball State game and I could not confirm them for Thursday. My only lean is Coastal at the key number: +3 on a Thursday home night with a first-year staff that has played West Virginia to a one-score game. At +2.5 I have no edge, and even at +3 I would not put a unit on it. Pass.
Total. The market has done the work here. DraftKings opened 54.5 and FanDuel 53.5; every book is now 50 to 50.5. The National Weather Service forecast issued 9/23 has north wind 14 to 16 mph with gusts to 29 on Thursday, easing to 8 to 14 mph with gusts to 25 Thursday night, plus a slight chance of storms before 8pm. Both quarterbacks rank near the top of FBS in average depth of target, so a gusty crosswind hurts exactly what both offenses want to do, and VSIN makes the same case for the under. Against that, Coastal's pass defense is poor, Liberty just scored 51, and Coastal has gone over in 8 of its last 10. Our totals model at 49.5 already includes a 3-point wind penalty, so it barely disagrees. I lean under at 50.5 but the four-point drop has priced most of the weather. Pass.
Where our number looks wrong. The in-season rating still leans on preseason priors (Coastal returning production 15.4%, a first-year head coach) and only sees three final margins. It cannot see that Liberty's Gardner-Webb scare and its Ball State rout came with the same quarterback, nor Coastal's second-half offensive collapse at Delaware.
- Line Liberty -2.5 (-112), moneyline Liberty -142
- Thursday night: north wind 8-14 mph, gusts to 25 mph, slight chance of showers before 9pm
- Writer picks under 52, citing wind gusts around 25 mph
- Writer picks over 51.5; Coastal 109th EPA per pass allowed
- Coastal Carolina enters 2026 under first-year HC Ryan Beard with a new QB (Deuce Bailey) and only 15.4% returning production
- Liberty RB C. Wood and TE B. Burklow are out (undisclosed) and RB J. Marshall is questionable (leg) per the team's injury report
- FanDuel currently prices Liberty -2.5 (-104) / Coastal Carolina +2.5, moneyline Liberty -140
On the spread. If Coastal's rebuild is further along than the box score shows (the 45-7 win over Fordham was comprehensive) or Bailey's clean 8/0 TD:INT ratio reflects real efficiency rather than a small sample, Coastal keeps this within a field goal at home. Both teams are also on a short week off Saturday, 9/19 games, which could offset any fatigue edge.
On the total. If the storm passes north of Conway or arrives after the 7:30pm kickoff, both offenses could play in the milder conditions our own dossier forecast shows, and Liberty's downfield weapon (Makai Jackson, 3 TD in 3 games) plus Coastal's clean 8/0 TD:INT QB could push this over even at 50.5.

Spread. The residual value sits in roster context the box score doesn't fully explain: Coastal Carolina is in year one under Ryan Beard with only 15.4% returning production and a new QB (Deuce Bailey, a Missouri State transfer completing 55.7% with a run game averaging 3.6 ypc), while Liberty returns 38.3% of production and shows a positive portal net (+6) under a stable staff. Liberty's résumé (blowout of Ball State, one-score win over Gardner-Webb, one-score road loss at James Madison) reads stronger than Coastal's (blowout of FCS Fordham, losses to West Virginia and at Delaware). I'd still take Liberty giving a field goal; the number is only modestly inefficient, so this is a standard-stake lean rather than a max-conviction play.
Total.VSiN's preview attributes the drop to a Thursday-night weather system (rain, roughly 25mph gusts) hitting Coastal Carolina's pass-first offense (55.7% completion, Bailey as the only real weapon) harder than Liberty's run-heavy scheme under Jamey Chadwell. Our own captured forecast is milder (68F, 15mph wind, 27% precip) and a generic weather search returned a sunny reading, so the storm isn't fully confirmed, but the total move itself is corroborated across all five books and Coastal's offense (3.6 ypc rush) hasn't shown it can sustain scoring without the pass working cleanly.
- VSiN's week 4 preview ties this total's drop to a rain/wind system forecast for Thursday night in Conway and recommends the under
- FanDuel currently prices the total at 50.5 (over -110 / under -110)
The call, written up
Liberty at Coastal Carolina, Liberty -2.5. No pick. Two of three panels passed on this spread, leaving only one analyst willing to take a side, short of what a release requires. The market moved from Coastal -1.5 at open on 9/20 to Liberty -2.5 to -3 across five books by 9/23, a shift the panels tie to last week's results: Liberty routed Ball State 51-15 while Coastal lost 22-14 at Delaware, shut out over the final 38 minutes. Coastal also opens the year under a new staff with 15.4% returning production and a transfer quarterback, against a Liberty team that returns 38.3% of production. The counter-case: Coastal outgained Delaware for 385 yards in that loss, and its quarterback carries a clean 8 touchdown, 0 interception mark, a case for the home team at the field goal. No pick on the spread.
Under 50.5. The total fell from an opening range of 52 to 54.5 to a consensus of 50 to 50.5 across five books by 9/23, a move panels tie to Thursday-night wind forecasts near the coast, with gusts cited around 25 mph working against two quarterbacks who both attack deep. The counter-case: Coastal's quarterback carries a clean 8 touchdown, 0 interception mark and Liberty just scored 51. Two panels take the under at 50.5, betmgm, -110.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. Model context
The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
Trends and splits
Descriptive context, every line with the games it counts. Filters like these did not hold up as predictors in our testing, so none of this feeds a call and none of it is a reason a pick wins. Situational splits look back 3 seasons and need at least 8 decided games to be shown at all.
