Marshall at James Madison. Lean: Marshall +19. Lean: Under 56.5.
The call
The panelists
- JMU's Sep. 29 preview reports the 46-20 win at Old Dominion and identifies Coleman as the quarterback who led the offense.
- JMU named Coleman Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week after his 24-for-42, 243-yard, four-touchdown performance at Old Dominion.
- Covers lists Norton, Collins and Evans as questionable, and shows Del Rio-Wilson's recent passing log.
On the spread. JMU's pass rush recorded nine sacks and held Old Dominion to minus-14 rushing yards on Sep. 26. If Marshall's protection again fails against that front, the market move will prove incomplete rather than excessive.
On the total. JMU allowed only 13 points to Liberty and San Diego State before allowing 20 at Old Dominion. A repeat of its front's nine-sack, minus-14-rushing-yard Old Dominion performance could leave Marshall short of the scoring needed for an over.

Spread.JMU is 4-0, just produced a 46-20 road win at Old Dominion, and Marshall needed one-score wins over Middle Tennessee, Missouri State and Gardner-Webb after being shut out at Penn State. The number has already incorporated that separation, plus JMU's healthy production from Camden Coleman while JC Evans has been listed questionable. At Marshall +19, the lean is to buy back the late move. Coleman remains a real concern, but Marshall has veteran Carlos Del Rio-Wilson and the current price asks JMU to extend a five-point move from the sharper market region. Our -18.9 number is essentially the consensus, so it supplies no independent case.
Total.Market-first, the rise from 54.5 to the captured 56 or 56.5 reflects JMU's scoring output and Marshall's defensive concessions, particularly 35 points to Gardner-Webb. The kickoff forecast is cool and mostly cloudy with light conditions, not a wind-based under setup. The totals model is only 1.4 points above consensus, well inside its stated error, so it is not the reason for the position. The under case is JMU's disruptive defense, which dominated Old Dominion's ground game and could suppress Marshall's contribution.
Where our number looks wrong. The model's -18.9 is not a usable disagreement with the market and may overreact to JMU's 87-3 Wagner result while treating Marshall's 45-0 Penn State loss as broadly representative. Its final-margin inputs also do not resolve the current availability listings.
- Action Network displayed 53% of tickets on Marshall and 47% of money on JMU when consulted.
- JMU's official release lists Coleman's season production and his Sep. 26 four-touchdown performance.
- JMU's Sep. 29 preview says its defense recorded nine sacks and held Old Dominion to minus-14 rushing yards.
- Marshall's official schedule records the 36-35 Gardner-Webb result on Sep. 26.
- Covers lists the current unverified injury designations for both teams.
- JMU won 46-20 at Old Dominion with nine sacks, minus 14 rushing yards allowed and points on all nine red zone trips; Coleman 24 of 42 for 243 yards and four touchdowns.
- Marshall beat Gardner-Webb 36-35 on a field goal with six seconds left; Gibson said the defense is an embarrassment and allowed too many explosive plays.
- Gardner-Webb gained 458 yards (298 passing, 160 rushing) at Marshall; Marshall gained 569 and lost two fumbles.
On the spread. Marshall can score late. Del Rio-Wilson is a preseason conference player of the year pick who just produced 569 yards of offense, and 18.5 points leaves room for a back-door touchdown against second-string defenders. JMU kicked four field goals at Old Dominion and Coleman completed 24 of 42, so the Dukes are not finishing drives cleanly, and showers in the forecast could shorten the game and make a large margin harder to build. JMU beat Liberty by 7 and San Diego State by 13, neither of which clears this number. If Evans returns rusty or Coleman is limited, the favorite gets worse. The market has also already moved toward JMU at every book that opened lower, so the cheap number is gone.
On the total. Marshall's defense is the worst unit on the field and its coach says the problem is schematic, which does not get fixed in a week. If JMU scores in the 40s again, Marshall needs only two touchdowns to push this over, and Del Rio-Wilson has produced yardage in bunches. The rain amounts in the forecast are light and the wind is under 10 mph, so weather may not matter at all. The market moved up, not down, through the week, and our own model sits a point above the number. Short fields from Marshall fumbles or JMU sacks would add points quickly.

Spread.Market first: James Madison is 4-0 with a defense allowing 12.3 points a game, fresh off nine sacks and a 46-20 win at Old Dominion, while Marshall needed a field goal with six seconds left to beat a 1-4 FCS Gardner-Webb team that threw four touchdown passes on it. That explains a number in the high teens, and our rating agrees: our number is JMU -18.9 against a market of -18.5, so there is no model gap to lean on. What the news adds points the same way as the market. Tony Gibson called his defense an embarrassment on 9/26 and said on 10/1 that receivers running wide open is a scheme problem, and he rated the JMU front the best Marshall has seen outside Penn State, the game where the Herd scored zero. Camden Coleman has been steady in place of JC Evans, so the quarterback question does not move me. I would lay -18.5 as a lean only, and I would not lay -19.
Total. The over case is real: Marshall has allowed 35 to an FCS team and gives up long pass plays, and JMU averages 44.8 points. The under case is that JMU's scoring average is inflated by 87 against Wagner, its FBS games have landed on 33, 39 and 66, and its defense has held three FBS opponents to 13, 13 and 20. Marshall's only game against a comparable front produced zero points. The National Weather Service now calls for showers Saturday, wetter than the forecast we captured.
Where our number looks wrong. Our number of JMU -18.9 sits on the market, so there is no disagreement to exploit, but the inputs are shaky. The in-season rating learns from final margins, so the 87-3 win over FCS Wagner is doing a lot of work in the JMU rating, while the two earlier FBS wins were by 7 and 13. It does not know JMU is playing its second quarterback, and it does not see that Marshall's results against FBS and FCS opponents at home have been one-score escapes with a defense its own coach is criticising. The flat 2.5 home field and the calibration stretch on large margins also make this favorite read a little bigger than the raw 16.2.
- Gibson called the JMU front the best Marshall has seen outside Penn State and called wide-open receivers a scheme problem; Evans is day to day and Coleman is the current JMU starter.
- Camden Coleman named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week after the Old Dominion game.
- National Weather Service forecast for Harrisonburg on Saturday: showers, cloudy, high near 64, northeast wind 5 to 8 mph, a tenth to a quarter inch of rain possible.
- JMU scored on all nine red zone trips at Old Dominion but kicked four field goals; the defense had nine sacks and allowed 20 points.
- Gardner-Webb scored 35 at Marshall with four touchdown passes; Gibson cited too many explosive plays allowed.
- BetMGM preview on 9/30 listed the total at 54.5, below the 56.5 captured on 10/1, consistent with an upward move during the week.
- JMU favored by 18.5 in a 4-0 start, Evans questionable, Coleman the main quarterback
- JMU 4-0 against the spread and Marshall's wins came against weak opponents
- Game preview, Family Weekend sellout, ESPNU 3:45pm ET
On the spread. JMU has covered every game by a wide margin, Marshall has a bad defense and a shutout loss to a top team, and Marshall's wins were close ones over weak opponents. If Evans is out and Coleman keeps playing well, JMU wins by 25 or more with no problem. The late move toward JMU could also be sharp action.
On the total. JMU averages 44.8 and scored 87 against Wagner, 46 at Old Dominion. Marshall's defense allows 32.5 a game and its games have been shootouts. If JMU scores in the mid 40s, the over comes through by itself.

Spread. The market number of James Madison minus 18.5 is well explained before any rating: the Dukes are 4-0 and 4-0 against the spread, scoring 44.8 and allowing 12.3 a game, with a top defense by success rate, against a Marshall team whose three wins came against Middle Tennessee, Missouri State and 1-4 FCS Gardner-Webb, two of them by a single score or less, and who were shut out 0 to 45 at Penn State. The line has climbed from 14 at some books to 18.5 and 19, so the public case is already priced and then some. The new evidence is thin. JMU quarterback J.C. Evans (wrist) is questionable, with Camden Coleman playing well in his place, so the quarterback change is not a clear downgrade. Marshall brings nearly all of its production back and gives up 32.5 a game, which makes a cover by JMU live.
Total. The total sits at 55.5 to 56.5 after opening at 54.5 to 56.5. The case for the over is that JMU scores 44.8 a game and Marshall allows 32.5, and Marshall plays high-scoring games, such as 36 to 35 and 28 to 26. The case for the under is that in a blowout, JMU runs the ball and bleeds clock, its defense is among the best at limiting explosive plays, and Marshall was held to zero by a strong opponent. Weather is mild with little wind, so it adds nothing. A big favorite scoring about 40 needs Marshall to reach only 16 for this to go over, which is plausible.
- Posted total 55.5 and JMU 18.5 point favorite
- JMU defense among the best nationally by success rate, Marshall wins over weak opposition

Marshall at James Madison, James Madison -18.5. The news explains much of it: James Madison is 4-0 and won 46-20 at Old Dominion on Sep. 26 with nine sacks, while Marshall beat Gardner-Webb 36-35 on a field goal with six seconds left and was shut out 45-0 at Penn State in week 1. JC Evans is questionable, but Camden Coleman was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week on Sep. 28.
Under 56.5. The National Weather Service on Oct. 1 calls for showers Saturday, high near 64, wind 5 to 8 mph, wetter than our captured forecast. James Madison held three FBS opponents to 13, 13 and 20. The counter-case: Marshall allowed 35 to Gardner-Webb, and if James Madison scores in the 40s again the over comes through on its own. Take Under 56.5 at -112 at BetMGM.
How to read this page
The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own. A Pick is our strongest call and goes on the record. A Lean is which way we lean on a game and is not a pick. The meter shows how strongly the panel backs the call. It is not a probability or a hit rate.

The numbers the panel argued from. Our models price a game, the panel makes the call, and the calls above are the call. Nothing in this block is a call.
The totals number is a registered candidate that loses to the closing total: across 2,264 held out games it missed the combined score by 12.862 points on average and the closing total missed by 12.635, ahead of us in all 3 of those seasons, so it never posts to the board and never enters the record on its own.
