Keys to the game
  • FIU’s official October 6 preview lists its 10 days off, Jones versus FIU’s run defense, FIU’s conference-leading total offense, and its three sacks allowed.
  • New Mexico State’s official October 5 preview documents Damante’s first 2026 start, Jones’s 155 rushing yards, six sacks against WKU, and FIU QB Kohl’s six interceptions.
  • FIU’s September 26 recap documents Kohl playing only the first half and Marker’s 92 passing yards in relief.
What beats it

On the spread. If Kohl starts without limitation and FIU’s elite run defense contains Jones, New Mexico State’s Damante-led passing game may not produce enough offense to keep this inside one score.

On the total. FIU ranks near the top of CUSA in passing and total offense, and either defensive scores, short fields or a healthy Kohl attacking New Mexico State’s eighth-ranked CUSA pass defense can defeat an under despite the run matchup.

Read Ace's full case

Spread.Market-first, FIU’s move from -3.5 to -6.5 is best explained by the Panthers’ extra rest, home field, excellent early defensive production and New Mexico State’s compressed road week after Thursday’s win over Western Kentucky. That is a coherent case and has already consumed the opener. At +6.5, New Mexico State is the lean because its offense has an established rushing centerpiece in James Jones, FIU quarterback JJ Kohl’s status remains unverified after leaving the LIU game, and the Aggies’ defensive pressure can matter if FIU uses a limited Kohl or backup Zach Marker. FIU’s official preview also gives the Panthers major statistical advantages, so this is not a bet. Our -2.9 number supports the dog only marginally and lacks ATS validation. The model may be too low on FIU’s defense and rest edge, while it also does not know Kohl’s availability.

Total.Market-first, the total’s move from 47.5 to 46.5 reflects FIU’s defense, New Mexico State’s short week and rain in the Miami forecast. Most books now offer 46.5, so the under case is largely priced. FanDuel’s captured 47.5 is still playable as a lean. FIU has allowed no opponent more than 20 points, and this game pairs FIU’s CUSA-leading rush defense with Jones and an Aggies offense now led by Damante, who made his first start last week. Forecasts agree on rain risk but disagree on the wind magnitude, making weather a modest under input rather than a foundation.

Where our number looks wrong. The -2.9 FIU number likely understates FIU’s early defensive and home-rest advantages, while the model cannot account for Kohl’s knee status or New Mexico State’s quarterback change to Adam Damante.

Keys to the game
  • Spread FIU -6 (opened -3.5), total 46.5 (opened 47.5); margin model FIU by 7.8, NMSU 1-7 on the road vs FBS since 2025, no bet recommended
  • NMSU beat Western Kentucky 34-13 on Oct 1 in its CUSA opener; FIU game Wed Oct 7 on ESPN2
  • FIU beat LIU 20-3 on Sep 26, JJ Kohl threw a 48 yard TD, FIU 2-2
What beats it

On the spread. FIU's offense has scored 18 points per game and only 9 and 10 in its two FBS road losses, so a one score game is very plausible and 6.5 against a low scoring favorite is a lot of points. New Mexico State scored 27.8 per game and looked sharp in all three phases against WKU, and a rainy game shortens the clock, which helps the dog.

On the total. Every New Mexico State game has reached at least 47, the Aggies have given up 29 or more to three of four FBS opponents, and FIU's offense can break plays like the 48 yard TD against LIU. A couple of short fields in wet conditions could push this over quickly.

Spread. The strongest explanation is schedule and profile. FIU last played Sep 26 and comes in on 11 days of rest for its CUSA opener at home, while New Mexico State played Thursday Oct 1 and now travels across two time zones on a Wednesday short week. New Mexico State is 1-7 on the road against FBS teams since 2025, losing those by double digits on average, and its two 2026 wins came at home against Mercyhurst and Western Kentucky. FIU's defense has allowed 14.5 points per game. Our number of FIU by 2.9 is well short of the market, but the model ignores rest, travel and depth and leans on a soft New Mexico State rating bump from the WKU blowout. An outside margin model I found projects FIU by 7.8. I side with FIU but the move already ate the value from 3.5, so this is a lean at 6.5, not a bet.

Total. The total has drifted down, 50.5 to 47.5 at FanDuel and 47.5 to 46.5 at DraftKings and BetMGM, and our model sits at 45.65. FIU's four games produced 28, 53, 26 and 23 total points; its offense averages 18 and its defense allows 14.5. The captured forecast calls for rain at kickoff in Miami. The over case is real: New Mexico State's games have all gone 47 or higher, its offense put 34 on WKU, and its defense allowed 34 and 42 to FBS teams. On balance FIU's style and the rain point under, but the line has already come down, so this is a lean at 46.5, not a bet.

Where our number looks wrong. Our number makes FIU only a 2.9 point favorite largely because New Mexico State's in-season rating jumped from a preseason -12.7 to -7.7 after a home blowout of WKU. The model does not see that NMSU's wins are home games against an FCS side and WKU, that it is on a six day turnaround with cross-country travel, or that FIU is coming off an extra week of rest. The market move of three points toward FIU is consistent with those factors.

  • Search of game previews found no posted official line or injury news beyond our captured data; a third party model leaned FIU by about 7.8
  • Game is Wednesday October 7 at 7:30 PM ET at Pitbull Stadium
What beats it

On the spread. FIU defense has been strong, New Mexico State has lost by 12 or more to every FBS opponent seen so far (Florida State, Hawai'i, New Mexico), and the market move may reflect sharp money or a lineup fact I could not verify. If Burton and Lotten sit, the Aggie offense is thinner.

On the total. New Mexico State games have produced 68 and 51 total points, the market drop may already be full, and the rain may be light by kickoff.

Read Buck's full case

Spread. The simple explanation is a home team in a divisional conference game against a road side that has struggled away from home, plus FIU's defense (14.5 points allowed per game) and New Mexico State's thin returning production. Against that, FIU scores only 18 points per game, lost 10-16 at Florida Atlantic and 9-19 at South Florida, and has not shown it can lay a touchdown by itself. New Mexico State just beat Western Kentucky 34-13 and scores 27.8 per game, so a one-score game is plausible. Rain is forecast, which compresses scoring and favors the points. This is a lean on the dog at 6.5, not a bet: I found no incremental news I could verify, and two skill players are questionable for the Aggies, so a generic dog narrative is not enough for a bet.

Total. The market sits at 46.5 at most books, 47.5 at FanDuel, down from 47.5 to 50.5 at open, so it has already shaded down. FIU scores 18 points per game and its games have totalled 28, 53, 26 and 23. New Mexico State's games run higher, with totals of 51 and 68 in two of its wins or losses, but those came against weaker or softer defenses. Rain is forecast at kickoff, and a Wednesday night short week with two Aggie skill players questionable argues for fewer possessions and a lower scoring game. The over case is New Mexico State's pace and the Aggies offense scoring 34 last week. I lean under 46.5 as a lean only.

The call, written up

On the spread

New Mexico State at Florida International, FIU -6.5. The line moved from 3.5 to 6.5 at BetMGM and DraftKings, which the panels tie to FIU's extra rest after a September 26 win over LIU and New Mexico State's short week after beating Western Kentucky 34-13 on October 1; the case for the points is an FIU offense scoring 18 per game that lost 16-10 at Florida Atlantic and 19-9 at South Florida, James Jones leading CUSA at 102.0 rushing yards per game, and JJ Kohl's status unverified after he played only the first half against LIU.

On the total

Under 47.5. The counter is that every New Mexico State game has reached at least 47 points and FIU ranks second in CUSA passing offense, so the selected number is under 47.5 at -114 at FanDuel.

The calls come first on this page: the spread and the total, each a Pick or a Lean, then Ace, Stack and Buck one by one. The market's number, our number and the gap between them sit further down as MODEL CONTEXT: that is the input our analyst panel argued from, not a call of its own.
